Introduction: Hello! My name is Yunsun Eoh and I went to the University of Southern California as a biological sciences major! I graduated in the class of 2023 and I am now working as a medical assistant at a OB GYN clinic and as a full-time lab technician in a genetics lab. In my free time, you can catch me solving murder mysteries and escape rooms or watching a movie while finishing a puzzle. I also love to cook a home-cooked Korean meal for my family and friends to enjoy!

What kind of advice would you be giving? I can help people who are on the fence about pursuing an MD/PhD vs. MD or are interested in getting into research as an undergraduate! I also can help you find volunteer or job opportunities in the LA area. I am currently applying to MD/PhD programs, so I can give advice/rant about the process!

Best piece of advice you've received? You must run your own race. As much as it is easy to compare yourself to others, pretend you are a horse in a horse race and only look forward!

Celine Galliguez (she/her) - UCI '18

Career Goal: Bioprocess Manufacturing Technician (at Genentech for 2 years, now currently at BioMarin in the Gene Therapy Downstream Department)

Introduction: Hi there! My name is Celine Galliguez. I was in the UCI chapter of MEMO from 2015-2018, then I was on the Non-Profit BOD from 2018-2019. I was an intern during my third year, and I was the Webtech-Historian on board during my fourth year. On Non-Profit, I was the Service Coordinator, but I also worked closely with the two Executive Directors, and was pretty much their VP, since we were good friends. I also went on 12G and 13G. While I was at UCI, I majored in Biological Sciences and entered thinking I would become a doctor (like most of us do) but found out it wasn’t for me, my grades weren’t the best either by the end of second year, so I transitioned to being pre-dental. I was studying for the DAT and working as a dental assistant during my post-grad year, but right before I was supposed to take the exam, I realized I was in it for the wrong reasons (money lol). It took me quite a bit longer to get to where I am now, in the Biotech industry, but I love my career and how I got here, and I still earn quite a good amount of money without being a doctor lol. My dream is to one day pursue a masters and career in music as a sound engineer/song master/composer. I’m just working hard now to save all that nice biotech money. Sound equipment is expensive! What kind of advice would you be giving? You DO NOT have to have your life figured out, especially at your young age! I know the filial piety is intense, but make sure you enjoy your college days! You may not get the chance to be in this special environment again. Yes, grades may be important for grad school, but it is also important to learn how to treat people! You never know who will be your boss in the future! I had a whole plan of my life, and how I thought I wanted it to turn out. Trust me, my life is nowhere near that but I am so happy and I love my life :)

Rojina Pad (she/her) - UCI '22

Introduction: Hello y'all! My name is Rojina Pad and I'm a pre-med currently taking a couple of gap years to prepare for medical school application. One of my favorite experiences so far throughout my pre-med journey has been participating in the COPE Health Scholar program at the Hoag Hospital. It has truly been a rewarding and inspiring experience while rotating in a variety of departments from oncology to cardiovascular catheterization. This program has allowed me to make friends with not only other fellow Health Scholars, but also the medical team and actually learn so much about each specialty. In this regard, one of my hobbies, especially during downtime, is to chat with patients, family members, or the medical team who are sometimes very funny!

Involvements: MEMOber since winter 2022, Research on Alzheimer's Disease and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), UROP and Excellence in Research, COPE Health Scholar, Transfer in Bio Sci (TBS) club, and Transfer EDGE and STEM mentor.

Extracurriculars: MEMO, of course!! MEMO was introduced to me by one of my good friends in my research lab, and then ever since I joined this club I could never stop loving it, enjoying every meeting, and learning it especially when they brought guest speakers (physicians, trainers from the army, med students, etc.). I'm so thankful for MEMO and I hope I can continue participating as much as possible.

What kind of advice would you be giving? Enjoy your undergrad years and don't be afraid of going into the crowd and meeting new people. Who knows, maybe you meet MEMO and so a new wonderful journey starts :)

I have realized that allowing yourself to be flexible and fluid, like water, will help you be more open-minded, at ease, mindful, and more open to enjoying the present. Hence, nothing can block and cause any tension in you, even the hardest rocks.

Nicole Talaba (she/her) - UCSD '22

Introduction: Hi I’m Nicole. My gender pronouns are she/her. Nice to meet yall! I’m from OC and I graduated from UCSD in 2022, then worked as a lab tech there for a year. I am now a first year genetic counseling student at UT Health Houston MD Anderson, so I am missing my California weather. When I have free time, I love going to boba/coffee stores to catch up on work, because seeing other people work motivates me to stay off of TikTok. Cooking and watching tv shows is my self care too. I also propagate plants (RIP to the ones I had to sell before I moved). If you ask anyone in UCSD MEMO, my super-skill is reversing into parking spots--without a camera. On a concluding note, I understand how stressful it is to figure out what you want to do and then trekking through said journey itself. I really do like talking to people about all things pre-health, so I am always happy to chat about anything :)

What kind of advice would you be giving?

Application Advice: This was the hardest part of applying to medical school personally. You cannot procrastinate on this as you need to write countless essays especially if you are applying to 30+ schools. Write your essays early and submit them early.

