Chapter 5: Heir Apparent
The nightmares appeared again last night. They dwindled a little after talking and staying with Hal, but not entirely. Vivid memories of what the asshole did to my innocence as well as my mind. I get out of bed without waking anyone up or setting off Aya’s system. Sitting up, I looked around the room to calm my nerves down.
“Green Lantern Rory, you have woken up at the same time every day for the past week. Is something troubling you?” Aya asks with as much concern as a navigation system can give.
“ It’s alright Aya. Thank you for the concern.” I responded as I got off the bed and headed to the door.
“I have noted down that at night your heart rate and brainwave activity are higher than they have been in the past month as well as that you have been moving quite often lately while you are resting. Might I suggest melatonin and chamomile tea before bed to help put and keep you asleep better?”
“ That won't be necessary aya. Once again I am fine.” I replied.
Continuing to the kitchen/pantry, all it held were food canisters for all species in the galaxy that we may or may not encounter as well as water bottles. I grabbed the container with marked fruit salad and a water bottle and moved to the “Dining Room”. Once the doors opened my eyes set on Razor sitting at the table, staring at the wall with pure anger in his eyes. I sat on the opposite side of him and started opening my food container when I was interrupted.
“Why are you here? Why are you awake?” Razer questioned me. I paused what I was doing, but didn’t look up into his eyes too scared to see the emotions that I had been trying to keep back for the past 5 minutes surface and show him a weakness that he didn’t need to see.
“Rough memories. What about you? Why are you awake and over here?”
“ The same predicament that you are in.”
“What a wonderful coincidence,” I replied, picking at the fruit I grabbed. I slowly looked up at him and into his eyes. The moment my eyes traveled to his, it became clear that he was already looking at me. Our gazes locked on each other, refusing to cower down to the other. With our stare to the death, I took notice of his vivid blue eyes, reminding me of ice settled on a like in the middle of a freshly frosted forest. The dark symmetrical shape around his eyes further enhances the contrast brilliantly. It’s as if I’m looking at the stars in the pitch-black sky back on earth.
“Are you just gonna stare at me all day/ or is there something you are wanting?” Razer asked raising what looked like a black line that connected to the others that rested on his perfectly sculpted face.
“I don’t know. You were the one staring at me first.” I reply with a smirk on my face. “ Is there something you would like to share with the class Razer?”
The door slides open before Razer has a chance to speak. Kilowog walked in with what appeared to be a bowl full of maggots. Sitting down next to me, he immediately dives right in. I noticed that while Razor has been working on reigning in his disgust for certain things, he still has some ways to go when it comes to how Kilowog tends to eat. Killowog noticed this as well however he did not vocalize it as he usually does. He simply slowed down on his eating. Looking over at me he saw I was just staring at the table, lost in thought. The only thing that is going through my mind right now is looking more at Razer but I’m scared to. Because as we all know that just creepy as hell to randomly be staring at one person, like a pedophile staring at children, at Disney World. Creepy. However, I can’t shake Razer from my head. From the time we all met, his temporary imprisonment, till now my mind keeps imagining scenarios of the two of us together in a relationship that could never work.
“ Is there something on my face?” Kilowog asked concerningly.
” No, just your nose.” I answered, looking at him with a smirk on my face and quickly returning to my fruit salad and water.
” You know you can be a real smart ass. You know that.” Hal interrupted while walking into the room and over to us.
”Well I am smart and I do have an ass. So I take that as a compliment.” I replied without even looking at him.
” I don’t feel safe answering that.”
” One because you know it's true, and two because that really wouldn’t sound right.”
“ sensors have located the energy signature of a green lantern power ring,” Aya said over the P.A. System, as she began building her body like before. “Approximately 8.2 Teraquads from us.”
”Great work aya.” I replied having finished my food, disposed of it properly, and started making my way to the cock pit.
”Plot a course directly to that signal, we're doing a little recruiting." Hal ordered as he moved to the pilot seat. Kilowog, Razer, and Aya followed as well and we all sat at our stations.
"Which if successful, will bring the total of your green lantern force to 4. Atrocitus will be shaking in his boots." Razer commented sarcastically.
I turned my chair to Razer "5 including you" I teased him with a smirk and a wink. I noticed his cheeks got darker, almost like he was blushing.
"And there would be 6 of us, if you included me," Aya interjected.
