Kayt nearly melted with his grin, but she just smirked in response. She could see it in his face, his need to touch her. He always had the same look. And she had the need to be touched by him, but not just yet. Not yet, no. She couldn’t do it yet. “Well- I’m glad you’re not dead, for sure.” She nodded, pushing her dirty hair out of her face as she took in the new car, “Good truck, though, good ‘new Florence’,” she agreed.
His finally touching her head her heart stopped just as much as the anger in her throat. She was so frustrated, so angry. So badly wanted to kick herself for not having been there. He’d been through a car accident, Mammy died, everything happened when she was gone. She’d lost some possessions in a flood, and kicked back up her alcohol … habit, dealt with quite a bit of fuckery, but fuck- she hadn’t dealt with any of that. “Stop.. stop… stop, Matt. I’m fine,” her stops had gone from almost inaudible to a normal level of vocalness. “I’m fine, it’s nothing,” her knuckles were bloody and already bruising. She was sure she cracked one, but it wasn’t a big deal. She didn’t care about that. “I’m sorry, Matt, I’m sorry I wasn’t here. I’m sorry I disappeared. Fuck. I did it to protect you, and regardless of if you want to take me seriously or not, it was a necessity, but in doing so I left you alone to .. deal with all of that?” She leaned back against Florence 2.0, allowing him to continue looking over her hand, because she was sure it made him feel better, “Just, fuck me, man.”
Matt smiled at her light joke and nodded. “I’m glad I’m not dead, too. I’d have to miss....all this..” he teasingly waved at her covered in grease. He followed it with a gentle laugh as he patted Florence. “Yeah, she’s a good truck so far. I think I’ll keep her.” He shrugged lightly, continuing to gaze at her with so much love. It filled him, even to this day.
As Kayt continued to nearly freak out, Matt felt desperate to fix it somehow. What had he said? What had happened? They were doing fine and all he was doing was updating her? He hadn’t meant to upset her like this. He didn’t want to be the one that got her into a fit like this. “You’re hurt, that’s not fine,” Matt said gently back, trying to reach for her hand again to inspect it. He didn’t want her in pain. Though she was always terrible with that. She never let him know if she was in pain. As she further explained, the frown formed on his face and he chewed the inside of his cheek. “It’s...it’s okay, Kayt. It’s alright. Things happen. You made your decisions based on what you thought was best at the time. All this...brought me close to my brother and I...I was forced to move on. Sometimes that’s needed. It...things happens, Kayt. You can’t control them. It’s okay. I don’t blame you for not being here, I’m not your job...and...as much as I find it hard to take that advice..you’re not mine either. If we can be together when things are tough then it’s good. If not...we manage until we can be again.” He gulped, watching her fall back on Florence and reached out to touch her hair. He gave a light smirk as he murmured, “I’d be happy to but I don’t think it fits the mood, sweetheart.”
