Lu crossed their arms and glared at the guy standing before them. “Fuck you. You don’t know if I have ‘more’ or not.” Fuck him for making such a blatant accusation. They didn’t know Lu’s past. Any less than they knew his. He was an inconsiderate asshole. Lu raised an eyebrow and shrugged. “I would have stopped kicking it until it gave me what I wanted. It’s a stupid fucking machine.” Gasping, Lu held up a finger. “Wait! I got it!” They dropped their conversation for a moment while they tricked the machine to turn, letting out a few globes. Bat included. “Ah ha! Fuck. Knew there was a way.” They smirked at the guy and shrugged. “Because I’m curious.” 

Rafe snorted lightly, “Considering you try to bash everyone you meet over the head with your attitude kind of shows me any “more” you have is the “more” i don’t need in my life.” He shrugged lightly, it was a dick thing to say but he had enough of his own baggage to deal with he really didn’t need to add anyone else’s to it. “It’s a machine, man. I don’t think it really “cares” about what you want.” He rolled his shoulders lightly, reaching up to rub at the spot where his shoulder and neck met to ease some tension that was there. He raised an eyebrow as he watched them trick the machine into getting what they wanted. “Still don’t see how that makes it your business.”

Matt nodded his head and smiled. “Working for yourself is great! You learn the ins and outs of what it takes the operate a job. It’s a great opportunity to have. I’ve done a few side jobs and it’s opened my eyes. I’m proud of you.” He shrugged. Not that Rafe needed him to be proud but Matt still felt it was necessary for someone younger than him to hear. Having people proud of you was a driving force to continue to succeed. “Delivery girl? Who do you mean?” Matt asked lightly, smiling at Rafe as he waited for more clarification. 

Rafe chuckled and and nodded back, “One of the reasons i like doing it.” He shifted uncomfortably at the other man’s declaration of pride. He honestly couldn’t remember anyone ever telling him they were proud of him. He fidgeted with his coffee cup and looked up when the bell over the door rang, his lips twitching when he saw the tiny dark haired girl who entered. “Her.” He nodded a the girl before glancing at Matt for a moment before his eyes were drawn back to the girl. “She came by the Yard, said she was picking up shit for the shop.”

Lu glared at the boy in front of them, looking up and scoffing. “No, I bet you like the quiet tame ones that can’t stick up for themselves when you’re concerned.” They rolled their eyes and sighed heavily. It didn’t matter. None of it mattered. The boy in front of them clearly didn’t like them. The feeling was mutual. Lu didn’t hit it off with many people. And when were they anyone’s type? No one liked them and Lu was growing comfortable with that. After all, it’s what they had to force themselves into. They built up walls no one could break and it was discouraging. Lu knew they did it to themselves. “I wasn’t fucking breaking private property. I was kicking it. There’s a difference.” Lu took a deep breath and glared even more harshly as they baited money for the ring. “Depends, who’re you giving it to? Yourself or someone else?” They smirked, crossing their arms.

He sneered at the unintentional slight to Idalia and gave them a dark look. “Actually I prefer someone who is more than they seem and has a core of steel that only select people can see.” He rolled his eyes back at them and wished he hadn’t even started this stupid conversation in the first place. He didn’t like talking to people for a reason and avoided them and rarely left the Yard for a reason. People irritated him or tried to use him and then left him. “Uh huh and would you have stopped kicking it before or after it broke?” He smirked playfully and raised an eyebrow back, before tilting his head. “That’s your business how, exactly?”

“Well, if you’re not eating sweets..what do you eat? Don’t tell me you’re a health nut like my brother. Are you more into salty things then?” He hoped to god that he wasn’t another one to cram healthy habits down his throat. Poor Matt was trying to convert him and Kayt and honestly, was he going to get anywhere? Probably not. “I’m surprised, though. It’s not often you run into someone who doesn’t want to have a sweet. It happens, I know, but not often.” He shrugged. Who was the boy looking for? Had to be someone important seeing as he was fidgeting for them. 

“God no. I eat healthy stuff some times but not always, I just don’t like sweets.” He thought it over for a moment before shrugging lightly. “Yeah, I do like some salty things.” He chuckled lightly and nodded, “Trust me when people find out they often tell me how weird I am for it.” Suddenly a swirl of dark hair caught his eyes and a faint smile came to his lips as he watched Idalia practically twirl out of the kitchen and into the dining area. He waited for her to notice him and bit back a grin when she did. Her face grew red and she glanced around before making her way over him. “Um, d-do you g-guys need an-anything e-else?” She was ducking her head to hide behind her hair. He thought about making a joke but decided not to since there was someone they didn’t know sitting there. Instead he just contented himself with watching her doodle on the edge of her notepad as she waited on them.