Kilowog groaned at that statement."Right. how could I forget when you're constantly bringing it up." Kilowog turned to Hal and started whispering harshly "Jordan, you got to stuff the genie back in the bottle. You can't let our nav computer get used to walking around like a real person."
"you may be unaware that I can hear every sound on this vessel."
"Aya, I appreciate the enthusiasm but I think it's best if you stay with the ship." Hal reasoned with her.
As we landed in a vast field of tall lavender grass, we took a moment to appreciate the beauty of the scenery. After a brief discussion, we decided to leave Razer and Aya behind on the ship to avoid drawing any suspicions about us carrying a Red lantern. We also wanted to ensure Aya's safety, so it was best that she remained on the ship.
With our plan in motion, we flew higher and closer towards the Palace, which sat majestically on top of a hill. As we made our way through the city, we noticed that many of the civilians waved at us, and I took the opportunity to make some small animals dance in the sky, much to their delight.
Finally, we reached the Palace and landed gracefully. To show our respect for the royal family, we decided to walk up the steps instead of flying. However, as we got to the door, Hal and Kilowog, who were waiting for us, opened it without knocking. The sudden movement caused the guards in the room to become alarmed, and they pointed their weapons at us.
"Great timing as usual Hal," Kilowog said sarcastically.
"It's a gift."
"Hold," As we gazed toward the center of the room, a distinct voice caught our attention. A woman with a unique lavender complexion and light purple hair gracefully sauntered towards us. Her attire was a stunning off-shoulder bodysuit in a mesmerizing blue-green shade, paired with elegant heels and a trailing train. Her black eyes and dark purple lips were accentuated by the striking black triangular lines that extended from the corners of her eyes to the bottom of her cheeks. She adorned her hands and forearms with exquisite bracelets that glimmered in the light, a diamond-shaped locket, and a magnificent crown that added to her regal aura. "observe their garb and manner. They are Green Lanterns and friends." She smiled as she looked at us. She looked at me longer as if I reminded her of someone.
"I am Queen Iolande. I welcome you to Betrassus." She spoke as she walked towards us and let the guards allow us to walk to her.
As Iolande stood there, a young man appeared by her side. He had the same striking skin tone and piercing eyes as Iolande, but his head was completely bald. Instead of hair, he had what appeared to be tattooed lines etched into his scalp. These lines were similar to Iolande's, but more faint and subtle. He was dressed in a stunning pale blue and teal suit, which was typical attire for his cultural background. The intricate details of the suit caught the light and shimmered in the sun, making him stand out in the crowd. "Duloc used to tell me stories of other Green Lanterns, but I thought they were nothing but tall tales."
"This is my brother Prince Ragnar." As I walked towards him, I noticed a longing expression in his eyes. He took a step closer to me, but before he could say anything, Ioldance placed a gentle hand on his shoulder and shook her head. I could sense the disappointment in his gaze, but he quickly regained his composure. Hal took the opportunity to step closer to her, took her hand, and placed a kiss on it.
"Iolande, your name sounds like a waterfall," Hal commented, making her blush. I giggled a little while Kilowog groaned and whispered to him. "worst line ever." I noticed the man in golden armor was seething at Hal. To try and defuse the situation, I stepped up and began to speak with Iolande.
"We're looking for the Green Lantern that serves your planet."
"Green Lantern Duloc. he has protected Betrassus for many years."
"We need his help to fight a deadly threat on the frontier."
"you speak of the Red Lanterns. Several of our off-planet outposts have been attacked by these vicious Marauders." Iolande Shakes her head sadly, as he brother comments further.
"you're probably the only one strong enough to fight off the red lanterns."
"ENOUGH!!" The man in gold armor stepped towards us menacingly. "Batrassuss doesn't need Green Lanterns, we need a KING to command its army! And that will be me."
"Cothack. Once again you overstep your bounds."Iolande warns him.
"It is our custom. If the Queen is coronated without a husband, then the greatest warrior may claim her hand and share the throne." Ragnar explained to us as we looked confused about what was happening.
"Face it princess you don't have what it takes to rule this kingdom alone." As Cothack spoke, his words struck a chord within me, reminding me of my father's voice. The frustration and anger I had bottled up inside me were almost palpable, and I found myself ready to confront Cothack. However, Kilowog and Hal quickly intervened, grabbing my arms and shaking their heads in disapproval, knowing that it wouldn't be wise to act impulsively.
"Will no one challenge Cothack for my sister's hand" Before I had a chance to speak up a voice behind me beat me to it.
