- Chapter one : welcome to dandridige -
When your father asked you to come to visit him from college instead of going home to visit your mom in cali, you didn’t expect your dads roommate to be some hot ( yet still slightly age inappropriate ) single guy…
See, your parents divorced when you were about eight, your mom being the free spirit she is decided to take you and everything she owned and moved to the West Coast. You visited your dad, the poor idiot during the summers..instead of him taking care of you..it ended up being you taking care of him.
In the divorce, he got the house, the car, and kept his money, your hippie of a mom didn’t care about that shit anyway, but being alone in that big house ten months out of the year, sent him into a spiral..resulting in a depressing drinking bender..that lasted a decade.
You had stopped going to visit when you were eleven. The way he acted when he was drunk made you feel scared, uneasy, and anxious. You knew he’d never actually hurt you but you still weren’t gonna stick around a whole summer while he drank his life away.
So that’s why when you got a call from him, saying he had been sober for two years now, getting his life together and wanted you to come to your hometown to visit? You were..hesitant. After some groveling on your behalf, some talking through your feelings with mom. You decided to give it a shot.
Thus brings us to now, summer of 1999, you’re walking through the airport, makeup caboodle in one hand, suitcase in the other while your fringed leather backpack is slung on your shoulder by one strap. You scan the airport for your father, ‘It’s No Good’ by Depeche Mode playing on the Walkman that your dad had given you in the fourth grade.
Your head tilts curiously as your see a man you don’t recognize holding a ‘welcome home’ sign with your name on it. You had recognized your dad’s handwriting on the sign from the letters he had written, the whole situation growing suspicious within your mind.
“Who the hell are you?” You inquired after making long strides towards the stranger. your brow raised in suspicion and your arms crossed accusatorially.
“Your y/n, I presume..?” The stranger groans as he pinches his nose, a dramatic sigh leaving his lips.
“..oh well, what gave it away..?” You say as your lips quirk upwards into a smile, tilting your head to the side in a slight flirt as you lean on your suitcase handle.
“Well, for starters, your old man said you’d be a smart ass..and a pain in my ass..” he said
Oh what the fuck? Assholes. Both of them.
“Hmm. Funny. ” You deadpan before continuing. “Where is that..guy that contributed to my existence..? Second off, WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?!” You huff as you cross your arms back over your chest and look him up and down.
He was tall, with dark brown eyes that looked like maybe he had seen some shit. His short brown hair was turning gray on the sides as well as on his beard, and he had a scar on his nose that looked like it had been broken before, broad shoulders and big arms..in his mid thirties maybe..?
“The kid he’s sponsoring in AA needed help, so ya got me..I’m Joel, his roommate.” He says, bringing you out of your thoughts.
“Greeaaattttt..” you say in a snarky sing song tone, giving Joel a sarcastic smile before it immediately falls, rolling your eyes and handing him your suitcase by its handle “here. It’s heavy.” You huff before walking forward “You don’t even know where the car is-”
“Lead the way” you cut him off as you skip forward. Leaving Joel with a dumbfounded expression on his face.
You tried to strike up conversation with Joel as you walked to the car, only getting grunts and eye rolls in response..not a talker..got it.
As you got to the car, Joel threw your suitcase in the back of his truck. Earning an exaggerated gasp coming from your mouth.
“HEY! Careful!” You shout, stomping your foot. The heel of your boot clicking on the parking lot pavement.
“Get it in.” Joel barks back with a glare, nodding his head toward the passenger's seat.
What is this assholes issue..?
You let out a huff, opening the car door as you throw in your bag and gently set down your makeup caboodle, hopping in the car and buckling in.
Joel starts the car, a big sigh leaving his lips as he backs out of the parking lot, you nonchalantly put your feet on the dash, no biggy, right? Wrong.
Joel looks at you like you insulted him personally, his glare was sharp and cold, harshly spitting out a short and cold “NO.” Before pushing your calves off the dash with his palm.
“Jeez..sorry..” you say as you cross your arms over your chest, sitting up in your seat before looking at him “so how did you meet my dad..?” You inquire, tilting your head to the side.
Joel looks at you. Like makes direct eye contact before leaning to turn up the radio with his index and middle finger, then turning back to look at the road.
You furrow your brows and look at him in disbelief. Asshole. Figures this is the kind of company your dad would keep..
You decided that you were getting nowhere with Joel. Wasn’t a talker and frankly wasn’t someone you wanted to talk with, so.. sightseeing out the car window.
