Why is Meeka bald? /Gen

When I was initially designing Meeka none of the hairstyles I drew on her felt right. It took so long to decide on one that I saw her more with her bald base drawing than with hair, and it just kinda stuck! I decided to roll with it cause I thought it was a unique design choice then gave her some ribbons to match her feminine and flamboyant personality (also doubles as sun protection)!

In universe reason is just that she can’t grow hair, just like some people irl who have autoimmune conditions. Meeka would prefer to have hair, but she’s long since grown past any insecurity and has immense confidence in her style.

It’s Art Fight season baby! I’ll be going through my list of OCs and giving them fresh coats of paint and updated ref sheets since my style/designs have changed so much since I last drew a lot of them.

Starting off with Trill, an avian without wings who invents her own! She’s one of my favorite OCs so it was so much fun to draw her again!

Been feeling a bit down recently so I drew myself a little Alysa Liu to remind me to find the fun and joy in what I do! Might make her into a little standee or keychain to go on my work desk XD

(Translation: I think the way you draw is really awesome and wanted to ask if you had a tip or two to share for someone trying to get better at drawing people? If not that's fine I just wanted to pop in and say you're cool :D)

(Also I don't think "squishy" is the right word but it's 2am and my mental dictionary isn't working right now bleh)

Yeah I could give some art tips!

There’s so many things I could talk about for drawing people, design, expressions, anatomy, but I think to keep the post not too ramble-y I’ll talk about posing! Posing is something I used to struggle with but really enjoy now :D

Here’s how I posed out and drew my quetzal Grian as an example!

Reference

First I find references! If I’m just drawing casually I won’t use references but for full pieces I use them all the time. And if you’re worried you might be “cheating” if you use them, you are not. Trust me as someone who works in an artistic field, references up the quality of your work while also expanding your mental visual library, it’s a win-win!

Here’s some examples of previous art I’ve drawn and their references:

I recommend using real photos if possible and not other people’s drawings, sports photography is a great place to get super dynamic poses!

Lines of Action

First I’ll start with a few lines of action, which are quick lines that describe the energy of the pose. Usually I’ll have two main lines of action, one describing the curve of the spine, and the other for the connection between the arms/shoulders, and then build the pose out from there.

During this stage I don’t really think about anatomy, the goal isn’t to match the reference, but to simplify and push it. Try to stay as loose as possible!

Form

After that I’ll start adding the form on top. I tend to section out the body like this so that I can imagine rotating different parts around in space kinda like a 3D rig or a doll in case I want to modify the pose.

This is also when I start making proportional decisions! Ratio-wise, I tend to draw my characters a lot shorter than the reference shows, with big hands, feet, and head.

If I get to this stage and the pose feels too stiff or similar to the original picture, I’ll take the warp tool and just wrench the pose into something more extreme XD

Clothes, Hair, and Wings

Adding clothes can be tricky for me because sometimes they’ll muddy up the lines of action I drew before. To combat this I try to give keep the clothing shapes simple so they flow with the rest of the pose.

After that I added the wings and hair (always on a different layer so I can warp them around lol). I base these almost entirely off action lines, I just kinda scribble till something looks right XD

After that I just cleanup the sketch and ink!

If you don't mind asking, could I ask what brush you use for line art? It looks really good!

I use Tinderbox! It’s a default brush in Procreate’s inks section :D

Question for fellow artists, do you ever have to reference your own art to keep your style consistent?

Well that being said, here’s a cheat sheet I made for myself a while ago of my most commonly drawn Hermits (+ Jimmy lol) in my art style. Even though some of the designs have changed over time, I still seriously look at this all the time to keep my designs consistent

Old fan art redraw time! I have so many of these sketches I would do during college lectures then never finish, and my artstyle/designs have changed so much in only a few years, so it was fun to put a fresh coat of paint on them!

Never played Dispatch but SUPER interested in ur au 👀 Especially Skizz and his broken halo, is that specific to your au or just how u prefer to draw him? :0

Just how I draw him! I used to draw Skizz’s halo with a gap in it just as a stylistic choice, and it just kinda morphed into an actual crack overtime. Plus for my giggs phasmo sketches I would draw his halo as a bandana :D

I turned it into a headcanon that his halo is a semi-tangible thing, so it can get injured and heal again like a broken bone. Also cause I thought it would be funny if it gets caught on things like how wired headphones always get caught on doorknobs XD

I'm sorry if this has already been asked and I just missed it, but how did you get the UI so perfect on the Dispatch au posts??? That is so cool??? Did you do it yourself???

I used this template! I had to do some editing to get the format I wanted since the default didn’t give as much room for the character. The file was initially too large to open in Procreate so I had to open it in PS, flatten a few things, then move it back over, just in case anyone else has a super old iPad too XD
