the erotic tension between sam and meg masters keeps me alive because it’s sam (voyeur) and meg (sexual object) at the window in shadow and it’s sam (unmoored) and meg (the light on the dock) at the bus station in scarecrow and it’s sam (victim) and meg (rapist) when she ties him up and it’s sam (body) and meg (rider) in born under a bad sign. the classic dialectic of rapist-who-penetrates and victim-who-is-penetrated is subverted and upheld in turns. meg marks him (possession branding) and inhabits him and uses his body for sexual violence against both jo and dean. at all times it’s meg that holds all of the power in the dynamic and in this respect it’s positively brutal that she insults dean in the bar for treating sam like luggage; she smoothly replaces him as sam’s master whenever she can. it’s sexy and horrifying and perfect <3

returning to this post-goodbye stranger and thinking about meg’s final conversation with sam. not only is there a callback to her s2 possession of him but she does so empathetically; an attempt to show sam that she understands wanting out of this life, and that she understands how falling in love can motivate a person to leave it all behind. reminds me strongly of her line in 1x16 shadow when sam asks her why she’s doing all this and she says “the same as you. loyalty, and love.” meg and sam are foils to the very end; and while meg’s understanding of sam is not reciprocal it does exist, and meg has never tried to convey that same sort of understanding to any other character. and the fact that meg dies almost heroically, as sam watches, as sam escapes—it’s this full circle moment. sam watching meg to the very end.
