“It would never have occurred to him that in placing the apricot in my palm he was giving me his ass to hold or that, in biting the fruit, I was also biting into that part of his body that must have been fairer than the rest because it never apricated—and near it, if I dared to bite that far, his apricock.” - André Aciman
Later - An Ode to Oliver (and what he likes to eat)
Don’t forget Elio.
He said, “Call me by your name and I’ll call you by mine,” which I’d never done in my life before and which, as soon as I said my own name as though it were his, took me to a realm I never shared with anyone in my life before, or since. ©

Hey, guys, I know that we’re all really sad that Call Me By Your Name didn’t win, but we need to remember that many of these actors and movies are still valid and probably have incredible performances as well. Trust me I’m devastated Timmy didn’t win and don’t think Oldman should get any slack for his actions but I really hate that there has been so much bashing Three Billboards. It’s a great movie with a great message and while we wanted cmbyn to win, that doesn’t mean that we should immediately hate on what beat it. Thank you and goodnight.
WELL SAID
Sorry but the size difference between these two is freakin’ adorable

Posible unpopular opinion
I really want the cmbyn sequel (aka #2/infinity) to end with Oliver crying over trying to keep himself appart from Elio. [I have like a massive headcannon on how I want it to be]
I really want an in-your-face parallel, I really want moopy Oliver.
u got me at the closeup shot of oliver weeping
I had a thought today: I think how you take the ending of CMBYN, and with it the possibilities and expectations for sequels, depends to a degree on how old you are. This might sound pretentious but isn’t meant that way. Just bear with me.
I’m 44. When I started reading the book, I wondered what a 17 year old could possibly tell me about love. But it isn’t a 17 year old who narrates the novel - it’s a man in his late 30s, looking back on when he was 17. The book deals heavily with time and nostalgia and memories and how strange and unreliable those are.
After having watched the film, I somehow can understand the ‘devide’ in the fandom. There are many folks who think the ending is so sad, the novel’s perhaps even more than the film’s. Because Elio and Oliver don’t end up together… I might be wrong, but I think most people who see the story this way are rather young. Which is totally fine. Especially the film is made for them, with Timmy being their peer and all. It’s to them Papa Perlman speaks when saying ‘Don’t rip out your feelings in the face of loss and sorrow, or you’ll go bankrupt by the age of 30′.
Believe me, talking from beyond that age, it’s true. It’s also true that life and love are never easy and simple, that joy and happiness are a somewhat rare occasion, that maybe you might find the one person only once but you might also find many who come close - as Elio does. If you read Ghost Spots, you realise how very wise Aciman is - at least to me from my point of view. Papa Perlman doesn’t say that life and love are always happy - instead, he tells his son to accept and embrace his sorrow and sadness and grow with it.
Despite it’s setting, CMBYN is neither just a romance or a fairytale. They might read from one in it - but the reality of the film and book transcends this realm and makes it a very real, very mature story about love AND loss and therefore about life.
Especially in Ghost Spots, Elio reflects on what he’s done with the memory of Oliver. To me, it becomes obvious that Elio hadn’t been in a coma - for god’s sake, he’s a drama queen! He says himself that he had fulfilling relationships after Oliver. And Oliver has a family he obviously kind of loves - he talks a lot about his sons to Elio.
The moral of the story to me is that happiness can be found in different ways and places. And that hope never dies. That one can deeply love the memory of one person yet be with another.
They are both not dead inside - they changed and adapted. Elio purposfully avoided Oliver - who did the same. They kept their distance out of some sense of self-preservation. But that doesn’t mean that it’s too late for them. At the end of the book, Elio is not even 40! They have a lifetime ahead of them! And they also made some important experiences.
This might sound strange and gloomy to people half my age - but it really isn’t. There’s always hope. Things can change. It’s what I learned with the years. They didn’t waste the time spent apart - they learned and grew, developed and realised what they really need. Those are important lessons in life. It prepared Elio for the loss of his father, for example. And Oliver has to learn that his sons grow up as well and become independent.
If Papa Perlman’s speech is for the young, Ghost Spots is for the elder. It gives the story perspective. It also explains that you are not old or grown up in your 40s - as Oliver says himself. he sometimes feels younger than his sons. A very relateable feeling for me.
And that is the appeal of both book and film for me: it is truly mature in addressing so many levels. I can remember the agony of being young and falling in love. I also can appreciate what follows. Therefore, I could deal with a sequel in which they don’t end up together. For example, a sequel in which they understand what they mean to each other but still don’t act upon it.
The ending of the book felt somehow hopeful to me. Perhaps because I’ve experienced love like this, affairs that stretch over a long period of time; and different degrees of love. Anyway, there still is a possibility for Oliver and Elio, and even if they don’t end up together, no one can take their summer away from them. Sometimes memories are all we have. It doesn’t have to be like that - so perhaps what we can all learn from this movie is that it is better to speak than to stay quiet. For better or worse. Happy endings are never guaranteed but it’s worth to try.
Thank you, @isitandwonder . This is lovely and so true.
Omg, everyone should read this beautiful and thoughtful comments. It’s sincere and true. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS WITH US @isitandwonder <3
Ghost Spot has a strong impact on me, and Aciman is really experienced with love and life and I can’t love him more. At first I felt crushed by the ending in the book, but soon I felt like it’s not really that bad because they will always have that experience of love, found and being found, which some people might not have their entire life, might not even know that kind of love exist. And later I realize what an unreliable and dramatic narrator Elio is. Oliver did show how he remembered and felt and he came to Elio in Italy, so there really is still hope. They didn’t waste that 20 years, as they didn’t in that summer, despite 17-year-old Elio saying so. And really, I totally agree that the book ending actually is hopeful. They’ve matured and grown after 20 years, and sometimes in life, timing is everything. I felt like that might be a better timing for them to be together than back then when they’re young and still exploring.
@isitandwonder @timelosserscmbynobsession @foryou-insilence as an older fan of the novel, I agree entirely. I chose this handle for my side blog because I read hope in the last visit of Oliver to Crema. But it’s also about needing to see more of your life to know what you had way back when. Elio has no perspective at 17 - we may see that Oliver is a grand amor - but Elio might just think ‘a first love’ or something else. You only see the big ones in hindsight. The novel Elio knew because he was 40 when writing
It’s hard to ‘know’ in the moment. When you’re overwhelmed with feeling and urges and the whirlwind and the rush. I don’t say this to diminish how either felt during their time together- it was obviously an unparalleled experience for both of them- but it does take time and distance- and age- to put things into perspective. Aciman is a genius in understanding this and in how he makes it work throughout the book. The progression of Elio’s narration, from If not later, when? to Ghostspots is a master class in the subtlety of the shift in his own perspective- from the infatuation and sex obsessed moments of youth to understanding that you had your other half for a fleetiing moment and lived a life- not incomplete- but certainly not whole. Both Elio and Oliver had happy lives, just a different kind of happy than what it could have been. I had my own Oliver (he was 22, I was 15) and while I’ve been married to another summer fling now (we knew each other 3 days before deciding to get married- crazy, I know😋) happily for 24 years, it doesn’t mean I don’t still long for that first love. That my love for the man I am married to and have children with, doesn’t in any way, diminish the love I had for my Oliver. Who knows what we could have been? But it doesn’t change the fact that our love was real and true. But I can only say that now, 30+ years later. At the time it was fun and lovely and I loved him, but I had no idea that love would linger. That to this day, I would still remember…everything. @isitandwonder @timelosserscmbynobsession

