Leadership Qualities - COLL148
What makes a great and effective leader and why do we need them? An effective leader is a strong, selfless, and considerate person and someone who will always be there when they are needed. I tend to idealize that leaders should be similar to a motherly figure, even if they are a man. Someone who will take charge, standup for what they think is right, help you get through difficult times and shows compassion, and someone who knows when and how to take the blame with their dignity still intact. Without leaders there wouldn’t be much structure and it could be assumed that people would live haphazardly. Leaders not only help take control and direct a course of action, but they inspire people to become great. If they are a good and effective leader they will wish that their followers will accomplish even greater achievements then they have themselves. John Chambers, CEO and Chairman of Cisco is a leader within the internet and networking industry, he is a leader that I look to for direction in my career, someone who can be at the top of a large company, but still be looked at as a great individual. Although there are many different qualities that make leaders, I believe to stand out as a great leader, one must incorporate a selfless attitude, a desire to inspire others, and integrity.
Networking, the internet, and computers are things that I have always been drawn to and so it would make sense to work towards a career in those areas. A network systems administrator is someone who is able to manage, maintain, and help to control a network to keep it running at optimum speed and capacity. My degree program should take me until February 2014 to obtain an Associate degree, if I continue to take two classes a session. That would only be the first degree that I would want to obtain. I have found that if I want to become a president and CEO of a company, it would benefit me to obtain multiple degrees. Most leaders will have multiple degrees along with years of experience, before climbing to the top of the ladder. The leader I have chosen in my area of study is no different; per his executive biography, John Chambers states he has a bachelor’s degree, a law degree, and a master’s degree. ("Cisco Blog," 2011)
John Chambers, CEO and Chairman of Cisco Systems is the leader that I have chosen. Chambers has been CEO of Cisco since 1995 and has seen the company grow to become a giant in the networking industry. The company has grown immensely from what is had been back in 1995 when John Chambers took hold of the reins. Chambers has helped the company grow to what they are today, industry leaders. “When Cisco Systems Chairman and CEO John Chambers speaks, the industry listens.” (Kennedy, K & Hooper, L, 2003) Chambers has received a multitude of awards in leadership and has also received recognition from the government. Chambers has found a way to harness all of his abilities and qualities that make a great and effective leader and that is something not only the industry looks up to but everyone could look up to. “Chambers has an ability to rally his employees into obtaining new and retaining current growth within the industry” (Kennedy, K & Hooper, L, 2003). John Chambers has the qualities of a great leader and that is something that I admire and hope to become one day.
What qualities make effective leaders? There is such an expansive list of word that can be used to describe an effective leader. Compassion and assertiveness drive and imagination, and even sacrifice are just a few of the words that one could use to describe effective leaders. An article I was reading had one about an “Effective Communicator…the leaders who are considered effective communicators are those who are able to speak plainly, clearly, truthfully, honestly and sincerely to others in the organization” (Wright, L, 2009). Communication is something that is important in every aspect of life, especially in a leader.
What makes John Chambers the leader he is? Chamber shows that he is selfless by wanting to help his employees, to make sure they are happy and healthy, “After learning recently that a Cisco employee needed a surgical procedure that only three doctors in the country could perform, Chambers called the surgeons himself to make arrangements” (Hooper,L, 2002). Chambers is also inspiration to other individuals as well as to the industry, by bringing Cisco up to the top and kept pushing the company in a forward movement. Even still by showing integrity through the way he runs Cisco and how he presents his own life to the public. Those are some of the qualities that make him such a great leader.
Who is Megan Wilson? I am Megan Wilson and I am a dreamer with a goal of success. We all have our own strengths and weaknesses and after carefully going through a list of what I feel what my strongest and weakest are, I found that I am on my journey to becoming a great leader. For my strengths, I like to think that I have a high appreciation of others, “A good leader will instinctively seek to draw out the good qualities of other people.” (Pettinger, T, 2011), I consider myself to be a selfless person by always trying to think of the greater good and those out there before myself, and I also try to consider myself to be an inspirational person. “Leaders are PASSIONATE people, who live with great enthusiasm.” (Lock, C). As for my weaknesses, I am still working on them so that one day I will become a stronger better person. I have found that my listening skills are not what they should be. I read that, “A good listener hears not only facts but also feelings.” (DeKlein, K and Penstone, M, 2011) and that is something that I must overcome and perfect if I ever decide to further my career or better my life, work and personal. Also, my self-esteem is a weakness that needs repairing or revamping. I have always thought that people who excelled in middle and high school would be the ones that would succeed in life and that the people who didn’t, wouldn’t get very far. I am learning that you always have a choice to change your path and your thinking and that everyone can succeed.
You could be a CEO, a mother or father, a network system administrator, or even a student and you could show signs of leadership. How you use your abilities and qualities will eventually determine your strength as a leader. Leaders are needed in order for business and personal sustainability and growth. Effective leaders are grown from their own desires to succeed, yet will still be highly influenced by outside factors. We all have many qualities in life, like poise, fierceness, and assertiveness, but by having selflessness, inspiration, and even have great integrity in your life you will be a great leader. Leaders will always be among us, the fact is they are needed in every aspect of our lives, but the question remains, are they a great and effective one?
