Nothing forces me to confront the reality of the universe like literal cosmic perspectives. We are sentient star stuff, loving and hating each other, on a spinning rock, orbiting an average star, hurtling through one of billions of known galaxies in the observable universe.

A dear friend of mine reached out to say how impressed and inspired she was—and is—by LGBTQ people. “They were protecting themselves and people they loved and honestly, when you’ve been persecuted your entire life, you look at situations differently.” Indeed. We definitely look after our own, even when we can’t stand certain people or “that one bitch.” It’s quite the community to be a part of bc almost all of us have had to overcome some kind of cultural or emotional adversity to arrive where we’re at. This strength is our superpower. We find meaning and love in each other. You can’t eradicate or ban that.

So this could change since it’s nearly 4 a.m. ET on November 11, but what the hell. We’re almost certainly holding the Senate with Kelly’s win and Cortez-Masto’s likely win and probably even netting a seat next month with the Georgia runoff: 51-D/49-R. That means we’re still able to confirm judges and administration positions at record pace.

And after hours/days of pouring over House numbers and listening to and reading election data experts with far more knowledge in the field than me, I think the likeliest outcome at this point is 219-R/216-D…which is remarkably good. Democrats are keeping their House midterm losses to single digits in a cycle when they should’ve been shellacked and against a historic backdrop of the sitting presidents party losing dozens of seats.

It’s a good sign for our democracy because it means there are actual consequences to running shitty, conspiracy-minded, sedition-curious nutjobs on the ballot across the vast majority of the country. It’s also somewhat easily correctable in 2024 and makes peeling away sensible Republicans more doable than it would’ve been had we last several more seats.

One thing is for sure: the future Majority Leader is about to have the worst, most impossible job in Washington: corralling a caucus of far-right zealots, Trumpists, and a few moderates with a two-seat majority. LOL.
