This scene really gets to me, but the way Carl’s hand shakes in this scene really breaks my heart. Imagine how scared he must have been anticipating the blow from the axe. In this moment he’s not sure if he’ll even live through the ordeal. He’s grown up so much from the Carl who never stayed in the house, to the Carl who is willing to lose a hand if that’s what it takes to keep everyone safe. He even doesn’t hesitate. Carl has suffered so much. He had to kill his mother. He’s been shot twice. He’s lost an eye. Yet he still manages to hold it all together in an extremely devastating situation. Carl doesn’t get enough credit for how far he’s come.
