Loved the new chapter (what else is new), was ruminating on it, reading others' comments... and just, gah. My heart hurts!

The chapter title alludes to these three parallel moments already, all things that break. At first this started as a sketch of the bowl (rip), since it had such a striking visual in the text... but I wanted to include the other two moments as well. They all work well together as, like... three instances of unwilling vulnerability and shame, seeing the 'real' John, and being rejected/punished as a result. Some real 'I wouldn't like me if I met me' type self loathing, both warranted (insulting Tyler) and unwarranted (Shawn's judgement).

I would be so gutted in John's position, from the humiliation of the Shawn interactions, to shooting himself in the foot with Tyler, and finally complete self-inflicted tragedy with his wrist. I'm assuming it's his drawing wrist for maximum angst potential, which would just... ugh, I can't even imagine. When his career is already in a rocky and uncertain place. When it's all he has to distract himself from his shitshow love life. I'm in distress

ANYWAYS I wanted to practice hands, so hands I practiced. I wanted to use all the primary colors as well, so the lighting is inconsistent between Tyler and John's frames (since they're supposed to be like, within a minute of each other) but shhh it's for the aesthetic. Maybe the concrete is just really blue where John fell, it's possible...🤣

Bonus since I could not stop thinking of this meme while reading. It fits them both. From before the interview:

okay purely rambling here but—

You know WHAT I like that Geoffrey Brenner is mean and pretentious and has out-bitched John at every turn. Because seriously, we have this cocky little string bean of a white boy who is drawing covers for this century-old magazine at the age of 28. He's popular, he kinda thinks very highly of his talents and position, he thinks he knows everything about art and the art world—someone should push him? Jostle him! And be a little bit of dick about it?

IRL, if I were mentoring John, yes I'd probably have an hour-long conversation with him just to understand who he was before administering critique. I'm a teacher who likes human beings and I meet students where they are.

But John is so over-confident and irreverent and charming and quippy, I can understand how Brenner just has no tolerance for any of that. Like, we get John's very over-confident POV when he strolls into the art gallery:

"People like this did not frighten him. John Rich had been an art major at Samwell, one of the gayest, artsiest, liberal arts colleges in the United States of America. Before that, he had been working at pretentious art galleries around Boston, and before that, visiting avant-garde exhibitions as a toddler with his mom."

"No problem. If there was one thing John could do, it was talk about art—his art or anyone else’s. He’d been explaining his “practice” to art professors and competition judges since he was in high school."

John is just so...comfortable with everything. And never once questions himself. The way he navigates the art world is just matter-of-fact. He belongs. And the way that he talks to his boss upon meeting him? Given John's persona on Cover Sessions and his first impression with Brenner, it's no surprise that Brenner thinks: "Well. This man clearly believes themselves to be some sort of savant—a child-prodigy. Given his effusive charm, he's probably has never been pushed. Well, luckily, I'm here."

[On that note: John, Brenner, and Tyler are like this weird triangle of characters.

Geoffrey Brenner treats John the exact same way that John treated Tyler. That is, lots of assumptions and loads of condescension. But where John is really bad at assessing people, Geoffrey Brenner is really good. (He's just mean.)

Geoffrey Brenner and Tyler Hughes are two characters who want the exact same thing from John: vulnerability. Brenner wants it because it's best for the his magazine and if intimidating John is how he's going to get it? Fine. Tyler wants John's vulnerability because lol he admires John's genius and just wants to be close to the Real John Rich—not the guy from the YouTube show. Every single time Tyler does that "tight smile" of his? That's his bullshit detector pinging because he knows he's getting John's persona and not John.

(And John and Tyler are the same because they're both incredibly insecure, but Tyler seeks out connection in spite of that and John fucking runs in the other direction.)]

Anyway. In the vast majority of cases, i would not wish Brenner upon anyone. But for a cocky privileged artist who is coasting on talent and carefully placed defense-mechanisms? Yes, kick his ass!

I enjoy Az already realising he likes Crowley by the time Adam appears but hasn't yet worked out what to do with that information bc acts-of-service Crowley Can't Talk, Wont Talk.

Crowley on the other hand has been VERY GOOD at ignoring why he spends so much of his time around Az so only on the crux of YOU'RE GOING TO LOOSE HIM did anything manage to force its way through to his brain. (i did not enjoy crowley being told he was in love with az in s2, i think he could have worked it out himself)

i rly enjoy hcs where they started sleeping together and with humans for fun (i mean the ox ribs scene sets some v good precedent for this) az sleeps with humans bc he indulges! he likes pleasure! crowely on the other hand is very bad at catching feelings and doesnt like it when they die so has mostly only slept with az (did i mention he's VERY good at ignoring his feelings) but they probably haven't slept together for a few hundred years when adam pops up.

my compliant show!hcs are still that az knows he loves crowley (i mean the scene with jim where he leaps out of the chair to attempt to protect crowley saying no he defo doesnt know ANYONE who he feels that way with, don't look closely at anyone he is with) and is just sort of sitting on it still, waiting for any hint from crowley, planning a ball definitely only for humans and no other reason. Crowley is obviously very protective of Az but he still hasn't clicked why he's worried about him but he doesn't have the excuse of heaven or hell anymore so it wouldn't have taken much for him to work it out (hello one of his first lines in s2 is "you ever think, what's the point?" the point is love you idiot)

Snufkin’s Soup!

My dear Cheshire got me into the Moomins a few years back, primarily the comics and what I could read of the books (I still need to get my hands on a physical copy of them, dangit cost of living! -shakes fist-).

Anyway, Snufkin is extremely relatable to me and basically lives the life I dream about living so after finally deciding to binge watch all I could of them I decided to see if there were any recipes for the soups and stews he makes in the show. And tada! There is! 

It’s the most Finnish recipe I’ve ever cooked but it came out pretty damn bomb with some tweaking, if I do say so myself.

I figured others might like it too, since he’s become so popular here, so here’s my version of it: 

6 carrots  1 large onion  2 tbsp oil 3 cups water  1 vegetable broth cube 3 tablespoons of wild rice 1 cup of heavy cream

Salt and pepper to taste.

Pinch of thyme for each bowl.

1. Peel and slice the vegetables, stir them together with oil in a large sauce pan over high heat. I left my carrots in big chunks because I’m a New Englander and that’s how I like my potatoes in chowder but if you do that I recommend cooking them for about five to ten minutes with a cover over them all on their own before adding the onions because they came out a bit tough in the center for me. Cook, stirring consistently, until onions are golden and slightly transparent. 1.5. While veggies are cooking, bring water to a boil in a medium to large pot. 

You know you have the right sized onion if it’s roughly the size of Little My’s head. 

2. When water is boiling and veggies are mostly cooked, add vegetable broth cube to the water. Stir broth, add vegetables to the pot once they’re ready (careful of splash back!). 

3. Now add the rice, stirring continuously, for around 30 minutes or more depending on the rice you used. Mine took about 40 minutes because I added wild rice to mine instead of white or brown. 

4. Bring to a gentle simmer and add the cream. Stir continuously over low heat, remove from heat when it reaches desired thickness.

5. Serve in your favorite bowl with a pinch of salt, pepper and thyme to taste! You can also try green onion or a similar veggie/spice of your liking but I think the thyme is the perfect addition to not overwhelm things. <3 

6. Share a bowl with your favorite Moomin! It is a Snufkin soup after all!

And there ya go! :D A delicious dish, straight from Moomin Valley! (or the farmer’s market/Stop ‘n Shop, whichever is closest. ;3)
