Seto rose from the water, eyes locked on her own as he still gripped tightly to her wrist. In all his time surveying this coast he'd yet to meet a human with any significant ability- it seemed that would change with her. Not only did she have the power to control the sea but she could resist his strength with ease.
He listened as she spoke, her words nothing more than gibberish in his ears before responding- a warning spoken in his native tongue coming out as little more than rhythmic clicking.
Seto's head rose at the sound of the door, his bleary eyes lagging behind as he moved to meet the human that approached. With bared teeth he dug his claws into the floor and pulled himself toward the new entry. He had only just managed to escape a worse fate, he refused to die pathetically to the likes of man.
His elbows trembled at the strain of his weight, his fight against the push and pull of the storm leaving him winded still. His song came out nothing more than a hiss, cut apart as he finally drew closer. He came to a pause, details of the stranger's all too familiar face cause for concern.
He swayed as he tried to process the site in front of him the world spinning as more of his blood pooled over the floor beneath him. Seto's elbow buckled beneath him as he lunged forward- the last of his strength left in the tide as he fought to keep his eyes open, to stay alert.
@mersetoilees —
She’s getting rather sick of being unable to understand the people around her, so she goes away from the people, out farther and farther until she’s hovering over the edge of the water, dipping a finger in and using her magic to create little whirlpools.
She doesn’t get it. All of this has been so sudden and unwelcome… she sighs softly. “I just don’t get it at all, it sounds like perfect Japanese to me,” she says aloud, huffing.
From where he rested beneath the waters, she was just as unintelligable as the rest of them- yet another human come to disturb the ebb and flow of the tide. There was something not quite right about her, however.. the way she moved the sea was unnatural and somehow familiar, it reminded him of his sister's powers..
A human that could control the tide in the same manner the princess could was unheard of.. and it was dangerous.
He crept up on her, slithering along the sandy banks, using the push and pull of the tide as his cover. He would snatch her hands if she gave him the chance, pull her under along with him and snuff her out before she could bring harm to himself and other denizens of the sea.
"Oh, Hi, Seto!" Mokuba waves to the merman from his position on the shore, the boy holding a small human artifact in his hand. It was a compass, one he was given by the sea captain who was beyond overjoyed the orphan was alive after that storm on the night he met Seto. "I wanted to give this to you as a thank you for saving me! It's called a compass!" (From Mokuba, Happy Birthday Seto!)
With a delicate hand, Seto would accept the offering. He examined the bauble, twisting it this way and that as he watched the needle inside. A smile slowly crept onto his lips as he realized what its purpose must have been- it was a novel idea to him as there had never been a need for him to question his sense of direction, but it would seem humans were different. "How does it work..?" He asked, finally pulling his gaze off of the trinket, hardly able to contain the excitement he felt as he met Mokuba's eyes.
🐟 - tuna sushi roll
Gently holding the item between his thumb and forefinger, Seto took a quick sniff of the offering. Tuna. He huffed, set the item down, and turned up his nose. "Take it back." Came his command, cold and monotonous as he avoided looking to the sender. He had long since risen above such easy, low quality prey- what an insult to receive something like this as a gift.
A birthday gift is left for Kaiba. It is a small case that is tightly sealed and tied for extra measure with a thin ribbon. Inside appeared to be mint condition cards, all monsters that Kaiba was known to want for his deck. There is no indication of who left this gift.
Kaiba spared the unexpected item a single glance before shuffling it off of his desk and into the trash. He had no desire to accept the gift of a stranger with unknown intentions- despite how much it hurt him to waste perfectly good cards. With that settled, he made a note to have Isono change the locks for his office and started his work day.
For a moment, he remained still- watching as Yugi came to pass with only the smallest of noises to acknowledge his presence. This wasn't quite what he had expected, at least not from someone who was so obviously attempting to threaten him- it was almost as if Yugi believed he was the aggressor here. Why else would he take such a tone?
He felt emboldened at that thought.
"Tsk," he clicked his tongue, craning his neck as he turned to watch Yugi leave. "Don't bother coming back." He spat in a hushed voice, "you should be more careful with the life I chose to spare."
Without so much as another glance toward the fae, Seto continued on toward the basement stairs. It had been a long night of work and worry- he had no intentions on wasting more of his energy over Yugi's sudden reappearance. While Seto felt it was unlikely he'd have much of a chance against Yugi's alleged magical powers- he had yet to see any of them for himself despite this obvious attempt at intimidation.
Yugi would make his move eventually, Seto only had to remain alert to his actions- there was no need to show his enemy the stress he'd caused.

As their eyes met, Seto froze in the doorway.
He had never been the type to turn tail and run from a challenge, even while faced with uncertain odds he wouldn't show his weakness so easily. In his own panic, he hadn't noticed Yugi's equal shock at his presence. He was far too busy trying to contain his instincts- well aware that any moves made to defend himself in his own home may not go over well with his human neighbours- regardless of how reasonable these actions would seem to him.
As Yugi prepared himself to leave Seto clicked his tongue. These mind games would get the fae nowhere, or so Seto would tell himself all the while scrutinizing every move Yugi made in his presence. In reality he would be losing sleep stressing over the fine details of their chance meetings.
His shoulders were rigid as he stood at his full height, a mere fraction of his true size, willing Yugi to think twice about approaching him to enact whatever plans he may have had. Yet for all of his posturing, he failed to realize that just behind him was the main exit to the building in which they lived.
He was... leaving?
Seto stood glued to his spot as he watched Yugi retreat- disappearing almost as suddenly as he had been noticed. He took a moment longer, still reeling from the shock. Was he being followed? He was aware that he hadn't left a good impression- his proclivity toward violence, how he had bared his fangs to Yugi without provocation, likely more than enough to leave the other feeling jaded. Yugi claimed to have magical powers, something he knew very little about and wasn't certain he could defend himself from.
