Verso liked being watched.
Through viewfinders, on billboards, or on the spreads in the magazines; Verso loved being seen. Observed.
But all the eyes in the world weren't worth his, Verso's little secret admirer, who preferred to shoot through telescopic sights, not cameras, and in public, instead of private.
Verso would love to be his, to only be seen by him and him alone, to have his eyes focused only on him. Alas, his secret admirer was an elusive man, one who spent his life on rooftops, among gargoyles, one who welcomed the darkness of the night, and one who always watched but never shot.
Verso has been shot many times; in the mornings, for GQ, at noon for Vanity Fair, and in the evening for Men's Health. He was no stranger to the feeling of someone else's eyes on him. Just on him.
So when he felt it, as he made his way across the street, with his sister on his arm, Verso was delighted. A bloom opened in his chest, filling every available space with soft petals and the delicate smell of spring.
Verso looked up, his sister walked forward. It was a day like any other, quiet but full of appointments. On a skyscraper nearby, so high that it almost touched the clouds, a light shone like the reflection of a diamond. There.
Verso smirked, pleased beyond himself to be observed by the most important man in the world. And he liked to think that the man smiled in turn, as he saw Verso through his scope.
"Hello," Verso says slowly, every letter a move of his lips, knowing the other man can read it. "Dinner?"
A shot sounds in the intersection, scaring some pigeons nearby. For a heartbeat, Verso thinks the bullet lodged itself into his chest, painting his suit with a red too ferocious for a first date, but as the world calms down around him, he notices a bit of smoke coming out of a sign across the street.
See the world through new eyes. with the 'yes' a perfect, round bullet hole. Verso laughs to himself. What a ridiculous man he fell for.
