Herbert West is so conceptually strange as the central character of a horror franchise because he’s not a slasher or otherwise a typical villain, and he’s only the protagonist in the sense that he’s a central character and the film’s perspective is frequently sympathetic towards him. the final girl is his homoerotic deuteragonist buddy (which is why I think Beyond Re-Animator is the weakest of the trilogy, since that key dynamic is missing). Herbert is both a victim and the perpetrator of the horrors. instead of coming back from the dead to terrorize a new group of characters in Bride, the magical resurrection device of horror sequelae is used to reunite him with his best friend, and if that’s not the very definition of soulmates to you…