let me say how much this moment kills me, how especially oliver kills me. he is so happy to spend some time alone with elio. he doesn’t think that they need to say goodbye to each other in a few days. he is just living in the present moment. his elio is with him and nothing else matters. and you can say that this time is the happiest time that he ever had (and will ever have) in his life. and this hurts. this hurts because in a few days the realization that he should let go his elio hits him. so much that he isn’t even able to sleep on their last night together
BE STILL MY BREAKING HEART
Well in my mind ( and If they end up not doing a sequel) Oliver calls off the wedding himself and goes back to Elio. I know that would be completely different from the book, and I adore the book but that is the ending in my head and the one I want.
Seriously, we all think that at least once. You know this book and movie makes you ache for this kind of total intimacy and love and you identify yourself with that summer in the mid-eighties, you dream about being there yourself. You imagine being one of the lovers and then they lose each other and you just think god, please no. Some part in you just can’t accept the fact that it didn’t work out. That a love this big and deep got wasted by circumstances of life.
We all ache for love to work out, we always want love to win but you know, that’s why life isn’t always easy. Because sometimes love just isn’t enough and this is what makes this book and movie so damn real. We experience moments of total intimacy, we witness what it is to be deeply in love. We go through heartbreak and loss and in the end it seems like it was all for nothing.
But in reality we carry it with us for a lifetime and no one knows about this but ourselves. We remember every kiss, every touch, every feeling of pain and sorrow and desire and fury. We remember every conversation, every thought, every single dream and every sleepless night. And no one knows but us.
That’s why don’t always crave for the happy ending. Because we don’t always get a happy ending in real life. But sometimes loss and pain and sorrow teaches us so many things. It changes us in ways nothing else can.
And sometimes it changes us to the better.
Holy shit this is so well put and everything I needed to hear after finishing the book. Thank you.
I want to be good.
