I'm going to touch on this more when I write my OTK review but GOD, the Camelot years plot would have benefitted immensely from SGE having a hard magic system. since there's basically no rules for anything, there's no real way to coherently track the plot since whenever Soman needs something to happen he just invents a new bit of magic that can do it? For a series about a magic school it seems odd that the magic system basically has no rules-- it's not to say that soft magic systems are bad or don't work, but in this case I think everyone would have felt less incredulous abt some of OTKs stuff if the twists had relied less on new information about new magic stuff and had been more rooted in stuff we already knew. Basically no one uses the spells they learned at school anyway so it feels pointless hh

It appears absolutely no one realizes this character (assuming this story takes places during the time in which it was filmed) grew up during The Troubles of Northern Ireland.

You don’t if he’s Northern Irish. You don’t know if he’s Catholic. You don’t know if he grew up watching his people get murdered by Loyalist Protestants and British soldiers who carried heavy racial prejudice against Irish Catholics (hellooo, Bloody Sunday anyone?), who had for centuries been characterized as barbaric, racially inferior, lowly people who needed to be wiped out or converted. Attacks by the IRA, and therefore retaliation by the British, didn’t completely cease until 1998, I believe? This film came out in 2002.

You don’t know if he was an Irishman who grew up in England. Bomb attacks carried out by the IRA in England kindled misplaced aggression toward innocent Irish civilians living among the English population and Irish people were verbally and physically attacked and their businesses targeted. Perhaps similar to how ordinary Muslims bear the brunt of aggression after attacks by Muslim extremists…

You can still find yourself threatened and demeaned if you’re a Catholic in Northern Ireland or if you’re a Protestant in Ireland and some older dude in a pub in a smaller town straight up asks you if you’re Catholic or not and you’re afraid what’ll happen if you don’t lie about who you are.

You can still hear casual racism toward Irish people in everyday life and in publicly broadcast media in the UK.

You can still see and hear “Kill All Irish” and other pretty heavy anti-Irish sentiment among Loyalists in Northern Ireland who don’t consider themselves Irish at all.

Just because it now appears that the island of Ireland has been allowed to move on from war and their appearance and culture generally allows them to blend into and reap the benefits of the White European demographic doesn’t mean that this character does not have the background suitable to fully empathize with her. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t, we just don’t know his story.

But I guess you’ve never been demeaned as a Paddy or a Taig so you wouldn’t understand what it feels like, would you?

I normally don’t comment on posts like these but the ignorance of this makes me so fucking angry because absolutely no one in the world seems to give a shit about the Irish because we all just seem to be so happy and drunk all the time. Because they’re white, right? So obviously they have no idea what hardship means.

First of all, pretty much yes to everything about Ireland up there. Growing up in Northern Ireland, I saw the violence from all sides - my father is a British Protestant and my mother is a Catholic, so I basically couldn’t win because according to one side I was a dirty taig and according to the other I was a filthy hun. Luckily I managed to make friends with a mix of both Catholics and Protestants who all thought this attitude was just as stupid as I did, but between all of us, we saw our fair share of sectarian violence, and the Catholics, without a doubt, got it worse.

Irish Catholics were robbed of their country by Protestant invaders centuries ago. They fought and fought and eventually got the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland), however, thanks to the deliberate plantation of Protestants to eradicate the Catholic majority in the North, it was left under British rule. Since then, Catholics have been murdered, arrested, terrorised, tortured and driven out of their houses just for being Irish Catholics. 

I moved from Northern Ireland in 2010 and to the day I left, the violence was not over. I couldn’t wear certain colours in certain areas because I would be beaten. I had fake names depending on where I was stopped, as attackers can determine what religion you are from your name alone (and this is a trick I learned, too, for defence). I can recite my rights if I’m arrested because if I was stopped in certain areas I could be, on the assumption I could be Catholic. I know the subtle sectarian geography of the city of Belfast because if I cross the road in the wrong place I’m in enemy territory. I have been chased by a group of forty people, throwing fireworks at me, because they assumed I was a Catholic. Police were parked on nearby streets and didn’t acknowledge the commotion. My friends and I walk past graffiti screamed “Kill All Taigs”. A fifteen year old boy who lived half an hour from me was beaten to death by a group of adults for being Catholic. For fifty years, people have been detained without trial, tortured, beaten and wrongly imprisoned just for being Catholic, because apparently, being Catholic means you must be in the IRA. 

Even now, I can’t escape it. I have a noticeable Northern Irish accent, which is stronger when I’m around people from there and is noticeable as a strong accent whenever I’m not in the country. At airports, I’m always the one stopped and frisked if they hear my accent. At ferry ports, it’s alway my car (which has Northern Irish registration plates) that’s “randomly selected” for a search. All of this just happened to me, a person who got off lightly.

If you think that Irish people haven’t faced oppression and abuse, you’re wrong. If you think that Northern Ireland is past its troubles, you’re wrong. It sickens me that this happens only a few hundred miles away from England and no one acknowledges it exists, because hey, they’re just some terrorist Catholics, right?

i see this miscommunication a lot because for decades now racist americans have been using “the plight of the irish” as a dogwhistle best summarized as “the irish were just as oppressed as black slaves when they came to the united states, but they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and got over it, therefore black people just aren’t trying hard enough and need to stop complaining”

so when an american sees “i, an irishman, understand oppression” their first point of reference is not going to be the troubles or british colonialism, it’s going to be that dogwhistle, and they’re going to react accordingly

obviously it sucks to have to clarify that you’re not racist before explaining your own history, but. in the states and online, “let me tell you about how the irish have been oppressed” has very often been a precursor to misinformation about chattel slavery and indentured servitude, as well as minimization of the effects of structural racism, and that’s just the context we have to live with.