You watched the slightly familiar welcome sign of your hometown “Welcome to Dandridige,” as you drove past, nostalgic old buildings of the old town, realizing how much you missed your hometown, which was small. Close-knit but a good community..you watched the beautiful green trees of your little hometown in Oregon you had missed oh so much, and couldn't help but get to thinking you had wished that things had gone down differently in your childhood..
Your eyes light up when you see a familiar sign on a building, ‘Bill and Frank's bar and grill’ a rush of memories flooding back; mom and dad taking you there for pancakes on your birthdays up until the divorce, dad bringing you in there for dinners every summer.
Really it was just his excuse to get drunk and, oh I suppose feed his kid..but Frank would always be there to distract you, asking you questions about school, your favorite subjects, and they didn't seem to mind when you’d inevitably fall asleep on the booth waiting for your dad to finish his drinks.
“Bill and Frank’s is still open huh..?” You smile with a raised brow as you watch the building as Joel drives past it and up the gravelly hill towards your old neighborhood.
“ I guess, kid..” Joel sighs as his fingers hit the turn signal, your nerves were on overdrive. Was Dad gonna be the same? Was he different sober..?
“What? You don’t go out..?” You poke the bear, resting your head on your hand that was now resting on the window seal of the car.
Joel doesn’t respond, only pulling into the familiar driveway of your childhood home, putting his truck in park and exiting the car, leaving you in there without another word.
You roll your eyes and snatch your bag from the cars floor, picking up your makeup case and opening the car door.
Joel, was already at the porch with your suitcase, standing waiting for you as he dramatically tapped his foot. You roll your eyes again, bottom lip sticking out as you furrow your brows at him.
“Hurry up.” He says sternly, Texan accent was thick, any other person it would have been charming..but on him it was starting to make your blood BOIL. And you haven’t even known the man for twenty four hours yet.
“I’m coming, old man. Don’t be such a grump.” You chide, stomping up the white wooden porch steps of your childhood home. Joel, is now standing there dumbfounded as you walk past him and wait at the door.
When Joel opened the door, you were greeted with a familiar layout as before, only the interior looked like two men definitely lived there, fishing supplies discarded in a random corner, your dad's dear heads displayed on the wall from hunting..only this time your mom wasn’t around to tell him we couldn’t hang them up.
Long story short, ugly decisions, slightly messy and warm lighting..comfy though.
You’re examining of your surroundings was cut short. An unfamiliar bark, desperately seeking your attention. You look down to see a German shepherd wagging his tail, his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth.
“Oh my god you have a puppy?!” You squeal, setting your stuff down as you knelt to pet the furry baby infront of you, looking at his dog tags ‘Troy’ written on his bone shaped dog tag.
“No. I have a dog..and..he don’t like people.” Joel defended. His face scrunched as if calling his dog a puppy was a personal attack against his ego.
Troy was already on his back, tail wagging as you rubbed his belly. The furry animals leg kicking as you scratched a certain spot on his belly, making you let out a giggle.
“I’m special I guess..” You smile up at Joel, only earning an eye roll from him and a raise of his brows as he walks away, leaving your suitcase by you.
You roll your eyes, a huff leaving your lips, you were about to say something, but you could hear your dad's car pull up on the gravel driveway, Troy’s ear sticking up as he heard the car park.
You stand up, a sigh leaving your lips, dusting the imaginary dirt off your skirt before opening the screen door and walking out onto the porch, unfortunately, running right into your dad who was eager to see you.
“ y/n-y/n..? ” he stuttered out, catching you as you stumbled into him. You stare up at him as your eyes well up with tears, lip wobbling like it always did when you were about to cry.
“H-hi..” you say as you let out a shaky breath.
He looked..different, better..the dark circles were gone, he actually looked like he was taking care of himself..he looked like your dad again, before the divorce.
He pulls you in for a hug, you immediately stiffening at the sudden contact “you’re all grown up..so beautiful..” he cried into your hair
You smile, patting his back awkwardly as you lean in for a side hug “hey dad..” you muttered against his shoulder.
He pulls away, holding you by your shoulders and smiling “ya look good, Dad..better..” you say as you pat his shoulder.
“ fully sober. Two years.” He says proudly, the look on his face was contagious, making you smile “that’s good..that’s good..” you nod as you take a step back.
“I see You kept the Walkman I gave you?” He smiles as I nods for you to walk inside “oh uh..yea..” you smile as you look down to the Walkman that’s clipped to your skirt, headphones hanging off your neck.
“I take it you met Joel too..?” He says as he opens the door for you, letting you inside before going in himself.
“Yeah he’s..interesting..”