I would think ‘the worst’ would be like, I don’t know, not celebrating christmas or something.” Noelle shrugged, definitely not noticing his shock at her sitting by him. “Well then maybe you’re just prone to cavities, I don’t know,” she giggled, shrugging as she ate the cherry off the top of her sundae, before popping the stem into her mouth to tie a not out of it, a trick she loved doing. “I’m still wondering how I’ve never gotten a cavity, honestly, then,” she continued on, smile on her lips.

“Nope, cavities are worst than not celebrating Christmas.” He set his chin in his hand and raised his eyebrow once more with a faint smile. “Dunno about that. Had them a lot as a kid but I didn’t exactly take care of my teeth back then.” He couldn’t help but chuckle at the sound of her giggle and shook his head. “I’m now wondering the same thing.”

Kayt left her unamused look on her face, simply intensifying it with a brow raise. Rafe irritated the ever-loving fuck out of her on a day-to-day basis. She often wished someone else owned the Junkyard, or that there was another one near by. Kayt considered retorting with something to the effect of, ‘it surprises me you have enough brain to memorize anything’, but decided to keep it to herself, and instead leave him with a mock-impressed, “Huh, right.” After all, he was the closest junkyard… and owned the closest junkyard. She grinned at her own thought before returning to her annoyed look, “You could very easily take that up with him, you know. I’m not a fucking messenger raven. if you put yourself in the place to become a messenger boy, you deal with it. Because this,” she  leaned forward to grab her beer and pointed towards him with the mouth of the bottle, then back at herself a few times, “is so not in my job description.”

He rolled his eyes a bit and shook his head with a faint smirk, he didn’t know what it was about him and Kayt that made it to where they got on each other’s nerves but they rarely, if ever, had a civil conversation. He raised an eyebrow when she grinned, knowing it was probably at a thought at his expense but whatever, he wouldn’t pry. He didn’t actually care that much what she thought of him. “I would if he were ever fucking around to find.” He scowled, it surprised him how hard it was to find the old mechanic, he hadn’t thought the man could get around that damn quickly. “Delivering shit to ornery mechanics isn’t in my damn job description either. He reache dover to snag a piece of paper off the desk and scribbled a quick Find a new damn deliverer because that’s not my job, asshole -R onto it before dropping it onto the bag of parts he brought. “What is your job description other than being ornery and oily?”

“Oh… well, I’ve never had a cavity… so, I can’t really relate.” Noelle shrugged gently, smile still on her face. She picked up her sundae and slipped around the counter to sit across from the man. “Sundae’s like this are a usual for me, and nope-not a single cavity. Are you sure you take care of your teeth properly?”

“They are actually the worst.” He informed her as he finished off his ice cream cone. He raised an eyebrow when she moved to sit across from him, he wasn’t used to people being so quick to associate with him. He scowled a bit at her question and snorted faintly. “I take care of my teeth just fine, thank you. Brushing flossing and not eating crap that’s not good for me.” He smirked faintly with a soft chuckle.

“What? How can you not like sweets?? What kind of human being are you?” Eli joked at the younger man nearby and reached out a fork playfully. “What you don’t eat, I will.” Matt would’ve smacked his hand for saying such a thing but the good thing was, he wasn’t around. “I’ll go ahead and do so.” He ordered a cookies and cream milkshake, smiling at the waitress before looking over at the man again. “So I’m guessing you come here often? But…not for the sweets?”  

Rafe laughed lightly and shook his head, “Dunno, man, never got the taste for most sweets. I’ll eat them on occasion, but they’re not really for me.” He raised an eyebrow at the fork that was being reached towards his food. “Dude, food code, don’t break it.” He smirked lightly, wobbling his own fork in front of his food to defend it. He peeked around once more to see if Idalia was working before he started digging into his food. “Fairly frequently, more often now then before but no ... not really for the sweets.” He chuckled softly.

Lu scrunched their nose in disgust and stepped back from the guy in front of him. “Uh what the fuck. Learn how to take a hint. I wanted you to back off, not fuck me against a prize machine. Besides, don’t flatter yourself. I’d never bend over for a type like you,” Lu snapped at the blonde. Who did he think he was? He was a pig. Lu didn’t like him. “Yeah well you don’t need to fucking talk to me, how about that.” They didn’t like him already. They hoped they wouldn’t be seeing more of him. They could already tell that they wouldn’t get along. “And I find that perfectly quaffed hair equally amusing,” Lu scrunched their nose at him before rolling their eyes. He wanted their ring now? “Uh, yeah, I mind,” they played.   

