One Day at a Time
I see him everywhere. Heâs in the halls, on my phone, worst of all heâs in my mind. I canât seem to shake him but I have to. I have to let go of what we never had, even though thereâs always going to be a little part of me that hurts at the mention of his name. His name used to be the most beautiful thing I heard. It used to make me nervous in the best way. Now, I canât even look at anyone with that name, itâs marred. We never dated, we never had anything more than a one sided love. To him, I was a joke. A stupid girl that fell hard, and he knew it. However he decided to play me like I was a chess piece, he had me under his thumb. To me, he was my hope. The one relationship I thought I could get right. I thought he was going to be my first true love. But now that heâs decided to leave me, once and for all, itâs time I put him in the past. I need to be free of him, I canât continue this way. Thereâs always going to be a little part of me that thinks heâll change your mind, that heâll come back to me. And thereâs always going to be a part of me that will love him, even though he broke and continues to break my heart. If I want to forget him, I have to take a step back, breathe, just take it one day at a time.

Wondering when itâs your turn.
Yearning for your chance to come.
Itâs like a fire that needs to be extinguished immediately and if not it will cause extensive damage.
But the world doesnât seem to care.
It keeps throwing obstacles at you.
False hopes.
Telling you, âmaybe youâre not the oneâ or âmaybe youâre not meant to be lovedâ.
I deserve it.
It may sound selfish but I deserve to be loved, like everyone else in this world.
And to think there could be someone out there for me.
Seems impossible.
Of course it seems impossible when everyoneâs telling you it is.
You feel worthless.
Loveless.
Hopeless.
Lonely.
And you canât help but think, everytime you get your hopes up.
Every boy you meet.
Everytime you fall for him.
Every laugh.
Text.
Phone call.
Meet up.
You find yourself thinking,
âThis could be itâ.
A week passes and you find yourself crying,
âIâm never the oneâ
But, âyou have no reason to be sadâ they said.
âYouâll find someone some dayâ they said.
They donât know the pain of feeling like that someday, wonât ever come.
Because you inevitably feel,
Truly feel,
That you wonât ever be the one.

Quick Tip on Giving Characters Flaws:
Turn their best qualities completely upside down. Turn those traits around on them. Theyâre compassionate? Maybe theyâre way too easily forgiving and get screwed over by it repeatedly. Extremely outgoing and extroverted? Maybe theyâre apathetic to those who struggle with even having small talk, and make those people highly uncomfortable. Brave? Maybe they can be reckless and often get themselves in unnecessary danger.
Donât sprinkle in flaws at the end. Base them on something. They should enhance your character and make them more three-dimensional. They shouldnât be an afterthought, and the goal shouldnât be to make your characters ârelatableâ.
The Importance of Side Plots
A Guest Post by Cait
In every story, we have the main (A) plot; the detective is trying to find the jewel thief
AND
The side (B) plot; the detective is going through a divorce Â
Most stories contain more than one side plot. There can be as many as you like. What is the purpose of them, you say? Iâll tell you!
Side plots make the story more dynamic. They give âscreen timeâ to your minor characters, offer relief from the main tension and allow your protagonist to shine in different areas. You know what your detective is like at work, what are they like at home?
Side plots will begin after the main plot is introduced and are resolved before the main plot ends. They introduce storylines that are important, but secondary to the main plot.
How do you write side plots?
Think about:
Who are your minor characters? What role do they play in your story? Who are they in relation to your protagonist/antagonist? Do they have their own arc?
Do they have a love interest? â Common side plots involve your protagonistâs relationships. Unless youâre writing a romance story, a romance arc often belongs to a side plot. The romance doesnât always have to work out, but it is important that your love interest is a fully dimensional, fleshed-out character. Give your readers a reason to root for, or alternatively, boo for them.
What does your protagonistâs life look like? Who are they in different environments? Whatâs important to them? What are their hobbies? What is their daily, mundane routine? Â
Where has your protagonist/antagonist been? What is in their past? How has it impacted their present self? Are they harbouring secrets? Are they holding on to something? Where do their strengths and weaknesses come from? Â
Where else is the conflict? You have your main conflict; catching the villain. What else is going on in their life? Are they struggling to pay rent? Do they miss their ex? Is their mother unwell?
How can all this add to the story? Do these scenes reveal important information? Do they develop your character? Do they develop relationships? Do they relate to the overall plot? Do they build the tone and message of your story?
Without any side plots, your story can become one-dimensional. Your readers may get bored, or be overwhelmed by the main arc. Give your baby dimension!
Your side plots can be whatever you like. They should add to the story as a whole, even if it is something as simple as a silly prank war between your protagonist and their neighbour. Simple things can add meaning if written well. As long as it fits your vision, write away!

Body Language Cheat Sheet for Writers
As described by Selnickâs article:
Author and doctor of clinical psychology Carolyn Kaufman has released a one-page body language cheat sheet of psychological âtellsâ (PDF link) fiction writers can use to dress their characters.
A Drop In The Ocean
I have never felt this way about anyone in my entire life. Weâve known each other for only a few months but it feels like youâve always been there with me. I canât remember a time before you, because you have taken up every single damn thought in my head. And I hate you for it but I also love you for it. Youâre the only one that I want. The only person I want to have deep conversations with at 2:00 am. The only person I want to go on a McDonaldâs date with. You, my love, are the only person that I want to embrace after a bad day. You make me feel like itâs possible to find that one person in your life that you are completely infatuated with, that you never want to let go. And Iâm afraid that if I mention the possibility of us being together once more, that itâll be the time you finally give up on me and forget I ever existed. To you, Iâm just a drop in the ocean, a change in the weather. For me, you are the one that I pray to end up with. Alas, all thoughts being said, itâs not unclear that youâre the only thing I want right now, and will want for as long as I possibly can, however, you decided that you didnât want me, leaving me to believe that Iâm unlovable and hating you for 0.5 seconds, then going back to wanting you like crazy. You have no idea what you do to me, and I wish I could tell you but I just canât. I donât want to pester you about something you arenât going to consider and I certainly donât want to lose you. So even if I do see you walk by, I just die a little bit inside knowing we won't ever happen, and because you are going to get tired of me, and when you do Iâll still be falling for you, even when after time has passed and you find someone, Iâll still be there wanting you, but you won't ever want me. It hurts more than you know. I wish I could tell you, but I just canât.