School Advice: If you are hesitant to try something or not, I recommend trying it out and keeping open-minded. Especially if you are unsure about the career path or specialties. I found my passion in neuroscience and psychiatry in the most unexpected time and place.

General Advice: Everyone has a different pace. Don't be discouraged by how much others have done. Set a clear and realistic goal for yourself. The only person you are competing against is yourself.

Best piece of advice you've received? Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

Kristy Le (she/her) - UCSD '22

Introduction: Hi you! If I've caught your eye, some things about me are that I'm pretty extroverted, hardworking, genuine, and down-to-earth hehe (´꒳`)

My hobbies nowadays tend to be exploring cafes and cities, doing spontaneous photoshoots, watching movies or anime in movie theatres (AMC stubs membership >:D), and indulging in deep talks !! 🌱

Involvements: There were a couple of jobs and involvements I had during undergrad, but to gear it towards MEMO, I was MEMO Publicity Intern, Publicity Chair, and now Administrative Director! Outside of MEMO or school, I worked as a CNA and obgyn MA! …and a handful of fun side jobs like bobarista and tutor haha

Extracurriculars: During my undergraduate years, I put myself out there to explore lots of the different orgs offered at UCSD. I joined VSA, MASA (multi-asian student association), MEMO, KASA, and I was interested in joining the campus tennis and dancing teams. While I ended up being mostly active in VSA, MASA, and MEMO, I thoroughly enjoyed my time having been in all those undergrad organizations that I peeked my head in. I met so many people, was inspired by so many, and learned lots about myself along the way! Even if you're trying to focus on doing what's best for your academic or career life, you have to remember to live for yourself as well and do the hobbies or things you've always wanted to try during undergrad college! Only then will most of those opportunities be most free anyways HAHA

What kind of advice would you be giving? If you truly think there's a field you're interested in, whether that be pre-med, pre-PA, pre-nursing, or a specific specialty you think you're passionate about, you should always aim to put yourself in that setting. For example, I always knew I loved kids and babies, so I went and volunteered at a NICU department at Jacob's Medical Center Hospital in La Jolla. Little did I know, it was way more boring than I imagined. Yes I got to be around newborn babies each volunteering shift, but most of the time, they were already asleep as they were supposed to be, and I found myself walking around, counting down the hours and minutes until my shift would be over because everything was already stocked, and nurses were mostly sitting in their chairs doing their laptop work for the babies. After that experience, I learned that NICU wasn't all I thought it would be for me, and now, I think I'm more interested in labor & delivery or pediatrics. For me, I learned that I want to be more on my feet while not going through too much running around, so here I am working at an OBGYN clinic. To sum up my advice, make sure you truly understand what you would be experiencing when you say you want to go into a certain field or specialty. It may not be as you imagine sometimes, and there's other factors to consider when you're in such positions too! (like how much free/family time, lunch breaks, patient care, etc).

Best piece of advice you've received? Take a gap year or two. If you are like how I used to be -- academically determined -- then this may be advice that you may or may not think about, but I truly appreciate my gap years. It's the only time you get to find yourself. Whether you improve yourself for your resume before applying to graduate schools or just discover what hobbies or routines you now develop, taking a gap year will be the break you DESERVE. No one's truly rushing you to finish your education, except yourself. Go travel. Go retake those classes. Go work part-time at that one cafe or place you've always loved. Use your gap year(s) to brace yourself and put together why you are passionate for the graduate school(s) you wish to attend.

Introduction: Hello everyone! My name is Jenny (she/her) and I graduated from UCSD c/o 2022 with a B.S. in Human Biology (Global Health Minor). I was involved in MEMO throughout my four years of college, and served as Co-Executive Director during the 2022-2023 term. I am currently in my gap years gaining patient care experience and applying to PA school this cycle.

Fun fact about me is I’ve lived in San Diego my whole life, but I’ll never get tired of the beach! The Torrey Pines State Beach Hiking Trail is probably my favorite place in San Diego since it’s hiking and the beach all in one place.

Introduction: Hello everyone, my name is Sabrina. I recently finished school/clinical rotations getting my clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) license and will be working full-time at a hospital laboratory in the San Gabriel Valley! If you are unfamiliar with what a CLS does, we run patient blood tests and lots of other moderate to high-complexity lab testing. It is a lesser known career in the healthcare field that is still very rewarding and an important part of patient care. Introduction: Hiiii everyone! My name is Thu (she/hers) and I graduated from UCSD in Spring 2022. One of my favorite undergraduate extracurricular is being a T.A. (2 quarters of Cancer Biology and 1 quarter of BILD 3) and would love to share my experiences as being a T.A. My aspiration is to become a pharmacist (maybe specializing in oncology… if I still decide on residency by that time….). This career path allows me to interact & help patients directly through consultation and to be a pivotal part of their health education. This is one of the reasons I continue to be a part of MEMO, as it allows healthcare and health education more accessible to our communities. Aside from my professional life, I enjoy bullet journaling, watching kdramas, streaming EXO concert videos, playing tennis, AND trying out new/delicious food places.
