The course offers designers, engineers and managers the opportunity to learn methods and strategies to maximise the benefits offered by Additive Manufacturing.
In order to dramatically reduce time to market, internal combustion engine developer Lumenium LLC, Virginia, USA, has been collaborating with Desktop Metal to evaluate the use of its metal Additive Manufacturing Studio System⢠in the product development stage. The company reports that a timeline reduction of 25%, as well as further cost and material reductions, could be achieved by switching from CNC machining to Additive Manufacturing for the prototyping of its components.
The BMW Group has announced that it will invest more than âŹ10 million in a new Additive Manufacturing Campus in Oberschleissheim, just north of Munich, Germany. The new facility is expected to allow the company to develop its AM expertise, having begun series production of a metal additively manufactured cover carrier for its i8 Roadster in December 2017.
Proslab, a dental laboratory based in Canterbury, Victoria, Australia, states that it has fully digitalised the manufacture of its cobalt chrome removable partial dentures (RPDs) using metal Additive Manufacturing from the UKâs Renishaw plc. The company has now installed what is thought to be the first metal AM system for dental applications in Australia.
MELD is a unique process for Additive Manufacturing that avoids melting the metal, thereby eliminating issues associated with melt-based processes. MELDâs open-atmosphere operation and scalable equipment is also said to make it more efficient and capable of making larger parts than similar processes. In addition to Additive Manufacturing, MELD can be used to repair, coat, and join a wide range of materials, including some metals that cannot be welded with traditional processes.
General Motors stated that it sees 3D printing and generative design as âkey technologiesâ in the development of new products, including alternative propulsion and zero emission vehicles, and that Autodeskâs generative design software will allow the company to exceed the weight reductions made possible by traditional design optimisation techniques.

Hospital reconstructs patientâs chest using titanium 3D printed implantÂ
According to NHS Wales, the 71-year-old patient required the implant following surgery to remove an extensive sarcoma â a cancer growth in the soft tissue â from his chest, resulting in the removal of part of the breastbone and three ribs altogether. Though necessary, the surgery left the patient at risk of chest wall destabilisation and potential collapse.
Traditionally, the chest would have been reconstructed using a cement prosthesis. However, although hard-wearing, cement prosthetics do not provide an exact fit and can move within the body, causing issues such as dislocation. In addition, cement prosthetics take around an hour and a half to prepare during surgery, putting the patient at increased risk of complications on the operating table.
Using metal 3D printing, the surgical team was able to produce a titanium implant to the patientâs exact fit and specifications, as well as reducing the overall surgery time by around two hours. To achieve a custom fit, the implant was designed by Heather Goodrum, Morristonâs Biomedical 3D Technician, and Peter Llewelyn Evans, Morristonâs Laboratory Services Manager, based on CT scans of the patientâs chest.
