Note- From my last fic posted in March 2023 to now May 2025, I have developed a chronic illness that low-key was ruining my life and whatnot, so I had to disappear for awhile! But I had surgery last month, and it has made my symptoms MUCH more manageable and I hope to return to the writing world VERY soon <3

Ryland Grace being disorientated after space, both exposure to antigravity after absolutely zero training (bro needed an anti-nausea pill for a jet flight, granted it was a FAST one)

He cracked his head against a panel, bled, probably became severely concussed

His balance is likely off, the little crystals in his ear would be wrecked and off after years in space.

Grace being extra not Graceful once experiencing gravity again. Walking into walls, corners, tripping over his feet far more than usual

Or other issues, intermittent dizziness and migraines, nausea, other brain issues after it being knocked so hard and so severely

Not to mention, the gravity on Erid might be stronger or weaker than earth, so Grace would have to readjust all over again even after he's left the ship.

But humans are incredibly adaptable. After a few years, I'm sure he would learn how to use the gravity force to his advantage!

Stronger gravity would let him rebuild muscle, possibly giving him enough strength to rival eridians (probably not- is hyperbole)

Weaker gravity and he's cartwheeling through the faux-beach, without the strain on his old man joints.

Per the novel, Erid has higher gravity than Earth, so Grace is dealing with some pretty strange return-to-gravity symptoms!

His balance would be super messed up due to extended low-gravity conditions. His bone density would have decreased, so he will be at increased risk of compression fractures, particularly in his lumbar spine. Also he would have lost muscle mass aboard the Hail Mary and would struggle against the gravity until he adapted. (Notably, Mary does not include any exercise equipment - Rocky would have to make him a treadmill and weightlifting equipment!) And even if he received some training (as he does in the book), he would still be emotionally and mentally unprepared for the difficulty of space at first, and therefore didn't adapt as quickly or completely as he could've. Basically, the poor guy's cerebellum is all messed up. 🥲

I do agree with that his balance would be VERY fucked, but he does say a few times at the start of the novel that he's "ripped"/shredded despite just waking, so although he doesn't have equipment there might be some things he can do to keep his muscles relatively healthy even if his bones are not.

(I think Mary may have had simulated exercise somehow while he was comatose, but I can't fully remember)

Don't get me wrong, he's not going to be lifting any eridians, but there's some hope he's not going to keel over and die 🥲

But I do like the idea that he gains the awful souvenir of chronic glass bones from his trip!

In regards to this post, I too think that grace would and should fight dirty...

Grace would already be crazy happy to see another human (more or less) and if Simon responds to that excitement with (understandable) violence, then it's possible the adrenaline would make him a little... Feral.

Your first human contact in like a year is a punch in the face, wyd?

grace being performatively optimistic when simon first shows up because 1. this guy is definitely horrifically traumatized and 2. grace really really wants to be friends with what is likely the only other human he'll ever meet. simon is weirded out partially because no one is like that in his universe but also because it does seem just a little bit forced.

then grace gets so stressed he just breaks down like "how the fuck will we ever have enough food for two people to get to erid, there was barely enough for me," and simon steps in and. puts his hand on grace's shoulder and says "it's okay, we'll... figure it out," and it feels so ridiculously forced and fake and simon cringes at himself but grace just kinda looks at him and starts to cry harder and ohhhh boy simon is too in deep to back out now so he doubles down with the comforting words that he hasn't heard since he was little

I like to imagine, in all the terrible and crazy ways Simon and Grace could meet, that in one of those moments... Grace is excited to finally see another human in space!

"Oh! A human!" :O

And then... Just a heart beat later, he thinks that he was taking too long and Earth sent someone ELSE on a death mission.

"Oh. A human."

And it makes him angry.

I think that in the first meeting between Grace and Simon, Grace should be allowed to bite and fight dirty.

I know that Simon would win a fight against Grace, they are made different and all that. However, it seems that when they meet Simon always goes ready to kill (which is justificable given his past), and Grace just there been like "Hello I'm Ryland Grace..." and PUM! Simon is over him ready to suffocate him and Grace is like fighting to breath, but never hurting Simon, just struggling against him, and the fight ends usually by: 1) Simon is able to heard reasons and gives Grace a chance but is very suspicious of him, 2) he just passes out, because pain and exhaustation would do that to your body, or 3) (and the funniest one to me) Rocky appears (like the saviour he is) and knocks Simon out.

I would want to introduce the idea of Grace fighting back.

Grace may seem like a stable person at first in comparison to his companions; an alien who had live in solitude so long that has separation issues, and Simon who is his whole case of study with mentions of cults, facing god and been a child soldier. However, Grace is an anxiety bomb, who has a bad history with people, I think that if Simon just jumps over him, Grace would fight like a mad man.

It doesn't matter which Grace you know or like the most (personally my mind have just make an amalgam of the book and the movie) he would have the motivation to fight; Book!Grace, who was drug in the spot and sent to a cell to wait to be sent to die would fight now that he can, because he knows what kind of stuff happens if he doesn't react fast enough; Movie!Grace is a person who panics, but after a moment of shock he reacts as we saw in the movie doing his best attempt to dodge guards and ran as fast as he could. Besides, Grace wants to live, that is the origin of his determination to get through things, so if he thinks that Simon is going to kill him he would fight.

Of course, he can't win, and he knows he can't win, but he would try, bitting and scratching, kicking and squirming. Let him play dirty; If Simon's amputation is fresh, let Grace prick the exposed nerve; if Simon has raw, sensible skin from the mutation, let Grace scratch there; If Simon is close enough, let Grace poke his eyes.

He can ask for forgiveness later, when he is back to be Grace, right now he is just a scare man who wants to survive.

Their legs are inverted, but she doesn't let that stop them.

They're uncomfortable walking or sitting like normal eridians, so she made her own versions of comfortable sitting (top left) and walking (the spinning).

She used to look like a regular blocky eridian but after hundreds of years of spinning they have worn down their edges. They don't mind, as it makes her more "aerodynamic"... But it does make it harder to hit the brakes and they'll often faceplant or deliberately run into things to stop.

A mini PHM comic about Grace growing old. I wanted to explore two ideas: Rocky dealing with Grace’s dementia and Grace wanting to donate his body to science. I spend so much time on figuring out the dialogue (some part still feel clunky to me) but I hope it express my thoughts on where I think Grace’s life would go :)

Sorry if you already answered this. But I’ve been struggling with rendering. I was wondering if you could show me how you render? I love your art and it is genuinely one of my favourite styles. <333

here's a timelapse of my colouring process! I start with a colour fill that I put an opacity lock on, then I usually go in with a skin colour, then hair, then clothes, and tidy everything up! The main bruhses I use for colouring are the tiger brush set and the horse oil brush, both are available in the clip studio asset store :D

The tiger bite brush is my favourite right now for colouring, the colour variation has changed the way I colour a lot and makes it easier to add cool variation to my art without trying too hard! The horse oil brush has a nice texture amd shape and blends stuff in a really nice way :))

I forgot to record this step but I also usually colour the lineart! After locking the opacity and making the layer a multiply layer, I use the horse oil brush and usually a red colour to colour the lineart. Usually I pick a very vibrant red and go over the lines lightly, no I can add saturation variation to the lines :D
