so um.. i'm reading (and mostly loving!) kintsugi, but i take issue with name xerxes being used as comic relief.

as someone who is persian and has had to deal with the west's demonisation and erasure of our history and culture for basically ever, it makes me sad that such a monumental historical figure, who is already so unjustly absent from most history classes, is reduced to a joke :(

I’m glad you took the time to write in about this, and I’m glad you’re mostly loving the story.

I’m sorry that you feel in any way like Xerxes has been used as a joke or a punchline in the fic. While I can’t say the name itself isn’t being used in a funny way, what I can say is that the comedy doesn’t stem from a belittling of the figure himself, or at least that’s not how I see it. In fact, it’s a bit the opposite.

I see the comedy of naming Colin after Xerxes as stemming from how mismatched it is to give a name that holds such power and is so important to a sort of unassuming boy with no great political or kingly ambitions. It’s not a joke about Xerxes himself, but about what a bad fit that name is on Colin.

Still, I of course never want to cause offense, and I hope you can enjoy the story despite the name being used (but I of course understand if you can’t get past it, as well; you always need to take care of yourself first). I’m glad you brought this to my, and our collective, attention, so we can all get some greater understanding of how issues of cultural sensitivity—or lack thereof, even unintentionally—can affect someone’s enjoyment of our work.
