Caption from Instagram: “Lots of you enjoyed the sounds of the lesser horseshoe #bat in the last reel so here is a clip from inside a lesser horseshoe bat maternity colony. The little grey balls of fluff you can see are baby bats clinging to their mums! The sound is from a bat detector which brings the ultrasonic echolocation calls into our hearing range. The calls are made at 110kHz but humans can only hear up to around 20kHz so the bats appear silent unless you use a bat detector. One of the reasons the calls have that lovely warbling sound is because they are emitted through the noseleaf, which is horseshoe-shaped, hence the name.

We have 18 bat species in the UK and the lesser horseshoe bat is one of our rarest and smallest. All UK bats are insectivorous which makes them nature’s pest controller! In the UK you need a licence to enter bat roosts & this video was filmed under licence.”

My not-as-outdoorsy friend who I was on a hike with today said "you know, I've never actually seen an orchid blooming in the wild before" and then we found an endangered orchid from imo like maybe the most beautiful genus :)
