My best friend’s dog, Duncan, is my favorite dog. I have for a while now found ugly dogs/animals to be my favorites and Duncan was the dog that made me realize my love for all the ugly babies out there. He is shaped like a sausage, has like 3 teeth, and he screams like a person if you touch his ears even though he’s lived a posh life since the day he came into this world. I realized that the only people who truly get offended by Cultural Appropriation are Americans. Ask a Jamaican if you can wear dreadlocks and they’ll most likely say they don’t care. Go to Japan wearing a Kimono and no one will be offended. Please remember that these people have voices too and can speak for themselves. Ok but that’s the whole point, cultural appropriation negatively effects the people in the diaspora. You misrepresenting traditional Japanese clothing has no impact on the culture or day to day lives of Japanese people living in Japan but it contradicts and misrepresents Japanese descendants and immigrants in places where Japanese culture is not dominant. The people of Jamaica may or may not be personally offended at you destroying your hair to imitate locks but if a nonblack person is “worldly and cute” with it but black Americans are being fired, that’s a problem. Like, a huge problem.

Teachers sometimes have biases towards certain students, and more often it is black students. And our education system is systematically racist in myriad ways! From these stupid tests to unequal funding in schools.

It’s difficult to admit that education - that bastion for success, opportunity, and progress - is itself steeped in racism. But need to do everything that is possible to make it better!
