I would like you all to have a look at the fantastic teacher materials on this website.

For this weeks reflection, I would like you to browse the many grade 5 and 6 videos and materials available. CLICK into Resources, check the grade 5 and 6 boxes as well as the ENGLISH box.

You may or may not be able to match these resources to your particular AT2 book, either way, it is worthwhile knowing that the ABC always provide teachers with classroom worthy materials.

Your task is to critique one of the 5 / 6 English resources and critique it as if you are reporting back to fellow teachers in a planning meeting or a staff meeting. This may be a video or audio record, handwritten notes, formal notes, a mind-map or a similar cognitive organiser - be creative and we will be looking forward to hearing what you have to say!

I found an English resource that was called “Indigenous”. I feel as though that this resource would be very necessary in our classrooms today so that students can learn about the history of the indigenous people and gain an understanding of native Australians. The students will understand the extent of where the Indigenous Australians lived throughout Australia and the languages they spoke.

I hope that you have enjoyed placement and are back on board ready to work through until the end of the trimester.

In seminars this week we have looked at Before Reading, Frontloading, and Predicting. In the week 6 seminar Powerpoint, there are excellent activities based around Way Home by Libby Hathorn. I would encourage you to read the prediction and questioning strategies demonstrated in those slides, to help you to come up with 5 questions that you would ask grade 6 children, directly addressing the front cover of DUST. You can use ideas that were explored in the week 6 seminar.

Your challenge is to present these five questions in a multi-modal format, we encourage you to be creative here, how can you ask these questions in an engaging manner?

PROMPT 6 2018

THE PHONICS DEBATE

The link above contains a video recording of a phonics debate provided here through the Australian College of Educators.

Your task is to watch and listen to some of this recorded debate.

You begin by forwarding the video to the 20-minute mark. Beginning around the twenty-minute mark you will see one speaker for the teaching of phonics, followed by a speaker who questions the positioning of phonics in the teaching of reading. The two speakers run from the twenty-minute mark until the 37 and a half minute mark.

Watch both speakers and take notes. After watching from the 20.00 to the 37.30 minutes mark, and having taken your notes, we ask you to complete a RAN chart to help organize your thinking. It is probably easier of you make your own RAN chart.

You may well be asked about Phonics at a job interview so it is worth starting to know more about this topic, now!

When I searched #picturebooks I found a really good blog that was called “The Blorg”. The Blorg is just different cartoon images that express the way certain creatures are feeling. They are really unique and I feel as though the students would really enjoy these images. I could use these images within my classroom and be able to teach a lesson with the use of cross-curriculum if necessary.

PLACEMENT REFLECTION

Now it is time to reflect on placement and the literacy happening in the room you were in.

If you were not on placement recently you must write about a good, and not so good, literacy experience you have had in a classroom.

Those who were on placement have the same task, tell us what you liked and what you did not like when you were on placement and try and discuss reading and writing at least once.

It would be wonderful if you could include an image of something you saw during placement, but we understand that many of you will be reading this after placement, see how you go. A photo of the school would also be very interesting to your assessor, PLEASE DO NOT include the images of children and their faces.

And it would also be great for you to share what the kids were reading, what are the popular classroom novels in our schools.

From all of us, we do hope you had a rewarding and challenging round and hope you are more determined than ever before to complete your studies and become a great teacher.

A good literacy experience that I have had in the classroom with my students is when I was on my first year placement, where I was in a class with year 1 students. It was a real eye opener to me just how much the students loved reading and really appreciated when we would all read in class together. When reading as a class the students were intrigued, as they were asking many questions relating to the characters and were able to follow along the story aline and make connections throughout the book. The book that I was reading to the class was Winnie-the-Pooh and I had a positive experience using this book with the students.

This week we would like you to reflect on the current state of handwriting in schools today. It might be asked of you in a in a job interview; ‘will you teach handwriting in your classroom?’ Or, ‘how often will you practice handwriting with your students?’

Have you heard teachers on placement discussing handwriting, are you aware of parent opinions, do you have you strong thoughts of your own? POSTERS 

Thank you to all of you who have posted or replied to the week one prompt. As usual many of you shared experiences with Enid Blyton books, and this is a great memory for me as I read the Magic Faraway series to my girls when they were tots.

This week we would like you to make a poster that could be used in a classroom. It should be literacy related, and could be similar to something you have seen in a classroom. It should reflect something in literacy that you think is important in a classroom you will one day teach in.

Another thing you could do is take a photo of an existing classroom display, one that is teacher-made, as in handmade, and share that with us!

Your own poster can be digital, or made with materials, scrapbook style, hand drawn - be creative

I’ve chosen to create a Literacy poster as I am with the middle year levels on placement and believe it could be of benefit to their learning and my teaching. It covers all the basics of literacy, which is important in a child’s education.

When I was in grade three I remember my teacher reading to the class Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We sat in silence absorbing every word, it was fantastic!. The teacher read Roald’s next book Charlie and The Glass Elevator as well and it was also a big favourite. Years later I was lucky enough to be teaching my own grade 3 and 4′s when the Harry Potter series came out. Once again a class sat in silence absorbing very word as this time I read the novel to the grade.

For your reflection this week we would enjoy discovering your memories of being read to. Preferably this would come from your own classroom experiences, otherwise, it can be a reflection on what a parent read to you, or if that doesn’t fit, you can share what you would like to read to a class when you have the chance.

One of my fondest memories of primary school was when I was in grade 2, when my teacher read the novel “Captain Underpants” to the class. I was never a confident reader and found it very boring as I was wanting to be outside playing sport all the time. After my teacher had read this particular novel to our class, I found a new passion for reading as I found this novel entertaining and comical. As this was one of a series I then borrowed the remaining novels and enjoyed reading them. Ever since then I have loved to read all different types of novels.

After searching through all the picture books using the #picturebooks I came across one book that stood out to me most. It was posted by @harpercollins called the ‘Goodnight Moon’ that was written by Margaret Wise Brown. After researching the book I found out that it was about a rabbit saying goodbye to the world. The image in the room is also interesting on the front cover as it is a cow jumping over the moon. This book was also published several years before man had landed on the moon. 

If I was to use this book to teach a literacy lesson and mankind hadn't have landed on the moon yet. I would ask the students what they would think it would be like to be on the moon as well asking them if they would ever think it would be possible. This would be the start of a sequence of lessons as you could link it into space and even rocket ships and what it would be like to be in one of those.

The video that I have chosen to use is ‘Indigenous Australians today’. I would use this video to describe the unit for the front loading lessons because it shows the students how the aboriginals are being treated in todays society. Whilst giving them a brief understanding of how they were treated 50 years ago in the year 1967 and some information on aborigines in todays society.

I am feeling hollow as my dog died through out the night due to the cold weather. He had no strength left in him and we should have noticed from his silence that he wasn’t eating any food. I feel transparent about this whole situation and wish I had noticed that he wasn’t well.

The world doesn’t care about us anymore.

In my lesson I would get the students to research each of those words in Image 1. After completion students will then write a definition for each of those words and then create a short story using those words.

I remember when I was in prep with my teacher reading the very hungry caterpillar to our grade. This was a big moment in my schooling as I was struggling to read at the time and this was the first book that I was able to understand.

I found researching picture books very interesting. I don't have a lot of experience with picture books as I have barely used them in my times on placement due to me being with the senior school. If I was to be with the lower years I would use picture books all the time as the students need to look at pictures so they can fully understand what the story is trying to say.
