My Family’s Slave

She lived with us for 56 years. She raised me and my siblings without pay. I was 11, a typical American kid, before I realized who she was.

“She didn’t know any other way to be. I realized I had to take my own advice and relax. If she wanted to make dinner, let her. Thank her and do the dishes. I had to remind myself constantly: Let her be. One night I came home to find her sitting on the couch doing a word puzzle, her feet up, the TV on. Next to her, a cup of tea. She glanced at me, smiled sheepishly with those perfect white dentures, and went back to the puzzle. Progress, I thought.”

i couldn’t sleep last night because my heart felt so full.

i feel so blessed! to have been part of such supportive and long-lasting dance communities at both stanford and new york. i felt truly myself when i wholly committed to alliance and to synchronic. it’s funny looking back and seeing that i wrote a post this time last year talking about my dedication to alliance.

i am constantly blown away, amazed, and so humbled by my teammates’ talents. the small part of the east coast dance community that has welcomed me is so good at freestyling and foundations!! (but seriously, how the fuck is everyone here so good at freestyling? this little trained studio dancer definitely needed a wake up call.) it feels so nice to dance bigger, simpler, and more with the music.

been also feeling shook this morning with logic’s genius videos describing his lyrics in killing spree and 1-800-273-8255. particular quote:

“i know my worth, i know who i am, i know i’m special as are the people watching this right now. so fuck everybody, stop being so focused on what others think of you or needing to, you know, talk to this person or do that and just make sure you have that time for yourself and enjoy time to yourself.”
