While I didn’t join Tumblr specifically for “adult” content, this blog (like many others) became a way of viewing and sharing a wide range of imagery that explored what I liked in sex and sexuality. This covered everything from porn to male nudes and non-explicit images.
I appreciate not everyone wants to view porn on social media and images of abuse are a crime against humanity.
However, the ban conflates a range of categories into one, unfathomable amalgamation.
Banning these categories isn’t creating “A better, more positive Tumblr”: it’s censorship.
Where to start on the utterly sexist ‘female-presenting nipples’ ban?
Where to start with neo-Nazism and white supremacy posts?
Where to start with the bot infestation?
Where to start with how artists will be impacted?
And I’m probably not even scratching the surface.
I can’t decide if we’re a species currently ill at ease with itself or if the trend towards censorship is a a way for tech companies to increase their ad revenues. Sadly, I think the truth lies between both those things.
Sex, sexuality and appreciation of the human form is one part of the fabric that made Tumblr great.
I’m not even sure if this post will be seen (and it’s just gone 11:50pm) so I’ll sign off and say Tumblr: it’s been a blast but that’s all folks!
