I’m obsessed with designing our new Glory Armour line now that we have Kevlar in the sewing room and I found some drop dead gorgeous silk jacquard fabrics in red and gold. It will protect the wearer from fire, flying glass, low velocity bullets or slash attacks. Scales To Go Before I Sleep— Bearded dragon in progress. Don’t know if it was the brightest idea we ever had to make this appliqué in foiled leather, but I love the way it looks. It took weeks to find a dyer who could create just the right light green to pass the boss’ inspection, and she turns out to be right here in TX. Thanks, Julie Mayfield!

Space punk??

I love the Steampunk vibe but isn’t it more of a costume than a style you can wear to work (with the obvious exception of Prada’s glorious interpretation of Steampunk for banksters)?

I think I will add jumpsuits to our line of menswear: something sleek, wrapped, and in black. It will have to let a man move like a cat when he needs to and slouch in style when he wants. Space punk, anyone?

Back in the day, a fashion collection lookbook was just a great set of photos that showcased the theme of your collection. If your photographer had even basic skills you could be confident that it would turn out OK. Today those lookbooks are videos, which of course means that you have to think about telling a story not just with visuals but also through movement and music and words. The whole lookbook thing is now a thousand times more complex (and expensive), but just look at what you can accomplish through this new medium: here is one of my favorites from the jewelry designers at Icarus.

Leather or Ultraleather?

So what do you guys think? Do you prefer real leather, which can be dyed, or Ultraleather, which is man-made? Ethical considerations? Natural vs petroleum products? I am dying to get started on a leather or "leather" metallic and black jacket and laptop case to match, but which to choose?

Yay! We finally got the MemeCoats store open on Etsy.com! Next we will finish the gallery website and store. Our customers can order a handmade coat of their dreams, like this Phoenix coat. You know, when the boss first requested this design I had SERIOUS doubts; a red Phoenix on a hand-dyed red fire wool? "Too little contrast" I squeaked! "The front is too plain!" I grumbled and fussed, but when I finished it, we had both fallen in love with the coat. Phoenix Rising: check it out! Hope you like it, too. I added just a touch of bling (Swarovski crystal cinders) for the bad boys. Hmmm, maybe the boss isn't completely crazy after all...

Let's Get Rid of Lapels!

I am SO over lapels on men’s coats! I am sick of those little pad-stitched wings that serve no earthly purpose beyond offering a place for politicians to stick a patriotic pin or grooms to hang a flower. What is the deal with lapels? Can we move on, people? It’s been like, centuries since men have been stuck with them! There is no reason that men can’t have as many style choices and color options as women in their outerwear. I won’t say that I will never use a lapel again in a design, but I am definitely going to make certain that my male clients have a lot of options that are fun, colorful, and don’t have LAPELS!

Steam punk Love

So I finally found just the right steam punk materials for my next coat design. The boss insisted that I use a chocolate brown light weight wool suiting and a gold silk lining with a clock design, so I went steam punk crazy and decided to wrap a skeleton watch appliqué around the coat in an asymmetrical pattern. I also talked him into approving the purchase of a whole bag of gold bouillion appliqué. Can't wait to get started on this one.

To Punk or Not to Punk? That is the question. I am in love with the Steampunk meme: gears and locks, leather and velvet, damask embroidery and wool in a Victorian silhouette. what could be a more fascinating challenge for a designer? The problem is how to preserve the meme but keep it wearable. Stay tuned for the solutions!

Epic Fail: Reboot

Well I guess the garden coat wasn't meant to be. First the boss-man nixed the large flower motif and limited me to aqua and raspberry, and after hours of hand sewing self-fabric buttonholes the old fashioned couture way, I noticed that the purple hand-dyed flowers had crocked all over the white wool! All attempts to clean the wool ended in an epic fail and the coat, minus the fifty Swarovski embellished flowers, hit the trash can. Reboot!!
