Final Compositing Video
Putting together my final video
-Once I had finished compositing my animations and were happy with how it all looked, I brought them into After Effects and began putting them together. I also added in my sound effects adjusting the levels so it is all coherent to the clips.
Robot fishing animation.
-Again with this animation I refined the paint colour as it was not staying in parts of the bodies outline, giving a messy look to the final animation that I didn’t want. I also again animated the eye adding in an eyelid to express where the robot is looking and to also blink to give a more realistic outcome
Robot yoyo scene
-This is my final composited shot of my yo-yo animation. I roto’ed around the building to make sure the robot sat well , along with making sure it was also behind the lamp-post just in front of its leg. I also made sure the paint work on the animation was neat and not spilling over the lines to give it a more professional look.
-I also made sure to add animation to the eye so it looks like the robot is following the yo-yo and blinking to give a more realistic outcome.
Finding sound
-I wanted to find ambient sound to put over my videos, as most of the sound recorded with the footage had talking over it or noise from the wind. I mainly used BBC sound effects to fine ambient sounds from cities that could match the location of my clips. I also found little sound effects that sound robotic so I could add them into my videos to add a bit of character to the animations.
Scrapped work
-I tried adding in my orange colour that I drew in Photoshop onto my robot, however the framing was all off and not matter how much I changed the frame rate I couldn’t seem to match the timing. I’ve decided to scrap this approach as it will take too long to go back into Photoshop and re-adjust the 300+ frames to then try and sort out in Nuke.
Composited robot walk scene
-I managed to bring in my 3D robot and roto out certain parts like the lamp-post and the guy on the left to make it blend into the scene well. I also added my other robot so that they can wave to each other and cut between scenes when I put all my shots together.
-I’m also drawing over the top of my 3D robot in Photoshop to add some of the orange colour I have designed with all my robots.
Rotoing
-In the scene where my 3D robot is walking down a street I have to roto round the lamp-post so he goes behind it and I also have to roto around the man walking on the left so the robots shadow doesn’t effect him too much. This particular rotoing took a while to do as he was in the scene for around 150 frames and I had to make sure the roto followed his movement.
Metro train render 2
-I ended up adding in my 2D robot into my metro animation with Nuke. I also added a copy of the train to look like another carriage and make it look more realistic. I might just refine elements a little further and extend the time to 8 seconds before I bring it into my final video
Exporting out animations
-As I’ve been finishing my 2D animations in Photoshop I have began exporting them out to put in my scenes. At first I had trouble getting rid of the background to make it work in Nuke, but thanks to Nicks help I sorted out the alpha channel so it could then work with the premult in Nuke.
Metro train render test
-I also composited my metro train into my scene. I had to roto the bridge so the train would sit behind the bridge properly. Again I will adjust some parts of the animation and colouring to make it blend more into the scene, which I can then add my 2D robot over the top.
Rendered robot test
-I composited my 3D robot into my scene to see what it looked like. I like the outcome but I want to work on the footing better as the feet sinks into the floor a little and I’ll sort the shadow as well so it bounces up the wall.
Metro model
-For one of my compositing scenes I wanted to make a model of a metro train that I would put a 2D hand drawn robot on top, in the instance that my character is travelling somewhere.
Animation walk through
-This is a clip of the process of my yo-yo animation that I have created in Photoshop.
Creating hand-drawn 2D animation
Animating
-I imported my camera and scene from Nuke into Maya as an Alembic cache, so when I was animating I would know what position and angle I would be working with.
-Whilst animating I struggled a little with getting the position of the robot right to match the angle of the road so his feet were landing on it properly and weren’t sliding around.
Rigging and texturing
-After modelling my robot I used advanced skeleton to rig my robot, which I had to weight paint to keep certain joints locked and prevent from getting distorted while animating.