He considered following- demanding an explanation for Yugi's presence, but knew that it could only serve to ruin the reputation he had with the humans he lived closest to. It wouldn't serve him any purpose to start a fight here, not while there were so many others who might bear witness to their conversation. This goading would be ignored, Yugi could make his move another day.
As his feet unstuck themselves from the floorboards he promptly turned on his heel, set to continue on his way- Yugi would not intimidate him into giving up the life he was building here.
Yet his head continued to spin. While he was certain of the fae's intentions Seto couldn't begin to imagine what he may have been planning. By the time he'd returned home early the next morning he was short circuited, hesitating at every corner- half expecting to see Yugi waiting for him there.
starter for @game-weaver
It had been sometime since Seto had first entered human society, weeks turned to months and he was finally starting to feel as though he understood their society a little better. It felt very similar to the world he had grown up in, though money was an entirely new concept to him. The coastal colony he had relied upon had a similar concept of trade, though nothing quite like the almost sadistic system that humans held themselves to.
It hadn't taken all that long to learn exactly what was expected of him if he wished to live amongst them for any amount of time- at least so long as he wished to blend in. He'd need a home, one he couldn't buy simply by pawning off a handful of pearls or oysters. In order to get that home, he'd needed a "job"- this wasn't as bizarre a concept as the idea of money had been at least. The difficulty came with accepting he was no longer above the common citizen- that he would be expected to lower himself to the same menial tasks they were subjected to in order to live.
Without an identity of his own, finding a job hadn't been easy- it helped less that any skills he could market were directly related to the one place he needed to avoid. In the end it was by no merit of his own that he was able to find employment- he found himself in an all too easy job using only his face to make his paychecks at a shady establishment in the heart of the city. It paid well and left him with ample opportunity to learn more about humanity, they even fed him- though the food they offered was nothing compared to what he was used to.
Finding new accommodations had been more difficult than expected- the same hurdles he'd been forced to jump through in order to find a job standing in his path once more. Without an identity, there were very few willing to consider his applications- his employer had been all too happy to help him in establishing himself. They'd given him documents to prove his existence, though the information on them was far from the truth.
Seto was far from aware of the implications of this help.
After weeks of consideration he settled on an apartment complex nestled deep in a residential district, a humble place that he'd nearly missed in his search. Its outer shell was worn down from the many years it had stood there exposed to the elements. An unassuming structure that seemed all too perfect to hide himself inside.
It was afternoon now, the weekend slowly rolling into view as another day came to its end. He'd have work later that evening, though he had a few hours left- more than enough time to loiter around the city as he made his way.
Stairs creaked and warbled under his weight, their warning enough encouragement to have him taking each step with care as he ascended from his basement unit, all too aware that his deceptive weight would likely be more than enough to send him through the aged wood if he acted too hastily. With a breath of relief he found himself standing at the top of the staircase- though that relief wouldn't last long.
Seto froze as his gaze lifted only to land on a familiar face- one he was not expecting to see so soon. His features pulled into an involuntary scowl silently watching as Yugi wandered into his line of sight, mind racing with his own assumptions for why the fae was present in his new home.
He didn't respond to Yugi before the other had already left his sight- he had little interest in seeking comfort or company from anyone, let alone this near perfect stranger. He scoffed at the offer he had been extended, at Yugi's all too arrogant statement- to assume he knew at all what Seto may have thought or felt in that moment.
Though he wasn't entirely wrong- rotting in this cave with nothing but his own anger for company had done something awful to his mind. His paranoia had become suffocating, shortening his patience and leaving him with little more than his own instincts to follow. He reminded himself all too much of the stories he'd been told of the beasts in the forbidden seas- a once intelligent colony that had lost themselves long before he'd ever drawn his first breath.
Their thirst for blood had lost them their sense of self- he was sure to follow this path if nothing changed.
He truly had no intentions of ever seeking Yugi out again- this interaction more than enough proof for him that there was no benefit to associating himself with this fae, but something in him told him that this would not be the last time they would meet.
Leads and protects.., these were the same words Gozaburo had used to justify his continued rule- a false claim that he would protect the people from those less civilized. Yet it had been many centuries since he himself had done anything more than demand war and tithing. Peace was never anything more than a fever dream for him.
He cared little for fae, however, and held no interest in convincing Yugi to overthrow a system he was to naïve to find the flaws in. They would never see eye to eye- there was no point in continuing this farce. "How gullible.." with a huff, he released Yugi altogether.
This creature that was afraid of the sea could not travel through it to alert anyone of his presence- humans themselves would likely never pose themselves as much of a threat. It would be unfortunate if he had to start over again somewhere new, but killing this fae seemed more trouble than it was worth. "Get out." He spat, "share my existence with anyone and you wont live to regret it."
"Why?" He hissed, Yugi's question snapping him back to the moment at hand, away from the fog that had consumed him. The war his ancestors had waged aeons ago had never truly ended, his own colony at the center of it all- breeding unrest and devastation for any who refused to bow to them- to Gozaburo.
Why wouldn't he long to destroy the powers that destroyed the home he'd never been allowed to see?
His blood began to boil as he thought back to the place he had left behind- of the man solely responsible for his suffering. His grip on Yugi tightened, his jaw clenching as he bit out his response, "Why should I-" he bit his tongue, "Why should anyone be allowed dominion over the lives of others?"
He had long since come to understand the meaning of "divine right"- subject to it's consequences, he understood better than anyone that there was no merit in the role of a ruler. No one could be free so long as the tyrannical rule of Gozaburo's elder counsel continued- Seto would be the one to tear them down. "Rulers and nobles alike provide nothing to the people they claim command over."