I really love this thread, especially that last addition because, even I flinched when I saw that image from op, even I was sitting there thinking “he needs to shut up…”. I’m so used to seeing this misrepresented Irish history dogwhistle on the internet that even though I’m actually from Ireland myself (the Republic, not the North though) that my first thought is always “oh no, here come those people…”. Like, I’m so used to seeing my own country’s history used to shut other people up that even I automatically ignored the context of the above scene and went straight to thinking that he’s a tone deaf idiot.

Which is…odd…and annoying.

Not only did large chunks of my history education in school consist of learning about things like the plantations, the outlawing of the Irish language and culture, the famine, the banning of Catholic people being educated, the war of independence, the partitioning of the island, multiple Bloody Sundays, the likes of the Auxiliaries and the Black and Tans, but I’ve seen plenty anti-Irish sentiment within my own life time. This is not ancient history. My own grandparents are older than the Republic of Ireland. I’ve heard plenty of first hand accounts of what it was like to live in a fairly newly independent Ireland. I’ve heard both my parents’ and grandparents’ accounts of the poverty of post-colonial/pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland.

And not just other people’s accounts. Even though I’m not from the North, even my childhood was filled with constant reports of bombings, stabbings, shootings, ‘disappearances’, the IRA this and Loyalist Paramilitaries that. I remember the tensions and violence that was caused yearly (and still is in some places) by the Orange Order’s marching season and Twelfth Night bonfires. In the last year or two I’ve seen pictures on Twitter of Twelfth Night bonfires that, in the lead up to the date were covered in Union Flags but, just before they’re burnt, these are replaced by the Irish Tricolour and signs that say “Kill all Catholics”. I’ve seen statements from the people who do this saying that it’s part of their culture and that it’s racist to ask them to stop. I remember the last time that there were discussions about giving the Irish language the same standing as English in the North, there was some guy being interviewed on the news who said that it shouldn’t be allowed because it was a threat to Britishness in Northern Ireland. During Brexit negotiations, Twitter was full of English people who thought that the best solution to the border problem was to “just take Ireland back” and that Irish people were “ungrateful” for having left in the first place. There were claims recently that Irish people are immature for not wanting to put the names of British soldiers on a War of Independence memorial. Myself and my parents once had a conversation with an elderly English couple where the man, once he heard our accents, told us that Ireland was beautiful. How did he know? He was a British soldier stationed here. He mentioned this casually and conversationally while smiling and getting the name of the country wrong. And while I was perfectly safe where I was living, I grew up surrounded by images of men with guns and knowing that the north of the island was a no-go zone for someone with my accent. I’ve had more than one conversation with an English person who will happily mock the way we speak, our language and our way of doing things to our faces. I’ve been on the receiving end of it more than once.

And despite all this, even I flinch when I see images like the one that started this thread because the internet’s discussions of colonialism are so US-centric and because our history has been stolen by the white supremacists.

And do you know what annoys me the most? I’ve come across post after post, meme after meme talking about how Irish history ‘isn’t that bad’. It’s minimised and made a joke of. Not only that, but I’ve come across plenty of well-meaning English people (both online and in real life) that are doing their best to educate themselves on England’s colonial past but for some reason this only extends to places like America, Africa, India etc, and never includes Ireland, Scotland and Wales and whenever anyone tries to pull them for it that person usually gets jumped on by a load of Americans who think it ‘isn’t that bad’.

The one thing that I will say about the addition above mine: “and that’s just the context we have to live with”. Would it really kill Americans to learn the context of other countries for once? I’ve internalised the context of the “plight of the Irish” dogwhistle so much that I automatically cringe anytime I see my own country’s history mentioned, why can’t they learn our actual history??

You know what’s sad? There’s this particular ship that I just cannot get behind and it actually annoys me so much because it’s normally the kind of thing that I love. It’s dramatic and angsty and ends terribly (it’s a canon ship). One of the characters is one of my favourite ever fictional characters. I love that this mess is part of their story line! But I can’t enjoy it. The other character involved is one of very few fictional characters that I can say that I actively dislike. Every time they open their mouth I want them to shut up. I see them appear and think “oh no, now I have to listen to them” *shudder* It’s so sad, everything else about this ship is right up my street and I would normally be all over it T_T

nicola is the best part of qfg. there. i said it. she was there for my emo bby self when agatha’s character development wasn’t. honestly, nicola barely fits in with the rest of the cast bc she’s so dynamic. her character ACTUALLY SERVES A PURPOSE unlike the 1 million new characters soman keeps introducing. if it weren’t for her, i prolly wouldn’t be able to get through this book

i feel like hicola + nicola were supposed to be more grounded parts of TCY, but then soman received backlash for ruining the prospects of hophie and now he’s back-pedaling by removing nicola from the narrative, writing hort as a shitty boyf to nicola, etc. girl barely got her time to shine before the fandom cancelled her huh

if hort could just let go of his unhealthy (and quite frankly, unrealistic) infatuation with sophie, hicola could very well be a solid ship. the two balance each other out far better than hophie does. hophie’s dynamic is just so… extreme, and i don’t think i’m ever going to be able to look past all the manipulation and entitlement that sophie and hort have forced on each other.

obviously im rooting for nicphie but we know that won’t happen xxx i seriously would love if hicola was endgame, hort got over sophie entirely and started treating nicola right, and sophie was fully competent with being single.
