ok ik the whole thing is julie can see the guys bc they’re attached to her and they’re supposed to help her but what if.. julie can just... see ghosts. she always could. she’s seen willie and caleb multiple times and she always asked her dad ab the guy in the weird trench coat and top hat as a kid but he was like literally what are you talking about. so when she meets willie she can see him and everyone’s like woah and she lik.. haven’t i seen you skating down hollywood blvd before?? and he’s like what??? and she’s like yeah you’re always there and i never understood how you didn’t hit anybody but you were gone before i could figure it out and everyone’s like *blink blink*

Small Things I Love About Julie Molina

She screamed and ran for her dad when she first met the phantoms. Talk about an appropriate response to seeing ghosts (for once).

She vehemently asserts her boundaries and calls the guys on their bs.

She loves Flynn so much and treasures their friendship, and even wrote poetry about her.

She knew her aunt’s schedule well enough that she had a Pilates class in episode 1.

She totally rolled with Reggie’s country album dream.

She doesn’t have a clever comeback when Carrie goads her. You don’t have to match your bully in wit, they’re still being a jerk no matter what.

Even though she still liked him, she didn’t accept Nick’s date because she knew it wouldn’t be fair to him because of her complicated relationship with Luke.

She has a lot of respect for her dad (also Ray is killing it as a dad????), can talk to him and banter a bit with him.

She has a vivid imagination and daydreams when she’s happy/excited (re: “I Got the Music” and “Perfect Harmony”)

She was careful about how she gave the song to Mitch and Emily, giving them a little closure and essentially telling them Luke had a good life and a good legacy.

Her little speech before playing “Stand Tall”

She was so excited to show Flynn the music she’d been writing

She lets herself feel upset and sad and angry rather than bottling it up

The line dance she was doing with her dad, brother, and aunt after her Orpheum performance.

V. An abandoned or empty place for Willex please???

(Ignore the fact that this was like a week late please and thank you.)

"You sure about this, Hotdog?" Willie teases as he lets Alex tie on the blindfold. "Usually I'm the one poofing you to mysterious locations."

"I'm like 81% sure this will work," Alex says. His tone sounds like more than 19% nerves, but Willie doesn't comment. "It worked fine when I tried it with Reggie the other day. So. It'll be fine."

"I trust you," Willie promises, finding Alex's hand and squeezing.

"Okay," Alex mumbles. He falls quiet for a second, then adds, "You ready?"

"Ready."

There's a moment of silence, then Willie feels himself poofing out, his soul following Alex's as it teleports through space. It feels a beat longer than they're used to, but then they're landing on some kind of hard surface. Willie stumbles and Alex's free hand immediately finds their shoulder to steady him.

"Darn, I was going for inside," Alex comments. "You okay walking blindfolded for a minute?"

"I'm good," Willie tells him.

They start walking slowly, Alex gently guiding Willie by the hand. The air feels cooler wherever they are. Fresher too, less pollution. Not LA then.

"Through the glass here," Alex instructs.

Willie appreciates the warning even if he doesn't *need* it. They step through a glass wall (window?) and the ground hardens under his feet. Concrete inside probably?

"Where are we?" Willie asks, curiosity getting the better of them.

"Just a minute, almost there," Alex promises, leading him along a little faster now.

Willie can hear their footsteps echoing through the space as they walk. It sounds so hollow. The place must be massive. It feels like they go through some sort of tunnel and Alex finally stops as it opens up around them again.

"So, you're always taking me to closed museums and stuff with lots of space to skate and stuff... and I read about this online so..." Alex trails off and pulls Willie's blindfold free.

Willie can barely make sense of what he's seeing at first. The space is too massive to take in all at once. They're at the bottom of a section of stadium seats that must be 50 rows up. Below them is another similar section, and beyond that is the biggest track and sports field Willie has seen in their life (afterlife?). Above them, the roof is criss-crossed with some kind of framing.

"It's one of the venues from the Beijing Olympics," Alex explains. His tone is soft but it seems to hang in the dead air around them. "It's apparently been mostly abandoned since then. Seemed like the kind of place you'd like."

Willie turns in a slow circle, taking it in. "Woah." Then, with a grin, he lets out a massive scream. It echoes through the area around them, fading as it travels through the space.

Best. Date. Ever.

welcome back to Overanalysing Tiny Details: Alex’s Costume Edition

so here’s what julie wears the first time we see her. she has this snapback pulled down over her face, which demonstrates her insecurity and the state of lost identity she’s still in after her mom’s death.

here’s how alex wears his snapback:

his face isn’t covered at all. obviously this is partly cheesy 90s fashion, but in contrast to julie it shows us that he isn’t hiding who he is at all. he’s confident in his sense of identity and self, and he doesn’t feel he has anything to hide. despite his anxious nature, he doesn’t really shy away from himself.

another thing: alex’s signature colour is pink.

that might not seem like a particularly big deal, especially to younger viewers, but the connotations of a queer character wearing pink are huge. for so long it was considered emasculating for a man to wear pink. i’m only eighteen, and i remember HATING the colour pink as a kid because i didn’t want to be associated with anything traditionally girly (hello, internalised misogyny & internalised homophobia!). colours like pink or purple, as ‘feminine’ colours, have a long and complex history when it comes to lgbt+ people (see the lavender scare or pink triangles as examples).

remember that kenny ortega has been working for forever on things like high school musical or descendants, which are CRAZY queercoded, especially in the costumes (a post for another time but WOW kenny ortega has like. the gay midas touch).

alex is such a strong role model in this show because these little details normalise being confident and self actualised as a queer teen/kid.

he’s not just a character who happens to be gay. there’s actually a fair bit you’d have to change if you were to make alex a straight character, some of his costume details included. moments like him dancing with dirty candy are played for comedy, but not because you’re making fun of alex: you’re having fun with him. he’s just a gay teenager who loves pop music and being a little extra, and it’s an integral part of his character without being othering.

tldr his costume is a crucial aspect of how he’s presented as a gay character and it makes me so dang happy.
