OLIVER WOLF x JOSH NICHOLS | Brilliant Minds S2E16 “Senses”
The thing is ... here's Oliver Wolf, who kissed a boy once 30 years ago and refers to him as his "ex." (And yes, the "ex" was partly to make Josh jealous, but let's be real, he spent a lot more time thinking about Tom in those 30 years than most people would about one teenage kiss.). And then there's Josh Nichols, whom we learn is gay because his gym class hookup drops him a voice mail. (A hookup who is then never heard of again.) Very different approaches to intimacy. And that's very much not to say that Josh is a player, quite the contrary. He was clearly took dating Oliver seriously and was committed to making it work (... just like he was committed to making it work with his military boyfriend). And even though it doesn't sound terribly serious, he respects his old-new flame enough to not just jump ship when Oliver asks him to try again. But Oliver responds to their breakup by retreating into his head. He obviously still thinks about Josh, but he's avoiding the difficult conversations in person because it would mean digging up the stuff about his dad again, and instead he keeps having the talks he should be having with Josh with Carol instead. He's hung up on Josh, but it's all in his head. Josh doesn't actually know any of this.
And Josh responds to their breakup by going back to having sex. Because he's got stood up by his boyfriend and he got left with an unpleasant job by his superior and he got cursed by a patient's mother and he lost a fucking tooth and maybe it's nice to have someone to hug at the end of the day. It doesn't have to mean everything. But Oliver doesn't know that.
