I want my writing to be smart.

Here’s what I mean: I want to write something you can understand on the first go, no problem. But then, the more you think about it, the more little things you realize. Are those little things essential to grasping the plot? No, but they enhance it. Most importantly, you feel smart for pointing them out, and I feel smart for writing them.

If you pay a $10 tax each month for universal healthcare, then technically you’re paying higher taxes.

However you are also no longer paying $100+ a month for your individual healthcare.

In fact, you now get to keep $1000 more of your income each year.

We’ve been brainwashed into thinking ‘paying more taxes = having less money to spend’. There is exactly one group that loses and it is the tiny handful of very rich very greedy people who profit from the current system at your personal expense.

You are not paying for other people’s healthcare, you are paying for YOUR healthcare. Which is currently being held hostage by private companies for exorbitant ransom.

If the government provides reasonably priced healthcare, people will stop paying private companies 10x that. And that terrifies the elitists at the top.

Conservatives are afraid of AOC, and they’re attacking her with some of the very same qualities we love her for. She’s young. She’s honest and direct. She’s working for direct and immediate action on climate change.

But they’re also calling her stupid, uneducated, ignorant. It can be easy to let some of that seep into our mental image of her. To think “sure, she might not have the formal training some of these people have, but she’s still awesome!”

So I think it’s important to remember (and actively remind people) that AOC graduated cum laude from Boston University with a degree in international relations and economics. She’s far better qualified for the position she holds than many of her co-workers. Conservatives (many of whom honestly think the gold standard is an economic panacea) will try to lecture her on market issues in particular, to convince voters that she doesn’t know how finance works. Don’t let them.
