I have a conspiracy theory that my gym sets stiffer during and around winter to maintain their more intense outdoor climber customers. Which on its own is like totally cool I understand that climbing grades are neither monolithic nor really that important. However, the fact that I'm not sure about this throws me off because if I am struggling on 5.8 in December and breezing up 5.10a in May, I need to figure out if I'm actually improving or just a beneficiary of the conspiracy.

Like. In The Forest. A critical game mechanic is entering caves via ropes left there by the previous spelunkers. But. this asshole is descending the rope no gear no condom no problem? Body raps exist but bro is switching from rappelling to ascending in under a second. This is Hulk level fitness.

The Long Dark has this too. The player character loses stamina as they go but the fact remains that a malnourished and exhausted homey can climb 50m rope no gear no condom no problem? No. I have ascended rope now. It is painful and exhausting. You cant do that shit no condom. Let alone no gear.

Been taking a climbing course recently and it is v funny to have such a big change of pace from what is standard in the gym. From "I don't know if I'm comfy with a belayer who's using an ATC :(" to "Good job learning toprope belay yesterday! Are you ready to follow me on this trad pitch?"

Today we were talking about how words can mean different things to different communities, and that people outside the community wouldn't understand. Like how a non-poker player wouldn't understand poker jargon the way other poker players would. Anyway, then my professor said he was gonna show us his "favourite example" and wrote a single word on the board that gave me instant psychic damage: beta.

Apparently sport climbers use this word with a meaning of "technique, method." But for a horrifying, horrifying second there was the possibility in my mind that we were gonna talk about ABO in my fucking linguistics class

The "local" resole guy seems to be a bit of a ghost. Supposedly he's partnered with all these climbing gyms where you can drop your shoes off and get them resoled by him but none of them do it anymore and if you try to go through the website, the online form doesn't actually send you a confirmation email.

I was ready to accept my fate and just drop some more cash on a new pair of shoes but somebody comes along and tells me "oh yeah he still fixes shoes, but you just need to ship them to him with the information on a sheet of paper. Given that's about the most reliable confirmation one could hope for in the climbing community I bit the bullet and did just that and. Holy shit they actually emailed me an invoice.

Honestly just a little wild to me that in current year (2026) there is a business that mainly functions on the basis of sticking a pair of shoes into a tree and sticking a crisp fifty in there and waiting for them to show up on your front doorstep repaired.

So theres the classic joke of hikers setting up cameras and running back to get footage of their hike but like

im watching a guy do that except on a fucking 45 degree slope with crampons and ice tools. He's climbing to a point, setting up a camera, traversing 50 feet one way and climbing 50 feet up, and presumably going down to retrieve the camera again and going back up.

I guess on the scale of an 8000 foot mountain its a drop in the bucket, but I can't see myself mentally surviving that.

Woah man, this wizard hike is invigorating. I just saw some guy clap his hands together and say "Breeze of the Seven Mountains" or something, and everyone around him was swathed in a chilling mist and had their exhaustion vanish. People didn't even look up, that's how captivating the Twelveswood is. I'm over here casting granola and level 2 cooling. I think I just heard someone say "Power word: Refreshments" up ahead. I gotta get up there.
