On the donation for entrance principle.
When a venue – often squatted or formerly squatted – asks for a donation instead of an absolute and predetermined entrance fee, they’re not asking that because they don’t need the money. They ask for a donation rather than demanding an entrance fee to make shows or parties accessible for everyone. That means that if you can’t pay the recommended €3 we’re asking for, you still get to go in. It does not mean “Hey we already paid the bands and crew and we’re just trying to make something extra for ourselves or some charity”. It means recognizing that some people simply cannot afford to pay a steep fee in order to see their favourite band. It means that if you can afford it, we expect you to pay ~at least~ the recommended donation, possibly more if you can and want to, so we can afford to keep booking nice bands. It means that if you’re going to see a concert and you have €30 but you also want to drink a lot of beer and you maybe want to buy some merch, you don’t get to go in for free so you can drink two more beers. You pay. The fucking. Bands.
It means that when you can afford spending €50 on one evening, you might want to consider paying more than the recommended €3, so we can let other, less financially fortunate people in for less than that. And we can still pay the fucking bands. If a venue is asking for a donation it’s safe to assume no one except the bands and ~maybe~ the booker is receiving any of that donated money.
Basically what I’m saying is: The entrance fee being a voluntary donation does not mean it’s free. Pay. The fucking. Bands. Pay the booker, the promoter, the dj(s), the crew, these are all people working (often for free in these cases) so that you can have a nice evening/night. Any place that takes a donation for an entrance fee is not or barely making profit on drinks, so spending your money on that will not benefit anyone but the supplier of alcohol.
This has been a PSA. Pay. The. Fucking. Bands.
