It’s a breezy summer day and the rustling from the leaves outside sound like whispers from my small apartment. I’m sitting in front of my laptop, silently studying the 1.6 billion faces speaking simultaneously in front of me. It’s Monday, the day of the weekly conference call between all Muslims. We have been required to attend this Skype meeting from the the tender age of fetus, but I had never spoken in one of them before. 

That changes today. 

“Hey guys, what if…” I start to say. 

Nobody hears me, but I refuse to be silent. How could I show my face again on Tumblr if I couldn’t even save my mayonnaise friends from death? How could I expect to earn their respect? Anon was right; why hadn’t I done this before? Thousands of lives had paid the price for my ignorance, but not anymore.

“What if you guys….. stopped killing people.“ 

Suddenly, silence. 

1,643,398,023 pairs of eyes are on me. My heart is in my throat as the ISIS leader gives me a blank expression. 

A single tear rolls down my cheek. "Please.” I say with a broken voice. 

He is moved. 

“Aight”.

My fingers are almost shaking as I carefully type in the ten digit phone number I have had memorized my entire life. The buttons on my home phone seem to glow a bit more dull, and even the ringing of the phone from the other end seems to be agonized, almost as if the world is telling me to hang up. But I refuse to give up; I can’t let my lily-white friends down. Not again.

The phone rings once. Twice. Three times. Still no answer. Just as I am about to hang up, there is a click.

All I can hear is heavy breathing.

“Hello….” I say quietly, my voice shaking. “Is….. Is this Muslim?”

There was a long silence before I heard a voice answer “ya lol.”

“I was thinking………..” I begin cautiously. “Maybe murder is…………bad.”

“Habibi, I…..I don’t understand. What are you trying to say….?” The voice seems shaken.

“What if…….world peace is good and killing people is…………not good”

He lets out an audible gasp. “Are you saying ISIS is…….bad?”

“Maybe death is…….not good.” I continue. My heart is racing. I remind myself that I am saving thousands of lives, and inhale.

The silence from the other end of the line is almost deafening. He seemed to be thinking, as if he had never considered this idea before in his life. Truly I had opened his heart and his mind. This…. This could end terrorism.

“Muslim….Please.” I whisper.

I hear a tear roll down his cheek, with my Muslim Communication Hearing™, and hold my breath as he finally breathes out his next words.

“Kk.”

He’s a softie who totally cannot help himself. He tries to be all tough but he cannot deny his nature.

Net Neutrality is important, and the FCC shouldn’t take it down. Here are some examples of what would happen(as far as I know) if the bill gets passed and Net Neutrality gets eradicated to you and basic consumers, or normal people that use social media:

You will be forced to pay to use websites, for example, if you want to use Twitter then you may end up paying 5-40(??) dollars just to use it.

If you can even afford the internet, then you most likely will only be able to afford slow-as-a-snail internet, which will cost a shit ton of money, and it will be a miracle if you can even afford decent internet.

If you can’t afford it, then, like you can guess, you will be stuck with no internet at all, or you’ll have slow ass internet but you most likely won’t be able to be able to afford free social medias (Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and so on.)

You will also end up paying taxes to use these, so it will make the tax problem way worse than it already is.

Now, this is what getting rid of Net Neutrality will most likely do to businesses such as Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and so on:

They will most likely go out of business because most people won’t be able to afford to pay for the social medias that once were free, and well, affordable.

If they can afford it, then they will most likely be turned away by the fact that they have to pay just to use the website.

They’ll go bankrupt because there won’t be as many consumers as there once were, and even though there may be a few, they won’t be enough to keep their website alive, which will leave the social media to have to shut down.

There are literally only a few select number of people that will benefit from this, but it won’t benefit them for long, and definetly not in the long run.

Getting rid of Net Neutrality won’t benefit at all, there are no benefits to getting rid of it at all unless you count the few select number of businesses that will get a little bit of extra cash from ‘premiums’ and 'bundles’ and shit, but it won’t last for long. Soon, they’ll be going out of business too, and the cash from the extras they have won’t pay for anything.

Please, add onto this if you have anything else to say about this, but we need to protect NetNeutrality, just do it civilly.

Everyone please listen up

Net Neutrality has been in debate since June, and now it’s back to being one of the main topics. But what happened to it trending #1? “Verizon, is that you. Did you get a bit angry about the fact that there are individuals willing to fight for their rights?”

For all of you who don’t know, Net Neutrality is basically the freedom of the internet. Without it, large companies would be allowed to charge extra for things like using Google, watching Youtube, using Amazon, going on other websites, etc. However, there are 5 individuals who are in charge of deciding what happens to this freedom and they are voting. Only 2 of them want to keep it. We literally need 1 more person to save Net Neutrality.

Guys, if you don’t care, then I’ll give you a reason. Are you in a fandom? Do you connect with people from the U.S and other countries thanks to this fandom? Have you made friends with any of them? Do you like reading, watching, writing, or drawing fan art, or fanfics? Ok, if you answers yes to any of these then let me ask you one more thing. Are you willing to pay extra money, that you wouldn’t before, just to stay connected with your fandom? Remember, if you don’t pay you lose all of this. What if you can’t afford this extra cost? What then? Do you simply say goodbye to your fandom, your friends, your passion?

For some of us in fandoms, these people are the only thing we have. We help each other even if we are halfway across the world. I have seen what we can do. But when you have something like Net Neutrality gone, these individuals, books, art, etc., that you were once connected to won’t be there. “But for the cost of an extra $10.99 we can include Google to your monthly plan.”

Some people seriously use the internet as a way to make money through so they can survive. People use the internet when they’re in a bad situation so they can get the support they need so they can get out of that bad situation. If we lose it it’s going to be so much harder. I am one of those people who used the internet for both. The internet is all I got to make a living through. My Commissions and adopts and animations are all I have. I can’t even begin to imagine what would happen if suddenly I wouldn’t be able to do that anymore and have no source of income.

what no net neutrality would mean for you

If you’re confused as to what the end of net neutrality means for you, let me clear that up. (Most net neutrality posts are informative af but also filled with absolute jargon so)

So basically, if ISPs are allowed to control the internet:

1. They will create a “fast lane” and a “slow lane”. Fast lane = normal/better loading speed. Slow lane = really fricking bad loading speed to the point of near uselessness.

2. They will charge websites and companies a considerable fee in order to get into this “fast lane” and not be totally useless.

So if you’re nonprofit or a small startup, too bad! You’re slow and useless!

3. This means these websites and companies need more money. How are they getting more money? YOU. THEY WILL CHARGE YOU MORE MONEY BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING CHARGED MORE MONEY.

4. So, you have less money. You can only use the sites that are in this “fast lane”. You are penned in with less choices. This sucks.

5. To make matters worse (what now right), the end of net neutrality also means ISPs can censor what you see. They can filter news articles. They can take away activist posts and political discussions. THEY. WILL. CONTROL. THE. INTERNET.

Now that you know what net neutrality would mean for you on a daily basis, do us all a favor and complain.

Yes, you heard me right.

The FCC is about to kill Net Neutrality, which violates our freedom of speech. Net Neutrality is vital to today’s day and age as it allows us to post and say anything we please. To get rid of it would be a complete violation of the 1st Amendment. Ajit Pai, the FCC’s new chairman, was a lawyer for Verizon. He, along with those who support the repeal of Net Neutrality, are a threat to internet freedom itself.