"I will challenge Cothack," turning around we saw Green Lantern Duloc floating towards us. "for the hand of Iolande."
"I think we found our man." Hal beamed.
After a welcome feast, the other guests went home, Kilowog went back to the ship, and Hal went to talk with Duloc. As I moved to follow Kilowog, my hand was pulled back. Looking behind me I saw Iolande.
"Green Lantern Rory, would you accompany me for a walk? There is something I wish to talk to you about." She looked at me with a hopeful expression to which I couldn't say no.
"I would love to." I followed her out the main door, and down a hall filled with portraits of what looked like rulers of the past.
"This is our memorial wall. This i where I spend most of my time when new problems arise. I'll stand here and think and ask myself what would they do." Iolande explained.
"I used to engage in a similar practice on my home planet. On Earth, we celebrate a holiday known as the Day of the Dead, where we honor and remember our loved ones who have passed away. This holiday is not about focusing on the fact that they are no longer with us, but rather about celebrating and cherishing the memories and experiences we shared with them. We believe that when we forget those who have passed, we miss out on important opportunities to learn from them and grow as individuals. That's why we make a special effort to honor and remember our loved ones, even after they're gone." Iolande smiled at me and asked,
"Is there anyone you specifically celebrate?"
"Yes, my Mother……She died when I was younger due to my father" Iolande looked heartbroken, she pulled me towards the last painting with a sheet over it, on the wall. "I was hoping to save this for later. But I think it's best to show you now." As she pulled down the sheets, my gaze was immediately drawn to the portrait hanging on the wall. In the painting, I saw a woman dressed in a stunning dark blue gown adorned with gold feathers on her shoulders. A golden crown rested elegantly on her head, and her long black hair cascaded down her back in soft waves. However, my attention was quickly shifted to the baby the woman was holding in a white blanket. As I looked closer, I realized that the woman in the portrait was, in fact, my mother. The image captured her beauty and grace, and it was a moment of reflection and admiration for her.
I backed away from Iolande and the picture. "Why do you have a painting of my mother?"
As she approached the painting, she spoke in a soft tone, "The reason why our mother had to leave was that she was betrothed to my father, but unfortunately, she did not love him. Instead, she fell in love with the Red Lantern Warlord, Atrocitus. She ran away with him from Batrassus, where they both lived for about ten years. Our mother felt liberated when she left with Atrocitus. She changed her name to Vanessa Miller and became known as the queen of thieves. Finally, she felt free to be herself with Atrocitus by her side. However, my father found her and threatened to kill Atrocitus if she did not return with him. Our mother chose to save Atrocitus, so she left with my father and married him when they came back to Batrassus. My father wanted a child to continue his legacy, but my mother was already pregnant with you at that time."
I was taken aback by this revelation and listened intently.
My sister continued, "My father had already consummated the marriage with our mother, so when she found out about you, she told him that you were his child. After you were born, our mother had to inject you with his blood to change your appearance to match his. However, our father eventually found out about this, after our mother had already given birth to me and Ragnar. He banished both you and Mother from Batrassus since he had already had heirs. I assume over time, you eventually made it to Earth." I looked down in shock. All this time my life has been a lie. The man I thought was my father wasn't my father. My mind raced back to the second time I met Razer. "The only reason I won't kill you, girl, is because my lord atrocious demands that I keep you alive since you are far too precious to him." Did Razer know this whole time? If she knew, why didn't they come for me?
"If you knew all of this. Why didn't you come to find us? Why did you let me go?"
"Because he made you and Mother forget about us. and it was best to keep it that way." Iolande spoke calmly.
"WHAT?!" I looked at her as the world around me turned red. "How could anything be better than knowing about YOUR FAMILY? I suffered for years with a vile, vicious, and cruel man. I was forced to live with the man who later killed our mother. AND YOU think it was best FOR ME to STAY AWAY!?"
"You wouldn't have remembered anything. Besides Mother had a bounty on her head for the the crimes she committed. if we brought her here she would have been executed, you along with her because of association." Iolande tried reasoning
"You're the queen. Are you telling me you can't change laws?" Iolande looked at the ground in sadness. "Some queen you are. My mother was one of your people, and you failed to protect her." With hot tears spilling down my face, I flew away.
