I know I’m not a huge blog with tons of people following me but please listen.
I’m an American student with two years left in my degree. I have known something was wrong with me since I was thirteen and because of that I have obsessively documented my symptoms and researched causes and things I need to bring up to a healthcare provider.
However, I cannot afford healthcare. Insurance wouldn’t cover half the diagnostic testing I need. Over the past year, my health has become significantly worse and I finally went to the accessibility office on campus for help. I brought them years of documentation, photographic evidence and hundreds of pages detailing a daily lived experience and clearly highlighting functional limitations, which is what the ADA asks for- this law that universities follow doesn’t explicitly ask for a written diagnosis.
MY UNIVERSITY IS CHOOSING TO VIOLATE A FEDERAL LAW. They are actively doing it to me and they have done it to other students in the past. I have proof. I’m getting ready to tell my local news station.
If I could afford a diagnosis, I’d have gone a long time ago, and I can’t simply switch schools, this is the only historic preservation program in the state and I can’t afford out of state tuition. I want to finish this degree and I’m trying to focus on saving the money to attend grad school in Germany and never come back here.
But to do that, I need help. There are two things I can do with this fundraiser and I haven’t fully decided which. The $40000 goal is the average cost added up of all the tests I’ll likely need without insurance, since they don’t cover what I need. I can either use it to pay for those medical costs myself or I can use it to hire a lawyer to sue my university and force it to pay for the slip of paper that they so desperately want.
And I know the economy is bad and I know it gets exhausting seeing people ask for help and money, so I’m going to ask that if you can’t donate, reblog this or share it to other social media sites.
