someone I follow on the bird app just announced they’re starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they’re reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic
I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS
I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there’s 10,000 other people that will continue…but if you participate in a fic “book club” server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?
the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don’t rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit “post”
this is directly related to this post I made about how fanfic authors now are treated like content mills, and not like valued members of a creative community who thrive on interaction. for the past decade, we’ve watched the fandom ecosystem disrupted over and over, as NSFW fan artists seek safety by putting their work behind paywalls, and self-conscious fic readers squirrel away their feelings in invite-only communities
an easy way to do your part to fight against the evils perpetrated by social media is to leave a comment on a fanfic you love
but don’t take my word for it – here are some responses that my fellow authors have left on this post:
The fact I had a fic that was fairly beloved and NO ONE commented on it because it was all being done in a fucking book club server made me want to scream.
I haven’t updated that fic in two years now.
I cannot express enough how imperative it is to show the writer how much you love their work. The comments don’t have to be novels themselves - even just an “I loved this so much!” Or keyboard smashing works wonders to keep the writer going. Please, we need to bring back supporting writers and artists now more than ever!!!
PLUS, plus…if people are talking about fic in private servers and not telling the authors, those people get the idea that the fic writer is “big.” Meanwhile the fic writer is sitting there, staring at a Google doc, struggling to find the motivation to write the next chapter, with 2 comments on a 20k fic.
They don’t feel big. They don’t feel appreciated. They don’t feel motivated. And they might stop writing or shelve their fic, never knowing that people were loving it in private.
Honestly this is the same for social media threads or even on this very app. If you can, tag the author. A lot of us have our socials in our AO3 profiles.
Feedback is lovely. Knowing what people like, what people enjoy in our writing, it’s so encouraging.

