My biggest concern when adopting a greyhound was finding one who was cat-friendly. Ellie isn’t just cat-friendly, she’s essentially cat-blind. Meemaw, one of our scraggly ferals who lives on the front porch, decided to jump the fence into our backyard this morning when I let Ellie out. She scaled the fence as soon as she saw Ellie walk over… but Ellie never saw her. She smelled her, but never even looked up. God love her and her orange-cat tendencies. 🧡 June 11, 2026 at 10:05AM via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DZcsRMQFgob/
It’s been 567 days since I lost my partner in crime. My little bear. I’ve been waking up thinking about her a lot more the last few weeks, thinking of things I wish I could tell her or show her. It feels bittersweet because it hurts, but I don’t ever want to stop thinking of her. I never want to lose that feeling of “oh, Stella would love this.” (Or of the “oh, Stella would hate that” 😂) May 27, 2026 at 07:37AM via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DY1ygAstoWj/
I talked a couple friends into coming with me to see @yelyahwilliams at @theryman on Monday, and we made it into a fun little two-day Nashville trip. Don’t underestimate the importance of friends who will walk down dark alleys with you while you take photos of places you remember from 20+ years ago. We buried Fat Baby’s ashes under a small Japanese maple tree in our yard today. She used to love lying under the one in our neighbor’s yard (much to his chagrin), so now she can rest under one planted just for her. She deserved better than she got, and we miss her every day. Recently I bought a decade-old camera that some might consider to be obsolete tech. But I’ve always wanted one, and I found a used copy in great condition. It weighs a ton and I will probably only ever use it to take portraits of my and my friends’ pets. And I’m more than ok with that. Yesterday we went over to the Sculpture Fields to walk Ellie and found ourselves in the middle of a lantern festival. I kinda want to go back and see this all lit up at night now. March 1, 2026 at 01:44PM via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DVWjJvqAbr2/

Almost 10 years ago, I walked into @riverviewanimalhospital to discuss how we could get the newly-adopted Star Fox to eat better. Or to eat anything. It led us down a path that included home-cooking meals with supplements, trying a large variety of high- and low-end dog foods, and managing her pain with eastern medicine thanks to the help of acupuncture at @chai.holistic.vet. Star Fox lived her best life with us for two more years until she died of a suspected cancerous tumor on her spine, and I learned a whole lot during those two years. Mostly about how to use eastern medicine alongside western, but also how to listen to a 13-year-old dog with whom I had no history with and limited medical records for. I learned to be kind, patient, and curious and was rewarded a million times over. Yesterday I found myself back in Dr. Shulman’s exam room, this time with Ellie—who we indirectly adopted due to Star Fox. About a year after Fox died, Ian and I had made the decision that adopting a retired racing greyhound would be a fitting next step; we loved being Star Fox’s retirement home but wanted a dog who wasn’t quite at that super senior age yet. Ellie came to live with us at six years old and has mostly been an active, goofy, puppy-like dog, so it’s been a bit jarring to see her finally start showing signs of being old even though she’s 12 now. So I’m using the lessons I learned almost a decade ago with Star Fox to help Ellie now, or at least I’m trying. Luckily her bloodwork came back ok, and the symptoms of her spinal issues have been improving, so we’re trying various foods and starting acupuncture and physical therapy. I remember how scared I was back when I was first figuring this all out with Star Fox, but also how much support I had from her medical teams and friends. Ellie isn’t the same dog, but learning how to navigate the systems and advocate for Star Fox made me more confident to face this new senior era with her. I’m hoping that counts for something. For the last few months Ellie has been struggling with bouts of lameness in her back right leg, so about a week ago we took her for a consult with both an orthopedic surgeon and a neurologist over at @vcsgvets. Based on their initial exams we scheduled an MRI for this past Friday, and the results confirmed the neurologist’s diagnosis of lumbosacral stenosis—a narrowing of the spinal canal at the last vertebra. Luckily X-rays ruled out osteosarcoma, which is usually a greyhound owner’s biggest worry. Apparently this diagnosis is common in greyhounds (and other dogs who experienced a lot of intense activity), and we’re starting to treat it with a series of steroid epidurals. She’s already had one, and we’ll repeat it again in two weeks. Once we have an idea of how helpful those are, we’ll likely introduce acupuncture and physical therapy. And of course, she’ll continue her current regimen of joint supplements, fish oil, light exercise… Luckily Ellie is a good sport (the neurologist said she’s the bravest greyhound she’s ever treated 🥹), and is happy to go along with our plan. Our goal is to keep her happy, and as long as she can run a few laps a day and go on walks she’s happy as a clam. January 26, 2026 at 06:26PM via Instagram https://instagr.am/p/DT_eHHYgXb6/
Growing up in Chicagoland, surrounded by amazing bagels on every corner, the absolute lack of even a middling substitute hit me hard when I moved to the Nashville area for college. Eventually I started working on West End in 2005 and became a regular at Star Bagel, but then they became Q-Anon nazis. For a while I worked sorta close to Proper Bagel on Belmont, but then we moved to Chattanooga and I found myself in a bagel desert. Yes, Niedlov’s is a great bakery but their bagels aren’t it. And Honeyseed does Montreal-style, which in my opinion isn’t a bagel at all. Then @brothers.bagel.chatt entered the game and my life was changed. It took me weeks of driving all the way to goddamned Hixson and then being bummed that there was no parking and having to drive all the way back to Highland Park before I could finally try it, but the wait and many attempts were worth it. Even the drive out there would’ve been worth it if I could’ve counted on being able to park. But I almost never could, or I’d go later and find them sold out. 😭 So you can imagine my utter joy when I learned they were opening a location on Brainerd Road—with a parking lot that has more than five spots (and in an area where you can also duck down a side street or into a neighboring business’ lot to park). I stopped by this morning and grabbed a half dozen in less than five minutes. My heart is so full (of carbs). Y’all go check them out and buy stuff so they won’t close.