After making it to the interceptor, I rushed to my room and quickly locked the door. My heart was pounding in my chest, and my mind was racing with a million thoughts. The weight of the situation hit me like a ton of bricks, and I fell to the floor in tears. My sobs were uncontrollable, and it felt like my lungs were collapsing with each breath I took. Tears streamed down my face, and I couldn't seem to stop crying.
As I lay there on the floor, I was unable to move, and my body felt heavy as if anchored to the ground. I continued to cry, and the tears poured down my face. My room glowed a deep red. I looked up and saw a Red glowing Crystal floating towards me.
As I stood there in darkness, the crystal casing began to glow with a pulsating red light. Suddenly, a voice boomed out from it, filling the void with an ominous presence. "Rory of Earth," it said, "there is great rage in your heart, my child." I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as the crystal circled me, its glow intensifying with each passing moment.
"You belong with the Red Lantern Corps," the voice continued, its tone dripping with malice. "Join me, daughter. Fulfill your destiny and make others scream your name as you take your revenge." The words echoed in my mind, tempting me with promises of power and vengeance. It was a dangerous offer, but I couldn't deny the thrill that coursed through my veins at the thought of joining such a fearsome group.
I held out my hand, watching intently as the crystal slowly moved towards me. As it made contact with my stomach and connected with my green lantern crystal, I felt a sharp pain surge through my body. The world around me suddenly turned a deep shade of red, and I knew that the transformation was beginning.
The pain was almost unbearable, and I couldn't help but scream out in agony as the crystal bound itself to me. The sound echoed throughout the room, bouncing off the walls and filling the space with my cries. But as the transformation progressed, I slowly began to calm down.
Finally, the pain subsided, and I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. I looked down at my body, amazed at the changes that had taken place. My skin glowed with an otherworldly red light, and I knew that I was now a completely different person. It was a strange, yet exhilarating feeling, and I couldn't wait to see what the future held for me.
Bang Bang Bang "RORY!!!" As I heard the voice, I immediately turned towards the door, but I couldn't find who it was. I was confused and a little scared. Suddenly, the door busted open, and Razer came tumbling in. He looked at me in shock, and I could see the surprise written all over his face once he saw my new transformation. I slowly walked towards him, and as I moved, my hair and train/skirt floated as if the wind was moving it.
"Hello, Razer," I said in a deep, rumbling voice, which felt like my true self.
"What happened to you?" he asked, looking at me with concern as he took careful steps towards me.
"I found out the truth that so many people held from me," I replied, my voice echoing in the room. I could feel the weight of my words as I spoke them. The truth had changed everything, and I knew that my life would never be the same again. "Did you know who I truly was?….. Did you know atrocious was my father?"
"No. All we were told was not to hurt you." He got close enough and grabbed my arms, "Rory this isn't you. I understand your pain. I understand your rage and revenge. And while I may not know what causes this, I know that this isn't you."
"ohh you're wrong. This is me."
"No, it's not. The Rory I know is filled with hope and the will to do good. The will to help. The Rory I know, sees the good in people even when everyone else sees evil." He looks deep into my cold eyes, "This isn't the woman I have come to admire, and maybe even adore." As he utters his small confession, I feel a sudden release from the vengeance that had been coursing through my mind. My eyes are fixed on him, and I can feel the tears welling up inside me, threatening to spill over and betray my emotions. Despite my initial anger and frustration, his confession has given me a sense of clarity and understanding, and for a brief moment, I feel a sense of peace wash over me. "Let it go, Rory. Come back to us….. Come back to me."
With a sudden burst of determination, I managed to break free from the tight grip of my captor, and I let out a deep gasp of relief and exhaustion. My chest heaves as I struggle to catch my breath and regain my composure. The release of tension and adrenaline causes my body to lose its balance, and I stumble forward, my legs feeling weak and unsteady. Just as I think I'm about to hit the ground, Razer appears out of nowhere and catches me, his strong arms wrapping around me and supporting my weight.
As I slowly start to regain my senses, I feel the cool breeze on my skin and the warmth of Razer's embrace. I glance down at my suit, which had just moments ago been a powerful shield against my enemies, and watch as it fades away into nothingness, replaced by my green Lantern suit. I turn to Razer, and I see the concern in his eyes, but I also see the love and protection that he offers me. As my mind clears, I take a deep breath and gather my thoughts, feeling ready to face whatever challenges come my way.
