Ok, I'm not sure how this idea came into being but here we have Hakuji and Koyuki in the style of the Codex Manesse from the 1300's. Probably just what happens if a history nerd falls in love with anime characters.
Reference etc. below the cut.
This is my reference pic from the Codex Manesse from the passage about Lord Konrad von Altenstetten.
Let's pls not talk too much about what turning a Japanese couple from Edo period into medieval Europeans says about me being eurocentric.
I also started drawing the same drawing with Akaza in his demon form but then I realized I had to change the whole outfit. And I had no idea how to transfer Akaza's clothing into a medieval outfit. Like with Hakuji it was easy, I just had to change the colours, the clothes themselves could stay more or less the same. But Akaza? It's not as if people walked around shirtless back then. And even if we ignore that, an even bigger problem is that trousers weren't really a thing at that time in this place either. Hose, yes. But trousers?
(And an outfit with hose just doesn't work if you walk around topless.)
So long story short, I didn't finish the version with Akaza in his demon form. But it was supposed to look like this. More or less. With a different outfit ofc. Idk what I would have done regarding his kanji.
It's a real shame that these two never met. They were practically written for each other.
Just look at them: Akaza hates poison and weak people and Shinobu is physically weak and compensates by using poison. But on the other hand, she's a woman, so he can't fight her. Someone also pointed out to me once that Shinobu's personality before Kanae's death was actually pretty similar to Hakuji's. And they both lost their families twice and went through a huge character change after the second time. Both lost themselves in their revenge. Plus, they both hate Douma. Their dynamic would have been so interesting!
These two were really written to either be the worst enemies ever or to befriend each other and become besties for life. That's one reason why I love fanfictions like Smoke and Mirrors and The Tide of Fate that give attention on their relationship. And it frustrates me to no end that they don't interact even once in canon. Such wasted potential.
