Simone Ashley in Bridgerton season 2 (2022) Costume design by Sophie Canale
You can make a movie with where the only white character is a man named Ray Cism whose one line of his 16 seconds of screen time is “I seriously hate women and minorities.” and you’ll find fifty bajillion reader x Ray Cism fanfics and renaissance style drawings of him with a halo of golden light
The show and the fandom really want me to think that Eloise is being a “not like other girls” because she doesn’t like the idea of becoming a man’s property when she marries him - even if there is love, she belongs to him - and she’s apparently a spoiled privileged child for thinking that that is wrong.
Even this season is acting like her disinterest in Hyacinth’s etiquette lessons is her being selfish. Eloise is older than Hyacinth. Eloise has already taken these lessons.
Eloise wants to learn science and philosophy and math and history and economics. This is like watching all your brothers go to college while you have to sit in on your sister’s high school Home Ec class that you’ve ALREADY TAKEN as punishment for not wanting to marry.
Eloise is constantly treated as though she’s an immature self centered brat for not wanting to talk about dancing and hosting and fashion and marriage. The show and the fandom punishes her for feeling constrained by her life.
How is it that the show gives more sympathy to Anthony for the constraints of being the head of family, sympathy to Benedict for feeling like an outsider (which Eloise does too! He’s just allowed to pursue alternate lifestyles and SHE IS NOT), sympathy for Colin for feeling purposeless (when Eloise ALSO feels purposeless because she doesn’t WANT to just be a wife and baby machine), but little to no realistic sympathy to Eloise???
At this point the show is clearly taking a very anti feminist stance and making Eloise into more of an annoying child for chafing against social norms of societal misogyny that she CANNOT ESCAPE than any of her brothers for chafing against social norms and feeling kinda bad about it :///
the thing is, you should be on eloise's side. even if the show doesnt really want you to be a lot of the time, you should be on her side, everything she mentions is a genuine issue. its insane not to be. its insane to think she should just get married, that theres anything romantic about eloise marrying, that eloise becoming a mother is an interesting or useful storyline

Eloise Bridgerton makes me feel so deeply sad.
that feeling of growing up different, knowing there's something about you that makes you unable to be who people think you should be.
of having people in your life who you think can relate - a best friend, a sister, a brother - but the years go on and one by one they succumb to the traditional life. and you're happy for them, but-
but-
but you're so lonely
and they love you, but they don't understand. they're capable of fitting in in a way you aren't.
and your mum loves you but - does she? does she actually love you, or just the idea of what you could be.
if you were normal.
anyway if Eloise's "happy ending" ends up with her just finding the right man and proving her mother right I will end up on the news
Dearest friends together again. (x)
and if I said netflix accidentally made gold in season 2 with Eloise's subplot and now they have to grapple with the fact her book is steaming hot garbage in comparison and they understandably have no freaking clue what to do with her and that's why s4 felt so weird for her then what??? what ya gonna do? Throw me into the river? (pls do I don't wanna work any more tbh)

Really at that stage of life where an impromptu sleepover with my best friend or a lunch with my sisters will have me pondering the value of life and the importance of staying alive to see another sunrise with the people I love