"Thank you, Razer," I whisper, my voice barely above a whisper as I reach up and softly place my hand on his cheek. He nuzzles into my touch, and I can feel his warmth and his strength. We lay there for a short time, with me still in his arms, and my mind starts to race as I think about the two crystals that I carry with me and what they might mean for my future. Despite the uncertainty ahead, I feel safe and protected with Razer by my side. Gradually, everything in my surroundings dissolves into darkness while I become completely limp in the embrace of Razer.
As I slowly awaken, a sense of uncertainty weighs heavily on me. My eyes focus on the familiar surroundings of my bedroom, as I realize that I am lying in my bed, covered with a soft blanket. I sit up, feeling a sense of dizziness, and pull the blanket off me. I look at myself and see that I'm wearing my white button-up with my black sweater over it, my green plaid skater skirt, nylons, and black knee-high heeled boots that I had on before I left Earth. As I plant my feet on the ground and try to stand up, my legs feel like jelly, making it difficult to maintain my balance. Despite the challenge, I make my way towards the door, keeping my hand on the wall to steady myself. The sound of my heels echoes through the hallway as I walk towards the dining room, my heart racing with anticipation of what's ahead.
The door opens, showing Aya in her original ball-like form from the ceiling and Razer in the middle of the room on what looks like a call with Hal. "The ship is primed and ready to leave. Why aren't you back here with the Lantern we tracked?"
"He's gone missing."
"I can easily find him."
"No. You can't just go around in that red lantern and get up. We got enough on our hands without you starting a panic."
"My talents are wasted waiting here."
"Stay with Aya and Rory, have Rory run a scan for Dulac's power ring." The call ended like that. I walked further in and put my hand on razers shoulder as I saw he was distressed as well as about to blow a fuse. He looks at me with concern. Mostly likely about what happened last night. Aya interrupts us with an announcement.
"Sensors have located a weak energy trail. It is possible Green Lantern Dolacs ring. The energy trail is too distant to make that determination with total confidence."
"So you're saying we need to be closer?" Razer asks her and looks at me for confirmation.
"It would aid us, but we were ordered to remain on the ship," I say as I watch him walk to the elevator.
"I was ordered to help you trace the power ring, which is exactly what we'll be doing if you put yourself together and come with me." He corrected me with a smirk. I smirked back as I summoned my green and red joined crystals and let my green lantern suit materialize on my body.
"Any red on me?" I ask as I stand next to him in the elevator.
"you look fine."
"you also look fine" As I smirk at him, the comment I make seems to go over his head. We stepped out of the ship and made our way towards the energy trail that we were following. Upon landing, we find ourselves in what looks like ancient catacombs and start walking deeper inside. I open up my hand and use my crystal energy to bring up the location that Aya had sent me. Razer walks in front of me, using his ring as a makeshift flashlight. As we move further into the structure, we reach a hallway that leads to the outside. I'm lost in my thoughts, paying more attention to the map than my surroundings, when Razer suddenly pulls me towards a dark alcove. Before I can react, he falls on top of me, leaving me a bit flustered.
As we stayed hidden in the alcove, guards walked past us with their heavy boots thudding on the stone floor. I turned to look at Razer and found his face just inches away from mine. His body was pressed against mine, and I could feel the warmth emanating from him. A blush crept up my cheeks as I tried to regain my composure. But before I could stand up, Razer had already pulled me up with him. The sudden movement caused me to stumble, and I fell against his chest. In a swift motion, Razer wrapped his arm around my waist to steady me, all the while holding my hand tightly with his other hand.
As we walked down the path, I couldn't help but notice Razer's toned physique. Despite my best efforts to remain composed, my face flushed with embarrassment as I blurted out, "Nice abs." Razer flashed me a grin and replied, "Nice waist." I giggled in response, feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Suddenly, Razer playfully nudged me, causing me to stumble. As I turned around to face him, my cheeks still burning, he flashed me a mischievous smirk before walking ahead of me.
We kept walking towards a dead end. "The signals seem to be getting stronger, but it seems our search is over."
"Not quiet." As I turn towards Razer, I catch a glimpse of his swift and powerful movements as he slashes the wall next to us. The wall crumbles down, revealing a crypt with a large coffin placed in the center of the room. We exchange a glance before stepping inside the crypt. As I walk towards the coffin, I search for any indication that could help me identify the person inside it. Razer strides towards the coffin and pushes the heavy lid off, revealing the lifeless body of Duloc. I raise my hand and a green mist emanates from it, as I scan Duloc's body for any clues about his death.
"Odd. There doesn't seem to be injuries indicating a struggle." I inform Razer.
