Soul and Maka are actually two sides of the same coin when it comes to being kids struggling with perfectionism. The way they handled their perfectionism however, is on the opposite ends: Maka through overachieving and overexerting, Soul through not trying and staying 'cool'. This dynamic is perfectly summarized in this scene.

In the end they actually help pull each other to the balanced middle: Maka can finally get the rest she craves since Soul is comfortable in knowing their limits, while Soul gets the spark he needs to start doing his best for everything.

At the root of it all, Maka thought that if she wasn't perfect for everything, then she deserves to be abandoned. While Soul thought anything less than his brother's excellence is like a moral failure, so he rather not try.

Hence,

'you don't need to be Black Star or Kid or Patty or Liz or the most perfect angel to have the most special spot in my sheet music.'

'I don't care if you think your music is objectively dogshit or it got madness or the crowd ignored you. I want to keep listening to it because it came from you.'

They both remind each other they are human. And to stay 'courageous' with that reminder.
