While this is oversimplifying and generalizing the metal head community, it has a degree of truth. Metal heads know how to love just because you know the stereotype of our music does not mean you know the reality of the situation. Get to know a metal head.
This is something that I personally had happen to me. This was a huge issue in my family who are mostly Catholics. I had to explain to them time and time again that I didn’t worship Satan.
Some progressive metals use no vocals at all. This trace/progressive song by Animals As Leaders is a prime example.
I honestly HATE how criminal minds uses the fact that the criminals listen to metal music.. in one episode the metal heads weren’t even the bad people, now a father was talking about how his son listens to metal and it’s not understandable.. idk, it’s just ridiculous how even tv shows target metal heads for being destructive and bad. I know many people that listen to metal and they’re the nicest, non violent people you could ever meet.
Even your taste in music has a stereotype. I have lost friends just because I told them I listen to metal and they thought I was a satanist because of that.

The Sign of the Horns, in metal, has never meant praise to the devil or anything of that nature. In fact Ronnie James Dio raised the sign as a way to connect with his fans. This hand gesture is now used by metal heads everywhere . He got the sign from his grandmother who said it was used to “ward of the evil eye”.
The claim that listening to extreme music causes anger and expressions of anger such as aggression and delinquency has yet to be substantiated using controlled experimental methods. In this study, 39 extreme music listeners aged 18 to 34 years were subjected to an anger induction, followed by random assignment to 10 minutes of listening to extreme music from their own playlist, or 10 minutes of silence (control). Measures of emotion included heart rate and subjective ratings on the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). Results showed that ratings of PANAS hostility, irritability, and stress increased during the anger induction, and decreased after the music or silence. Heart rate increased during the anger induction and was sustained (not increased) in the music condition, and decreased in the silence condition. PANAS active and inspired ratings increased during music listening, an effect that was not seen in controls. The findings indicate that extreme music did not make angry participants angrier rather it appeared to match their physiological arousal and result in an increase in positive emotions. Listening to extreme music may represent a healthy way of processing anger for these listeners.
Many people think of metal as an anger provoking music but to the people who listen to this extreme music it can make them process anger.