"So, he didn't go down fighting." Razer crouched down and looked further at Dulac's hands. "Strange. His ring is gone. Has it gone back to OA?"
"Aya would have informed us if anything else had changed." Razer stood up and looked at me.
"It's time to inform the others."
We met up with Hal and Kilowog in a dark alleyway.
"Great job at obeying orders. Do I need to write them down from now on?" Hal askes
"A warrior acts," Razer speaks up.
"A warrior listens to his superiors." Kilowog interrupts. I turn to him in anger.
"I am one of his superiors. Or does my status mean nothing?" I challenge Kilowag
"enough. What have you found?" Hal asks.
"We found his body in the catacombs. We're still trying to locate his power ring." Razer informs
"if it hasn't chosen a new bearer already," Kilowog interjects
"Ayas sensors indicate that the ring is somewhere within the castle walls." I point out.
"my gut instinct tells me so is the killer." Hal looks at me and nods
"Then let's find this bastard, and bring him to justice."
"we will but we have to do it carefully. We'll need proof. You two go back to the interceptor, well call if we need backup. But we might have to make a quick exit. Kilowog and I have a trap to set." Hal and Kilowg flew towards the palace while I and Razer flew towards the interceptor.
As we flew away from the city, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. The continuous hustle and bustle had started to take a toll on me, and I was grateful for the change of scenery. Just as I was starting to enjoy the serene landscape, Razer grabbed my hand and pulled me toward a field of flowers. The vibrant colors and sweet aroma of the flowers immediately caught my attention, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me. As we continued walking hand in hand, we approached a small pond that was overflowing with life. The gentle sound of the water and the sight of the fish swimming around was a welcome change from the chaos of the city.
As we settled in front of the pond, I dipped my index finger into the water and moved it around in a slow, circular motion. I watched in fascination as the fish living in the pond followed the movement of my finger, their sleek bodies gracefully slicing through the water. The view was so serene and peaceful moment, surrounded by the gentle sounds of nature.
"What did you mean about the truth so many people held from you?" Razer asked me, making me look at him. His eyes were filled with curiosity and concern. I looked away and stared at the flowers around us. I recall the conversation Iolande and I had. I bring my knees to my chest and breathe slowly.
"After the celebration, Iolande pulled me aside to talk. She led me to a hallway that had portraits of the past rulers of Batrasis. I learned that the late queen was my mother. She was betrothed to the king, but after they married, she ran away and joined the Red Lanterns. She fell in love with Atrocitus and had me. Later, she was taken back home, where she injected me with the king's blood, changing my appearance to match his. A few years passed, and she gave birth to Iolande and Ragnar. Eventually, it was revealed who my real father was, and both my mother and I were banished. My mother made me forget my entire life here, and the worst part is that my so-called siblings didn't even bother to try and find us." I looked at the ground with tears in my eyes. I didn't have the energy to look at Razer; all I could think about were the lies I was forced to live with.
I felt an arm wrap around me and pull me towards a chest. I looked up and saw Razor kneeling next to me and hugging me. All I could do was bury my head in his chest as I hugged him back and sobbed. I felt a hand smoothing down my hair as another was rubbing my back. I felt safe in his arms, even though I shouldn't. My emotions were swirling around like a hurricane trapped in a bottle. Razor's ring went off as my gem glowed brighter. I pulled away and wiped my tears while watching Razor answer the call. Hal's face showed through the projection.
"Razor head back to the ship and prep it to take off, Rory meet us at the castle. Me and Kilowag have a plan." The call ends immediately. I look at Razor for his reaction but he's already standing up.
"Please don't tell the others about me now having two gems. I am not fully ready, nor do I understand what to do next." I implore Razor, and he looks at me and nods before taking off back to the ship. I watch as he flies back to the ship. Gazing back at the water, I observe the fish continuing to dance with each other. I release a heavy breath before standing up and flying back to the palace.
The skies have gone dark as I sit next to Kilowog in the royal observing box above the arena. The crowd around us is roaring as the match is about to start. I look around and see islanders watching me, I turn away and see Cothack and Hal coming out of the respective doors. They move closer towards us as Ragnar comes back with three cups of Ale. "And here another flagon of that ale you so enjoyed before." Ragnar hand the cup to kilowag.
"Hey, you remembered the slime." Kilowag takes the cup and mockingly cheers and starts drinking. I politely decline the cup Ragnar made for me as I turn back to the contestants.
