Well.. Hello Tumblr, long time no see...
Let's see what happens if I start posting here again after 4 years
Iroquoi creation story. Character design for āthe sky womanā. At the beginning of time there were people living in the sky, the earth was covered only by water and the sun was a giant tree of light. One day a woman got pregnant (first pregnancy ever) and her husband, mad furious, threw her in a hole where she fell from the sky. She would have died if a bird hadnāt catch her while she was falling. As she was about to give birth, the sea creatures gathered and grabbed some mud to stack on the back of a giant turtle which created North America...
There were no real description for the sky people so I just designed them as normal Iroquois. Tell me if you think the costume or anything is off :) .
This one is about a Mayan legend that sais people are made from maize (corn paste). The two main creation gods were Kukulkan (top) and Tepeu (bottom), both were half snake half āhumanā. After few tries that failled to create a species that would worship them (so that they could continue to exist) they decided, to call the god of corn (left corner) and make humans out of that...which worked!
So the creation myth comics covers different cultures: Maori, Inuit, Maya and Iroquoi. Here are few character design for Papa the earth mother and Rangi the sky father. This Maori creation myth is a powerful love story between earth and sky (Papa and Rangi) who are forced to be separated so that life could bloom on earth (itās a bit more complicated but...You get the idea).
I imagine Papa to be round and soft as it used to be a beauty standard among maori before western came over and also because...well...earth is round! (OR IS IT?!) . Rangi on the other hand is vaporous and slender like the atmosphere wrapping earth. What should be Ā aTa Moko (Maori tattoos) covering Rangiās body are patterns formed by the air making the same design than a Ta Moko (loosely).
Once again PLEASE, if you are familiar with this culture let me know if there is any inaccuracy or if anything is offensive.
So at the end of the year I decided to do this massive project of what was supposed to be comics/picture book but ended up being a full 24 pages comics....Itās about creation myth from all around the world.
So here are some character designs, this one is for Sedna the inuit giant goddess of the sea. As she was banished for eating all the food on earth I imagine her to be quite chubby and of course absolutly massive (she hides the sun at some point)
PLEASE if you are familiar with the Inuit culture donāt hesitate to tell me if Iāve done something wrong regarding the tattoos or anything. I would love to learn more so that I can fix these mistakes next time :) !
A couple of things Iāve done today. I though it was finished but aparently it isnāt u_uā
@chat-mot is oppressing meee ... oAo
Ho, and these are based on the short story āthe necklaceā by Guy de Maupassant (1884)
So Iāve been to Bolognaās childrenās book fair, a week or so ago, and I had a massive kick in my butt regarding what I do as a student and what I do outside of the course (which is doing nothing since al my time is taken by the course u_u). I realised that although the course has taught me a lot in organisation and discipline, I drifted away from who I am as an artist, and I donāt know how to trust myself anymore since everything we do need to be analyse in the context of my course. So while Iām in holliday, and with the coaching of the amazing @chat-mot, I dropped everything regarding school and focused on my portfolio and what I like to do, even if itās not justified or āwrongā or āweirdā. And Iām doing so as fast as I can, like I would work as a freelance illustrator. Here is the first piece: kitch book cover for Donkey skin by Charles Perrault
yeah...Iām pretty bored ha ha. Iām making stickers as well and the first picture is going to be at the back of the card :)
So Iāve been working on my buisness cards and other branding stuff. Here is the result, but I still canāt decide if I want the āillustrationā or not..
my piece for the yearbook 2016. Every year the 3rd year illustration students at Falmouth produce a sort of yearbook that will also be used as promotional material when we travel around (in New York for instance) or once we are graduated. The theme this year was Wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, so it had to be intriguing, have a curious object as well as showing our skills.
I choose to make something about Ijiraat, Inuit spirits-shape-shifters, which are said to be sometimes pure evil, sometimes misunderstood or even just lost spirits. They kidnaps children and leave them to die in the blizzard and get the hunters lost. They can take ANY FORM but the one thing they canāt hide are their bright red eyes...
mixed media: gouache, watercolours and colouring pencil.
Hey I just realised that I never submitted the final illustration of the evil-step mother! So here is it. Itās mixed media, I really wanted to do an etching to remind the old illustration of the 18th century but....the print failed u_u It was horrible, and I still donāt understand what happened, I guess I could have tried to make an other etching plate but I was really frustrated it didn't work and I decided to make a painting at the end.
Also it was made to be a triptych so I did a little montage to show how they all work together :)
my entry for the fantastic Alcoholicalphabet zine directed by the no less fantastic @freddiursa
C for cointreau, a French orange liqueure, and FYI Anger is a town in France u_u I should probably write āfromā in front of it actually!
Ok last sketchbook page ha ha sorry for the spaming!
Another charater design study, and yes I was greatly inspired by Mucha for the lady-moon u_u
Another page of my sketchbook for the graphic novel.
(ha ha believe me it was not intended but the sketch in the top-right corner kinda remind me of...Kim kardashian o_o...)
A sketchbook page.
Character design for the graphic novel Iāve done in september :)
Also the third panel seemed really āsloppyā compare to the two others, so today I re-worked it a bit. Here is the ābefore/afterā Iām pretty pleased with this ^^ his face and eyes are more striking and the whole thing has more depth.
Also, in case its all a bit confusing, this is the part where the boy who turned into a bird after his death/murder re-transforme into a boy
The last picture for my ājunioer treeā project.
He was supposed to have red eyes but I am submiting this as b/w rough for my assesement...
