Climate Change 101: Fundamentals of Climate Change

The recent climate conference in Doha has sparked much interest with the adoption of the second Kyoto protocol. Larger nations may now be taxed for their environmental actions in order to compensate the smaller nations who maintain a more active role in their local environmental conservative activities. 

A new video on Vimeo (courtesy: Dark Igloo) is going viral and is looking to explain climate change on a more fundamental level.

Really good climate explainer. Long time followers know I’m skeptical about the solutions Bill Nye discusses at the end of this video. Carbon emissions are simply not decreasing, not even a little. In fact, we’re burning much more than thought possible. And we have to stop fooling ourselves in thinking that it’s going to stop. China and India are getting richer and Africa and the Middle East are experiencing populations booms. They want cars, computers, houses, and gadgets, all of which means higher demand for energy. We need to be honest and clear headed about this reality.

In any case, this is a good video and well worth watching.

One-Dimensional Man (1964) by: Herbert Marcuse

I just began reading this book, and I'm literally only on page 29. I keep jotting down notes and underlining key points, waddling over to my boyfriend to read him paragraphs I found interesting and honestly quite mind blowing. Let me remind you that this book was published in 1964 and it has passages in it taken from even earlier texts, but I'm just reading the philosophy of this Herbert Marcuse fellow, speaking of the dehumanizing nature of capitalism, along technological advancements like machine automation that lead to less labor intensive lifestyles. Let me take a passage from the book that I found very interesting; this quote was actually taken from a set of documents presented at a conference in Washington on April 22, 1958: [Automation in it's largest sense means,  in effect, the end of measurement of work... With automation, you can't measure output of a single man; you now have to measure simply equipment utilization. If that is generalized as a kind of concept... there is no longer, for example, any reason at all the pay a man by the piece or pay him by the hour, and that is to say, there is no more reason to keep up the "dual pay system" of salaries and wages.] Well I'm just realizing this book is hitting a lot of the topics I'm studying right now, and I thought it was quite amazing my friends and I happened upon this book in the free book bin at the library. 2 books left and this was one of them. I'm following his writing really well. I can't say whether I recommend it or not yet, but I guess I just recommend people read anything they are interested in, even if my very short and personal response to the first 29 pages piqued your interest, you should take a look. I personally believe that every person that considers themselves a scientist or science minded should at least be enough of a scientist as to question authority against the rules of nature. Because after all, questioning everything is at the very root of science.