"Iolande, Prepare to wed as soon as I defeat this peasant," Cothack says to her as he looks at Hal with disgust.
"Know your place Cothack"
"Queen Iolande, I fight so that your people might have the capable, honest ruler they deserve." I scoff at Hal's words. Hal and Cothack circle around each other before moving to their respective sides. Iolande walks to the front of the box and raises a blue flag, before dropping it after a few seconds.
Cothack and Hal charge at each other with spears, and they both hit each other, knocking them off balance a little.
"Kep your chin up Jordan! Focus!" Kilowog hollers as he drinks more of his ale. I pay attention to how Ragnar is staring intently at Kilowog, almost like he is waiting for something. I quickly look back at the fight when Hal's scooter erupts in flames. They circle around each other, mallets drawn and shields in place, before Cothack striks Hal's shield, Hal pushes against his attack but Cothack kicks Hal's stomach making him fall. Hal rolls out of the way just in time to miss Cothacks mace hitting the ground.
"Come on Jordan" Kilowag exclaims, as he takes another sip of his ale. He starts couching and holding his neck as he chocks on his beverage. I quickly stand up and try to help him but it's too late, he falls to the ground……dead. "Nooooooooo" I scream and kneel next to him, i grab his cup and sniff before recoiling away. "Poison, he's been murdered." I place Kilowog head on my lap as tears stream down my face. Hal rushes to us, kneeling on the ground. "Kilowog, come on buddy, speak to me please" his voice filled with desperation and doubt. I look at him and try to keep my voice steady "Hal, he's gone" Hal's head bows down as he looks at the poisoned cup "No. Whoever did, this will pay" "The death of the outsider is inconsequential.' Cothack announces as he flies to the booth on a new scooter, "I demand my challenger return to the field. So that I may defeat him and become the rightful king of Betrassus!" I stare at him in disbelief and anger just as Kilowog's ring starts to glow.
"Look. The ring!" Ragnar points out as he moves closer to his sister. The removes itself from Kilowog, floating in the air, it moves past me and Hal, towards Iolande. She grasps her necklace causing both Hal and i look at each other confirming our theory. The ring moves and accepts Ragnar as the new ringer bearer.
"Finally, it's mine. The power I dreamed of!" Ragnar stares at the ring in amazement. "Again. I protest this delay." "Your silly contest no longer matters Cothack. What matters now is that I'm a Green Lantern. The most powerful citizen of betrassus. I shall be your ruler. Bow down and grovel to me, your new king!!" I stare at him shocked. "You did this! You murdered our friend!" Hal seethes, pointing the cup at him with clenched fists. "I had to. You told me that when a lantern dies his ring searches for the next worthy person. Knowing myself to be most worthy, I killed Dulac so that his ring might come to me." The people in the arena start booing at his words. "Do not judge me! I loved Duclac more than any of you. That's why I killed him, to honor him by being his successor!" I stand up and turn my body to him as I speak. "And Kilowog? Why him?" "Duclas ring didn't come to me. So I had to try again, I had to!" He starts circling us. "Sorry, but we can't let you get away with this" We start walking closer to him before we pause as he points his ring to us. "you don't have a choice. None of you!" the ring starts to glow before dissolving into green smoke. I take the opportunity to punch his jaw sending him to the ground. He quickly sits up and frantically searches for the ring. "No what happened to my ring? Where is it? I want my ring!!?"
"I still have it." Kilowog anodes as he stands up and moves next to us "The ring you thought chose you was a construct I made while playing dead." Hal pats him on the back. "Bravo Kilowog, excellent performance." "Aw, Gee, thanks. I thought slobbering the grab all over was a bit much but I sure as heck wasn't gonna drink any." He's sneers at Ragnar as Iolande kneels before her, our brother. "Oh Ragnar, I'm heartbroken" "Ihis is my planet. I was born to lead! Ill show you all." He grabs her and raises a sword to her her throat. Cothack steps forward. "My queen!" before stopping as Ragnar presses the Sword against her throat. Grauds start pointing their weapons at us.
