I think the thing is, I'm thinking about "work out" solely in terms of being in a relationship LOL. Cuz for me the "we'd find each other but it wouldn't always work out" radiates the energy of two dudes assessing the state of their bromance.

I was gonna write Shaun and Ed, but then I was like "well, they choose to live together, it's not really fair to judge their relationship on the Zom-pocalypse day where tension makes them fight and then Ed dies." Meanwhile, Andy and Gary had an incident and then took 16 years not discussing it...relationship was dysfunctional already, but then it functionally ended for a decade+. I can hear the classic "oh, it didn't work out" line to describe them (along the lines of "they broke up"/"they don't talk anymore")

Genuinely you make a good point. Still, Shaun and Ed have been shown outside of Z-Day to have kind of a strained relationship; wherein Ed mooches off of Shaun and Pete and sidetracks any serious conversation about change, and Shaun lets him because he doesn't want to upset the apple cart. I'd probably use "it didn't work out" to describe Shaun and Ed too considering Ed will never be the (human) person he used to be, and Shaun is just clinging to what little is left (basic motor functions and small habits.)
