Star Trek headcanon: Federation Standard isn't a single language, it's a way of speaking other languages that make it easier for universal translators to translate them.

Features of Federation Standard include minimal use of in-jokes and memes; expressing yourself primarily verbally (so the meaning can be translated) rather than through body language (which can't be); avoiding ambiguous phrasing and garden-path sentences; and not conveying meaning through features of your own language such as puns or alliteration that don't translate.

Federation children learn their own languages at home, but are taught how to use Federation Standard at school. Not every language can be spoken in Federation Standard (e.g. Tamarian) but most can.

I think possibly the funniest trait to give Dr. Leonard McCoy, the CMO on the One ship in the 'fleet which has both Vulcan and Terran crewmembers, would be red-green colorblind.
