I did not expect adulthood to be so full of new problems with my body and brain but at least I can project my problems onto halt. at least I can make it Halt's problem too. the horrors persist but they also do for him too
One thing that I love about Halt is how much of a good/positive father figure and mentor he is.
There are many times in the book where Will, Gilan, and even Horace comment or think about how safe they feel around Halt, how much they trust and respect him.
Will tells Halt everything that happened to him in Skandia even when he is convinced that Halt might be disappointed in him, he still trusts and feels safe enough with Halt to tell him everything. This is also mirrored with Gilan when he tells Will that he told Halt about all his mistakes. That Halt created a place where they felt safe enough to admit mistakes and even perceived failures is such a positive thing to have in a mentor.
halt o'carrick being vulnerable and having a breakdown 🌀 halt o'carrick crying alone by himself and then picking himself back up 🌀 halt o'carrick breaking down in front of someone and hating himself for it 🌀
told myself i would wait for s3 to actually come out to start painting stuff but couldn't resist the temptation so here's a quickish thing
Halt's biggest fear for a really long time was losing Crowley. He couldn't handle the thought of nor having Crowley in his life so he always hoped that he would die before Crowley so that he wouldn't have to go through that. Crowley hoped he would die before Halt so that he would have to go through his death, and they used to get into huge arguments about it.
There were some nights when Halt was living alone and when he was feeling especially lonely or depressed just thinking about Crowley dying would be enough to make him cry.
And then Crowley did end up dying first, he ended up winning their stupid arguments, and Halt was not handling it well. He had Pauline to help him but he still was not okay for a long time.

I didn't expect my day to start with the news that our Head Ranger, John Flanagan, has passed away. As I shared it with others, I then got to know he passed away two months ago.
Dear John, thank you for all you've done and for the world that you created. Ranger's Apprentice has meant a lot to me and helped me when I felt lost. You'll be greatly missed. Rest in peace, beloved Head Ranger🍂
(articles underneath the cut)
I love how Flanny gave Halt an established bestie instead of just letting him be a loner.
I also want to know what Wills reaction was when he found out Halt was super close and best friends with their boss
My brother is reading ranger’s apprentice for the first time 🥺🥺 oh to be him
When Halt feels any emotion but really big he will revert fully back to Hibernian and forget for a sec that no one else understands that. And when he's tired. Crowley feels differently about each time.
When he's exhausted and on the brink of collapse and only speaks in Hibernian or jiberish and just mumbles everything while half asleep, Crowley finds it both adorable and really funny.
When he's really happy and just ranting excitedly in Hibernian Crowley loves it because even though he doesn't know much of what he's saying, he's just happy to see his emo friend so happy.
When he's sad and goes Hibernian, Crowley always feels so bad and again, he doesn't know what he's saying, but his voice will just be so small and broken sounding and it breaks Crowley's heart every time. Either that, and Halt will just go non verbal and Crowley will just talk to him quietly and just ask yes or no questions that Halt can answer without talking. Or just sit with him
When he's scared and Hibernian Crowley knows it's actual genuine fear and bad and Halts either gonna go into fight mode and just start getting aggressive as a defense mechanism, or he's just gonna freeze and Crowley will get him out of there.
When he's angry and Hibernian, Crowley knows the time for fucking around is over and it's actually getting serious and actually try and solve the problem instead of teasing him for fun, before he gets a shoe thrown at him. Or if it's another person that Halts pissed at, Crowley will just just get him out of there the second he starts bringing out the Hibernian curses.
At this point Crowley can read Halt so well and Halts starting to get a bit freaked out by it
I've been wanting to do this scene for a while, and @that-one-enby-ranger-2000 suggested I do this back in my word blog. Here it is. I'm back to my old background-hating ways, because there's so much more I could have included in the picture, but I didn't want to detract from Will and Halt in the infamous Boar Scene.
Literally any Ranger: I... am... unstoppable
Duncan: raises eyebrow
Ranger: no... unstable
Ranger: snaps fingers
Ranger: that's the one
Duncan: rolls eyes up to the sky
Ranger: haha
this fanfic shit is easy
I love being in the ranger's apprentice fandom on here bc there's like 5 of us just all reblogging each other like we're sitting around the campfire drinking coffee together
ya know, every once in a while the notion comes back to me that halt literally got himself BANISHED.
because he found himself to be completely out of options. and he was so desperate to find his apprentice that he literally risked his life and his reputation to go after him.
like that whole plot is so underappreciated.
It's not even that he risked his life and reputation, that's actually the smaller part of the deal. The real tragedy is that he sacrificed his home, which he found after losing the only one he'd ever had before, and his family, the one that accepted him after he had to run away from his own to save his life. He never expected Duncan to come up with that one-year banishment, he was certain that in the best case he'd have to forfeit everything he cared for, and not even in exchange for Will's life - who at that point might have been dead or resold as a slave so many times that finding him would take years, if it even was possible. No, he was ready to give it all up for an off chance that he'd be able to save his boy, and if that's not the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, then I don't know what is.
And then. And then. He did this on the assumption that after saving Will, he'd still never see him again.
Because Will wanted to be a ranger. Will would have been a great ranger. Halt knew how much he loved the work. He wasn't going to take that away from him.
So he decides to get himself banished. He assumes this is the end of his career and his life in Araluen. He assumes he'll never be welcome there again. But he plans on getting Will, and bringing him back, and leaving him there. Maybe Gilan would take him on as an apprentice. But Halt's plan was to save his son, then never see him again