Opening his eyes and breathing in, Kids' brows would furrow with confusion as he stared at the vast ocean before him.
Wasn't he just in his bed?
Looking around, he walked along the sandy shores of an island he did not recognize.
"Killer?" he called out, his voice sounding hoarse, as if he had been yelling for hours.
Making his way along the outer part of the island, in search of his ship or any of his crewmates, he sucked in a breath of sick realization as his eyes landed upon the remnants of a long-destroyed marine building.
Memories flooded his mind as he recalled the events that had happened just months ago.
"I'll be alright, okay?" You looked up at him with sparkling eyes and a smile that could coax even the sweetest of words out of any hard-shelled man. "Just don't fuck up like last time" Kid rolled his eyes, a barely noticeable pink dusting on his cheeks as he quickly bent down to give you a peck on the forehead.
"Aye aye Captain!" you saluted him with a silly smile before hopping off the ship.
His eyes grew glossy as a sob threatened to leave his lips, taking steps closer to the ruins, he felt his legs grow weak. "___?" He called out, eyes wide and searching for something, for anything.
Surely if he's back here, it means you're here, right?
"They should've been out by now" Killer's voice rang out from beside Kid, startling him from his thoughts. "They probably got caught again, can't keep themselves concealed worth a shit–" his words would catch in his throat as an explosion sounded, sending a shockwave strong enough to rock the Victoria Punk.
Kids' eyes would go wide as he watched the side of the building blow out, the sound of walls crumbling and metal screeching created a cacophony of noise that caused a sick feeling to form in his gut.
Jumping from the railing of his ship, he ignored Killer's calls and ran toward the crumbling building.
Standing over the mass of rubble, he looked over the wreckage, a burning feeling caused his throat to constrict, and his eyes began to itch with threatened tears.
Another memory flickered through his mind, reminding him further of the tragedy that took place.
"Kid!" Killer would yell, having jumped from the ship in order to follow his captain. Another explosion shook the ground, sending rubble and dust flying toward both men, causing them to raise their arms to shield their faces. "I haven't seen a single Marine flee from the building, do you think–?" Killer stopped himself from finishing his sentence, looking back toward the massive Marine building that once stood proud.
Half of the building still remained, standing tall as the metal that held it up refused to give way.
"It was a trap" Kid came to the grim conclusion, "we sent them into a trap."
He knew it deep in his heart that you were gone, that this was probably some sick dream, but a small part of him hoped that you were still alive, that maybe you somehow survived. He knew it was far-fetched and unlikely, but he also knew that they never were able to find your body even after hours of searching.
Kneeling down, he began moving some of the rubble, throwing it off to the side as he searched and searched. But the rubble seemed to go on for miles, a never-ending mess of stone, wood, and metal.
And not one sign of you.
"We have to find them, they have to be in there somewhere" Kid hurried toward the wreckage, ignoring the dust that hurt his lungs as he breathed in. Killer reached for him, grabbing his red feathered cloak and pulling him back "It's too dangerous! We don't know how many bombs they set up, you could get blown to bits–"
"I don't care!" Kid yelled, turning on his first mate, a snarl on his face. "We have to find them, I know they're alive, they're tough" he glared, "go grab the others, have them help."
Another deep rumble sounded throughout the area, shaking the ground and causing the remnants of the Marine building to sway. "It's too dangerous" Killer spoke, keeping his grip firm on his friends' cape.
"We can't just leave them in there–"
"We're not going to, but we can't risk any casualties, not while the building is unsteady."
His flesh hand was scratched and bloodied as he continued to pull rubble away, he didn't know how long he had been on the island, nor how long he'd spent digging, but the sun didn't seem to move an inch since he first opened his eyes.
"___?" he called, maybe you'd hear him, maybe you'd yell out for him.
Holding his breath after every call of your name, he never once got an answer.
"Please" he whispered, "please just tell me where you are" his voice waivered, eyes pleading.
A small breeze would push against him, dragging along the sound of rustling leaves and the almost inaudible sound of humming. Feeling his breath catch in his throat, his heartbeat began roaring in his ears, blocking out the familiar sound of your voice.
Standing up, he slowly made his way down from the hill of rubble he had created, not minding whatever bit of metal or wood his pants would catch on as he desperately followed the whisper of your voice.
"___!" he'd yell, voice laced with desperation.
Making his way back toward where he came, he caught a glimpse of your figure walking along the shore. Your clothes were tattered, and your body looked wounded, but you walked with ease.
Opening his mouth to yell out your name again, his voice caught in his throat as he ran forward.
Slowly, you turned toward him.
His vision blurred with tears as he drew closer, slowing his steps so as to not barrel into you, he breathed a shaky sigh of relief. "I knew you'd–"
"Kid?" your voice was soft, sounding just as melodic as the day he'd lost you.
"___ I–" he started.
"Kid you have to move on" you interrupted him, "You have to accept that I'm gone, please" Your voice held a hint of desperation, "You have to let me go."
Shaking his head with disbelief his emotions swelled from pain, confusion, frustration, and finally anger. "Let you go? I- I've just found you, I searched for hours!–" he choked on his words, attempting to take a step toward you, he realized he could not move.
Shaking your head, you looked disappointed as you walked up to him.
"Wake up Kid, I'm dead, you have to move on."
Your words seemed to echo around him unnaturally, a strange feeling rose from his legs and into his gut. The ground beneath him opened up into a hole, swallowing him into an inky black abyss, one that surrounded him and seemed to seep into his body, leaving it feeling hollow.
He opened his mouth to scream, to yell, to call for you, but nothing came out.
"___!" Words finally found him as he shot up from his bed. Looking around frantically, he tossed the blankets from his body and stumbled out of bed. Searching through his room, he yanked open his door and made his way into his workshop.
Eyes scanning over everything in the room, they finally landed on a tall standing object covered with a tattered white sheet. Making his way toward it, he raised his flesh hand and hesitated for just a moment before pulling it off.
There stood a crudely made metal body, one not quite finished. It was held up with a metal stand, multiple straps held the torso, arms, and legs of the metal mannequin in order to keep it standing upright.
Swallowing thickly, he reached forward and undid each strap, using his metal hand to catch the body as it slumped forward, he held it against his body and remained silent.
A violent sob shook his body, struggling to allow himself to accept the fact that you were truly gone, he let himself bask in the idea that the metal body he held was yours. It was the only thing he could use to control the grief that picked at his heart, tearing it apart and leaving him feeling nothing but guilt.
He was the reason you were gone.
Sinking to the ground, he lightly dragged his fingertips against the bumpy metal, whispering sweet words.
But in the end, his room was empty, with not a soul but his own.

Sitting alone in Crocodile's office, positioned on all fours next to his desk in nothing but the robe he had requested you wear was not expected, but not surprising. It wasn't unusual for your boss to call you into his office, often seeking sexual favors to help with his stress. He had an attraction toward you, and you to him; despite it being deemed unprofessional for an underling to have such a relationship with their boss.
You knew Crocodile didn't care much about workplace professionalism, he had no problem making it known to those within the building what it was he was up to. However, it was deeply embarrassing on your part, because no matter how hard you tried, you could never keep quiet.
He would always make it a point to abuse the spots he knew would get you screaming, always wanting to hear you grow louder and louder. At times you'd question if he had some hidden kink, a desire of sorts to have others watch as he fucks you over his desk.
Truthfully it would not surprise you, but now was not the time for you to question the dark fantasies that plagued your boss's mind. He would likely show up at any given moment with a quirked eyebrow, wondering why your eyes were glazed over and your breath heavy.

