As a teacher, it was hard to really say how you’d influence your students. As the ‘cool teacher,’ he always had a leg up on the competition, but the real impact of his job wasn’t something he’d see for years. And here he was, listening to how he’d inspired them in little ways.

Lisa, a student from his second year of teaching, reminisced about how their field trip to the Exploratorium got her interested in physics. Omar, a student from his first ever class, told him how a science experiment that went so wrong they had to evacuate the school, led him into chemistry. Ji-Young looked at him with a wide smile and explained that he’d ended up at NASA because of Grace’s sacrifice.

That revelation sent a pang of something down his chest. This world knew he’d been forced, but did they really understand why Stratt had put him down like she had? That she’d looked at him and only saw a coward?

If his smile fell, no one commented.