Rafe rolled his eyes dramatically and let out a quiet huff. “Relax, it was a goddamn joke. You’re not my type anyway. Too fuckin’ obnoxious and rude.” He once more found himself thinking of Idalia and wondering if the tiny brunette was going to swing by the junkyard any time soon for stuff for Matt, Kayt and Jared. He forced himself to pay attention to the conversation again. “Well, excuse the fuck out of me, next time I’ll just ignore you as you try to break private property.” He gestured to the store the gumball machine was in front of. He snorted lightly and ran a hand through his hair, messing it up with an eyeroll. He raised an eyebrow, “You really want this purple cross when you’ve been bitching about a black rat ring since I got here?” He contemplated how much he wanted this stupid plastic ring. “I’ll give you two more bucks to waste if you give me this stupid ring?” He couldn’t believe he just said that, his hand tightened around the gumball prize in his hand and he almost threw it down and said fuck it.

Matt heard a voice as he scooped his book up. He looked around and caught sight of Rafe. Smiling, he waved lightly. “Good afternoon Rafe,” he greeted, “it is weird to be away from the shop, actually. But days off are good for the soul. And mind.” He shrugged and waved a hand. He felt like such an old man compared to Rafe. Then again, he had aged to an old man by 16. “I wasn’t annoyed out of anywhere. I simply do my own thing. I have patience of steel,” he admitted. It wasn’t a lie. “You think if I didn’t I’d still be here?” 

Matt’s politer greeting itched at Rafe, he always felt like an even bigger asshole whenever he was around the other man. He slouched in his seat as he sipped at his coffee, he was ridiculously tired today. “That’s what I’ve heard. I suppose, working for myself allows me to take days off whenever I want.” He smirked faintly. He snorted lightly and nodded. “Yeah, I’ve noticed all that patience.” Rafe himself wasn’t very patient and he knew it, it was one of the few things he admired about Matt. Finally he decided to just go for it and ask about the tiny brunette who’d taken up delivering for Jared’s Garage. “So, did Kayt and Jared do as I said and get a delivery girl or was that a fluke?”

Matt took a deep breath as he leaned back in his chair at the coffee shop. He had a day off and decided to grab a book and get some coffee. These days weren’t hard to come by but with Lu suddenly in his life he did often stay more occupied than he had been recently. It wasn’t a problem and he loved helping the teenager. However, he had gotten used to down time. He wanted to utilize it more often. A balance between work and relaxing was needed for his well being, he realized. And when his thoughts got too jumbled, he decided to get busy again. It worked out for him. Scrubbing a hand over his face, Matt closed the book to take a sip of coffee, but the book slipped and fell onto the ground. “Well, there goes that,” he shook his head. What page had he been on? 

Rafe’s feet dragged as he entered the coffee shop. He needed a caffeine boost if he was going to stay awake for the rest of the day and do what he needed to do. He was just figuring out what he wanted and placing his order when someone dropped their book, he glanced over and snorted when he saw Matt. He paid for his coffee and moved to join the other man, not caring if he was welcome or not (he usually wasn’t) and gave him a small smirk. “Odd seeing you outside of the shop or the ‘Yard. Blondie finally annoy you enough to get out?” His smirk widened a bit, before he wondered if he could get away with asking about the new delivery girl they’d gotten, he’d only met her once and seen her around a couple of times and he was curious.

Lu raised an eyebrow as they slowly turned their head towards the male voice behind them. Oh, today was not the day. “Fuck you, I didn’t ask for your input.” They shook their head and looked back at the machine before digging in their pockets for more change. Worst case they could always go back to Matt’s and rob his change jar. “Well good for you. Since you don’t see the appeal, there’s no need for you to even be here. The fact is it’s a cool fucking ring and I want the black one. Do you have a problem with that?”

Rafe smirked faintly at their reply and raised an eyebrow before giving them an amused look. “Pass. I don’t think you’re my type. And I know you didn’t, I just felt like giving it.” He snorted lightly as he tossed the gumball prize he held back and forth in his hands. It was cute for a stupid plastic kids toy. His mind flashed to a tiny pale brunette with stuttering words and big blue eyes and he wondered if she’d like the plastic ring he held. “It’s a public space, dumbass, I can occupy just as much as you can.” He smirked lightly. “Nope, no problem, just finding your frustration amusing.” He glanced at the ring he held again and looked at them. “Mind if I keep this one .... Since it’s not the one you want anyway?

Noelle grinned as she topped her sundae off with everything sweet she could get her hands on- hot fudge, hot caramel, nuts, sprinkles, chopped up candies of various types- m&ms, snickers, reeces, all of it. “I know, I know. I’m a master at sundae-making. Want me to make yours, too?” she asked, when she felt like someone was looking at her. It was her break time, and she’d headed over to the ice cream shop down the street from the toy shop. 

Rafe didn’t know why he was at the ice cream shop, he didn’t even like sweets that much. But he’d found himself craving ice cream and couldn’t ignore it like he usually did so he made his way there. Now though he was distracted by the redhead making the biggest sundae he’d ever seen. He blinked when she spoke to him and snorted lightly. “No thanks, I’ll pass .... I don’t actually want to rot out all my teeth.”