"Your reign is over sister. Look at how easily I payed off your guards. If i can not rule Betrassus, then neither will you. Attack Now!!!" He back into the hallway to the booth with Iolande. The guards move closer to us, Hal holds out his hand "Kilowog my ring!" Before he get a chance to grab it the guards start attacking us, I make a construct of a whip, lasso grab two guards feet and throw them behind us and over the balcony of the booth. More guards come as Cothack joins the fight, I change the whip into a bo staff and attack. Kilowog throws hal his ring, he catches it but is pinned to the balcony before he can put it on. Ragnar flees from under the booth entrance on a scooter with Iolande, Cothack quickly see this and get on his own scooter to follow them. Kilowog put up a wall to stop more guards coming, three of them manage to get past the wall, I blast two guards coming at me but can't get to the last one as they leap at Hal and the guards holding him, caus them to go over the edge. "Nooo" I scream as Kilowog and I run to the edge and see Hal put on his ring and blast the guards off of him. He jerks his head to the direction where Cothack, Ragnar, and Iolande went. We quickly leave the arena and follow after them.
Iolande struggles against Ragnar hold, both still ahead of Cothack. The latter reaches for them, Ragnar notices and quickly jerks his scooter into the front of cothacks cause in him to spin out. He gains control and follows after them. They fly a good distance before coming to a overpass, Ragnar unsheathes his swords and cuts through a support beam causing it to fall, Cothack unfortunately didn't have enough time to stop or move out of the way causing him to hit the fallen structure and fly off his scooter luckily unharmed. We fly past him and get closer to the siblings. "Give it up Ragnar! Don't be a fool!" I exclaim as all three of us make segregate claw constructs to grab the scooter. Ragnar sharply turns left and down another streeet making out constructs his a wall, we quickly let go and turn down the same street. I can see the entrance gate, as well as hear a guard scream to close the gates. We make another claw and grab the scooters exhaust and pull back hard, The both fall off. Ragnar grabs iolande and his sword as we and the guards circle him.
"stay back! let me go, or ill kill her." He points the sword to iolande. I stare him down before looking at Iolande. "Iolande, Put the ring on now!" She opens her necklace, takes out the ring, quickly putting it on. Green swirls circle her, throwing Ragnar off of her as she glows and starts floating. he normal dress his gone, now replace with a green and black on suit with heels, green gloves, and her normal now green crown. Ragnar yells out in anger, picking up his swords, and swings it at her. She looks at him and makes her own swoards, shattering his as the attack hits. Looking shocked, she kicks him down and points her sword at him. "Please! I beg for quarter!" She looks at him as she the green glow fades away. I look at Hal satisfied knowing we were right.
We stand in the arena the next day as Ragnar sit on the ground in cuffs, surrounded by Iolandes loyal gaurds. Iolande walks towards us still in her Green Lantern suit. "The true enemy is defeated. We thank our green lantern friends for bringing him to justice." She look at us with a smile before sneering at Ragnar. "Gaurds round up the traitors and take my brother to the tower." The gaurds grab Ragnar under his shoulder and drag him away as he screams at us "You'll all be sorry! One day i will be a Lantern, and then you'll pay! You'll all pay!" I look at him with anger before turn back to Iolande as Cothack walks to her. "You wil be-nay. You are a great leader." He place his fist against his cheats and kneeels before her "You are my Queen, you are my Sovereign. And I pledge all my loyalty."
"Better late than never" Hal comments as the other guards kneel
"Our Queen and Sovereign!" We kneel and bow with them.
I stand on a walkway hours later look at the sunset, thinking about what has happened and what I said to Iolande the night before. I now understand why she didn't come for us, not only because of their father, but also because of her resposabilities as Queen. I never should have lashed out. I hear heels clicking behind me, I look over my shoulder and see Iolande, I turn to her and walk towards her. "Iolande…… what i said that night..was not fair to you. I was overwhelmed with learning the truth, and remember the pain my mother went through, but I shouldn't have taken it out on you. I'm sorry"
"Thank you, but what you said as not wrong. We should have tried to find you after I become Queen. Not because of our mother, but because of you. You deserved to know the truth and have a chance to be with your people. I know now that the decision i made was the wrong one and I hope that you can forgive me." I look a her shocked and also warmly as i smile. I walks towards her and hug her.
"Of course" She hugs me back before pulling away.
"As I'm sure you realized, I can't come with you to fight the red lanterns, no matter how much I wish I could. I am more than a Green lantern to my people, I am their Queen, and duty to them comes first. But please know, the Betrassus will always welcome you and any alies of your's with open arms."
"Thank you Iolande, and if you ever need us, don't hesitate to call" She nods. "Good bye little sister" I give her a smile before flying back to the interceptor filled with relief and happiness.