You could hear the near-silent footsteps as they drew closer. "You haven't been waiting long have you?" Crocodile's deep voice echoed around the dim office.
"No sir" you answered, keeping your eyes on the ground.
He hummed, clearly pleased that you had not been waiting for him long. He wasn't one to care about others, but what kind of person would he be if he were negligent toward his favorite pet?
Refraining from looking up at him as he passed by you, your eyes only caught the barest glimpse of his dark grey slacks and well-kept dress shoes. They looked as if they had been waxed recently, was his plan for you to sit and lick his shoes? No, you mustn't wonder.
"Are you wearing anything under the robe?" he questioned. "No, I'm completely naked, just as you asked, Sir" You remained still as you spoke, still awaiting his command.
He said nothing, prompting a bit of anxiety to swirl in your gut, had you misinterpreted his request?
A groan from his chair told you he had taken a seat. "Good" he finally spoke, you felt your nerves calm, grateful that you had done everything to his liking. "Do you know why I called you into my office this late?" he asked, you heard the chair groan once again as he moved closer to you.
You inhaled sharply and flinched at the sudden feeling of his bejeweled hand running through your hair, his fingertips just barely scratching your scalp. It pulled a small noise of appreciation from your lips as you enjoyed the feeling, it was rare you were graced with such affection. "Well?" he growled, not appreciating your lack of response.
"No sir" you shivered.
Removing his hand from your head, you frowned and almost whined at the loss of contact, finding yourself already missing the warmth of his calloused and decorated fingers.
"Come here" he commanded, "I want you under my desk, between my legs, and be quick with it."
Quickly obeying his command, you wasted not a second as you crawled into the open space beneath his desk. It was perfectly sized, leaving plenty of room for you to be comfortable whilst on your knees. It also (thankfully) kept you hidden, preventing anyone from seeing the vulgar display as you positioned yourself to his liking.
Leaning back in his chair, you swallowed and glanced up at him.
He was watching you with that predatory gaze of his, you shivered once again as you made eye contact with him. You always found his eyes to be unnervingly beautiful, the stunning gold color reminding you of warmth, yet all you found was a cruel coldness.

Unlatching the lock mechanism on the front, you'd slowly open it, finding a green collar with golden studding and an O ring attached. It had a matching green leash sitting next to it, delicately folded to fit in the box.
Slowly, you placed the box on the ground and removed the collar, "and this is for me?" you asked again, voice barely above a whisper.
"If you're willing to wear it" Crocodile spoke. He was watching you more intently now, more focused on your reaction and how you felt about the item you so carefully held. But overall, it seemed he was eager to know if you liked it or not, and truthfully; despite it being a rather perverse gift, you were touched.
"Can I... put it on?" you questioned, voice holding a hint of uncertainty.
"Do you understand what it means?" he asked, "once you put that collar on, you're mine, no one else's... Do you understand?" He didn't want to trick you into something you didn't want, he had built this relationship on nothing but sexual gratification, but it has become more and more apparent to him that his feelings have greatly changed during his time with you.
He still had yet to understand these feelings, unsure if he could truly call it love, but one thing he knew for sure was that he could not lose you to another. Crocodile shivered at your words, a low warning growl sounded from his throat as he watched you tighten the very thing that would seal your fate as his.
Finally, you removed your hands and looked up at the man who now owned you, showing him proudly the collar that sat perfectly around your neck. "The leash" Crocodile motioned with his flesh hand, "give it to me."
Taking the item from its box, you took notice of the delicate gold threads that decorated the green leather with patterned swirls. It was beautiful, you know knew why Crocodile had chosen it, as it matched him perfectly.
Placing the leash into his open hand, he reached forward with his hook and slid the sharp tip of it into the O ring of your collar. You couldn't help but shiver at the feeling of the cold metal against you, the sharp tip just barely pricking the underside of your chin.
Using his hook to drag you closer, you moved to stand on your knees, placing your hands on his thighs to keep yourself steady. He admired you for a few moments longer, his eyes traveling up and down your face, you didn't miss the way his eyes just barely flickered down past the neckline of your robe, a small amount of your chest just barely exposed.

Opening your mouth to speak, you quickly opted to remain silent as Crocodile quirked an eyebrow. His lips upturned just the slightest at your impetuosity, it seemed he really has been doing an awful job at training you.
"Since you seem so adept in using that mouth of yours, why don't you put it to better use?" Crocodile motioned toward the obvious tent in his pants, leaving you no room to overthink what his request might be about. He stared down at you, watching and waiting as you remained still.
Placing his elbow on the arm of his chair, he used the back of his hand to rest his head. His golden eyes were no longer filled with adoration, nor with warmth; instead, they were filled with that familiar coldness. "Did I not make myself clear enough, Pet?" he growled, yanking at your leash.
You were pulled forward, face being brought mere inches away from his groin, you couldn't help but swallow thickly. "Do you want me to use my teeth to remove your pants, Sir?" you asked teasingly.

Slipping the loop handle of your leash onto his hook, he continued to hold it taut while he worked his flesh hand over his belt. Undoing the buckle he was quick to push his pants and briefs past his hips, letting them fall to the ground.

A pained groan managed to leave your throat before it was cut off by Crocodile shoving his cock down your throat, forcing himself deeper, your nose hit his base and your nails dug into his thighs. Gagging, you tried to relax your throat, but Crocodile gave you no such mercy as he continued to face-fuck you, drawing his hips back and thrusting forward.
