Claire’s HS^2 Chapter 9 Review

Obligatory Spoiler Warning!

I figured out how to do the keep reading thing! Hope this helps everyone avoiding spoilers!

So, this one felt short? Not a ton to say, but given how it ends, my theory that Candy is a doomed timeline feels more and more appealing. We know from the epilogues that Dave has gone with Obama (I’m remembering that right, right??) to find his ultimate self. So we, as the audience, know where he is. Kinda. But, Harry is right, its weird that no one has brought him up. He’s a the Knight of Time for goodness sakes! Dave is one of the best warriors at the team’s disposal and probably one of the most capable of retrieving poor Yiffany. I get the feeling that Candy is rather like a dream bubble. The logic of a dream is fuzzy and a dreamer’s memory is selective at best and faulty at worst. Things feel off, but in an indescrible way that seems almost uncaused. I like it! I think this is really cool! I can’t wait to see where things go from here!

Never really liked Dirk - as a person, he’s a great character, probably one of HS’s best - but I actually really like BGD. Probably because he’s just tinged with enough of Jake’s perception of Dirk to be more bareable

I need to know that Rose and Kanaya are gonna be okay. I don’t mean they need to stay together, I just want my fave lesbians to be happy. Besides, we’ve got a whole other timeline for them to reconcile in!

Unrelated, but on my mind: Vrisjade?? Very pro-Vrisjade rn. Also kinda pro Jade+Rosemary, but not super attatched to any of the above. IDK, I just think that Vriska and Jade would make a good pair!

any insight on the meaning of "magic is fucking real" / "magic is fake as shit" if it means anything ? it keeps being brought up in the comic and yet i can't make sense of it

There’s various uses for it. On one hand, it talks about the setting’s dichotomy, a mix between Fantasy and Sci-Fi. SBURB gives you RPG roles and dumps you into a fantasy land with cute animal consorts to undo spells and fight back against the evil Denizen of the Land! It gives you the Tools to magically make anything appear out of thin air! But you could also argue the high-tech of everything used invalidating the idea of Magic. Homestuck’s reality is built upon the Aspects, manipulation of these in various ways, devices capable of taking ideas and making them physical, they’re bending of these natural rules of the world and uses of highly advanced technology more than Magic, aren’t they?

At what point is it ‘Magic’ and not something else? Is Science advanced enough comparable to Magic? What do you believe when both mix and intersect? Homestuck toys with fantastic tropes and sci-fi tropes in that way, and the characters reflect this, Rose realizing the source of her Magic Power, Eridan convincing himself of the power of ‘science’ and rejecting ‘magic’ while using a wand all the same...

And then you have the Hope Aspect, which is a power quite literally stemming from Belief, and the idea that, if you just wish for something hard enough it becomes real, evoking once more the image of Magic, while also providing a comedic edge when Hope alone cannot change the raw physicality of the Game.

Really it’s a lot of Hussie dicking around with the root and source of these Cool Powers and Devices the Kids and Trolls use, and how when you get down to it, there’s not much of a difference. At least that’s my take.

kanaya is NOT the mom friend!! kanaya is the lesbian friend who always wants to go apeshit and break the rules but feels like she’ll ruin her image as the mom friend if she does so she stands as a common sense filter and helps control her friends’ impulses because she just can’t imagine being any other way even if she wants to. god

I did the Extended Zodiac quiz a while back and got Mind as my aspect. After doing some research, I figured I was probably a Maid as well. Now, I’ve just done a class quiz and, shock of shocks, got Maid!

So I guess I was right, I’m a Maid of Mind!
