One stock market superstition is known as the “Boston Snow Indicator.” Although there is no correlation between snow and the performance of the stock market- it is believed by some that if Boston gets a white Christmas, the stocks with rise in the year to come.
The most famous stock market crash used to back up this superstition, was in 1929. However there is more, such as Black Monday in 1987, the collapse of Lehman Brothers which triggered the global financial crash in 2008, and the Asian currency crisis. All of these happened in October, do you think it’s true, or just a coincidence?
Armen Alchian was the professor of economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1954, he was able to figure out the secret component of a newly developed hydrogen bomb. He did this, just by looking at the share prices of chemical suppliers on the stock market.
He had a huge set of skills, which served well when he was working for RAND in the 1950’s. During the time Armen was employed by RAND, the first test of a Hydrogen Bomb was carried out. In the build up to the test, people in the economics department were understandably very curious about the components in which made the new bomb, however, physicists and engineers couldn’t provide any information due to the sensitivity of the topic. That didn’t stop Armen wondering though, which led to him to try and ‘find out for himself’.
He looked at documents from the Department of Commerce and information about who dealt with the metals that could have been used in the Hydrogen Bomb. After cross-referencing his information, he was left with 6 companies. He watched the stock prices of these companies for 6 months and saw that during the build up to the test, Lithium Corp of America shares jumped by $10, and fell straight after the bomb test.
He wrote about his discovery in RAND and was asked to withdraw it, so he then sat on this story for decades before sharing it.

Spotify Shares
According to BBC business, Spotify has recently filed to list on the New York Stock Exchange.
This could increase this music streaming service’s worth to $23billion. Rather than Spotify issue new shares, the existing shareholders and early investors will take their shares directly to the NYSE.
This gives investors and employees a chance to sell their shares, as this was not intended to raise funds for Spotify.

We posted a while ago regarding Sky being bought by 21st Century Fox. We saw on the BBC this week, that Comcast had made a £22.1bn bid on Sky. Both Comcast and 21st Century fox are US companies, meaning Sky will become a US owned company.
