Happy "Not Only Is It Not Friday, It's Not Even Thursday, Official Wednesday, It's Tuesday" Monday, everyone
I got that temporary sadness in me
I also have inevitable joy lying dormant within me. Also bones are in me
what's that one thing where they asked how ripely from alien was so realistic and believable as a female character in scifi for once and they were like "well we just took the dude from the original script and made him a girl and changed nothing else. it works bc men and women are the same?" and people were like "woah no way" and then didn't learn anything from that for 20 years
"how do you write such believable men as a woman?" "how do you write such believable women a man?" and the answer people who are good at it always give is "i just write people. were literally the exactly the same. do you think the opposite sex is some sorta totally different animal???" and people respond "woah that's wild. yea i do. and im not gonna stop thinking that goodbye :)"
this is a general, casual post about sexism in media not like a deep dive in the subject or a statement on how Alien has no sexism whatsoever or something. you are capable of understanding this post ok i believe in you
Idea for a Generic Medieval Fantasy Setting: The characters refer to their nameday as an apparent stand-in for birthdays, celebrating it annually according to their respective preferences and perhaps family customs, as one does. People talk about things that happened before someone's time as having gone down "before you were named", someone grievously insults an opponent on the battlefield by going "your mother should never have named you." So with the way naming is always talked about, as a reader you start to somewhat assume from context clues that these people have some sort of a taboo about the word "birth" or something, and naming is used as some sort of an euphenism to avoid naming the process in which people come into the world.
Then somewhere halfway through the story it turns out that in this setting, people aren't named immediately after being born. This is a semi-realistic-gritty fantasy setting, after all. Due to the somewhat high infant mortality, to at least somewhat soften the blow of potentially losing a child, babies just aren't named before the parents are pretty confident that the kid is going to survive. The naming ceremony is where a baby is officially aknowledged as an entire individual, a member of the family and a legally existing person, instead of just a gurgling extension of the mother who may or may not disappear from this world. And that timespan between birth and being named is - depending on the situation and the family - somewhere between 1-4 years.
And suddenly the whole bunch of annoyingly-too-mature teenagers and other weird remarks about age start making sense in hindsight. The heroine protagonist who celebrated her 16th nameday at the start of the story is actually 19 years old. The wild difference in maturity between two characters who were both named the same year wasn't just a difference in backgrounds, The Rich Idiot isn't just rosy-cheeked and naive due to being sheltered growing up, but actually literally years younger than a peasant "of the same age". A character who's sickly and was frequently remarked to look much older than their years hasn't just been harrowed by their illness, but was not named before the age of seven because their parents didn't think they'd survive.
Terms every writer should know
Here’s a quick cheat-sheet to some common terms you may run into during your writing career!
Alpha reader: A person that reads the manuscript with the knowledge it is unfinished and provides content feedback & support (like a coach, mentor or friend).
Beta reader: A person that reads the manuscript for the purpose of finding plot holes, sensitivity issues, and provide feedback, pre-publication.
Back matter or End matter: Additional content at the end of a book, such as acknowledgements, author bio, afterword, etc.
Front matter: Content preceeding the beginning of a book, such as publication information, dedication, title page, table of contents etc.
House: A publishing house.
Developmental editing: Editing that helps develop the content of a book, point out logic, inconsistencies, and focus the idea.
Line editing: Editing that helps the consistency and concision of the author’s style, finds redundancies, and fixes grammar.
Copy editing: Editing that focuses on grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary.
Passive voice: In passive voice, the subject is the person or thing being acted upon.
Active voice: In active voice, the person or thing performing the action serves as the subject of the sentence.
Flash fiction: Extremely short stories, usually of up to 1,000 words.
In medias res: Starting the narrative from the middle of the story.
Deus ex machina: Term for a common trope where all issues are resolved by a god-like force, typically when one writes themselves into a corner and cannot resolve the conflict in any other way.
Head hopping: A common error in narrative perspective, where the writer gives access to internal thoughts of two or more characters within a scene.
Dialogue tags: Sentences that frame dialogue to let the reader know who’s speaking.
Story beat: A structural element of narrative that signals a shift in tone, plot, or character. Can be used for chapters, scenes, and outlines.
Pacing: The rate at which a story progresses.
Pinch point: An event in the plot that adds pressure to the characters.
Plot point: A major turning point in a story structure.
Logline: The story summary in one single sentence, much like a premise or an elevator pitch.
Synopsis: A detailed description of a story’s plot, for the purpose of sharing with literary agents.
R&R: Revise & resend: A changed or revised manuscript requested by agents or editors.
Manuscript: The main body of an unpublished book.
Shelf time: The time during which you set aside your project to come back to it with a fresh perspective.
Zero draft or vomit draft: A draft written by the author solely for themselves, used to get the story out on the page without external pressure.
Exposition: Where background explanation about the story, world, or characters is provided.
Subtext: The meaning behind the text, the dialogue, the plot, or the characters.
MC: Main character.
Motif: An image, phrase, or symbol repeated throughout the book for thematic significance.
Theme: The moral statement, argument, or question at the heart of a story.
Trope: A cliched story element, particular to certain genres.
Save the post so you can find them easily 😊
This except that a trope is literally just a recognizable story element. It's a tool. A cliché is when the trope is overused and/or done badly. All stories have tropes i.e. friends to lovers, found family, a wizard did it, spooky small town, etc.
HEY I loved that Lovecraftian customer service story you posted! Made me smile :)
Thank you so much!!
You have some decent texts, but if you want to ever call yourself a 'writer', learn basic grammar such as the difference between 'it's' and 'its', ffs. Reading stuff like 'It opens it’s mouth' hurts.
So, honestly, this just made me roll my eyes more than anything else. It's so pretentious. Grammar is made up. It doesn't matter.
Like, oh no, I missed a typo and pissed off one rando who decided to be an asshole instead of being helpful and saying, oh hey you missed something here.
I wrote that piece in half an hour, speed edited it, and then posted it. I guess I'm sorry an apostrophe ruined your reader experience or whatever, but honestly you'd enjoy life much better if you unclenched a little.
Hey that Lovecraftian customer service rep was sick! Loved it.
Thank you! I really appreciate this! I was really nervous because it's so different than what I usually write, so I'm glad you like it.
A terrifying lovecraftian monster that speaks in a customer service voice
For just a moment, and only the briefest of moments, you think you are dreaming it. After all, you’ve been studying for finals for nearly a week of sleepless nights, running mostly on caffeine and desperation in equal amounts, and just the barest amount of ramen and fast food.
But then the cold dread begins to sink into your skin, deep, deep until you can feel it in your very bones. Every hair on your body is standing on end, and you feel as if you are gasping in a chilly winter wind that smells gaggingly of the sea--of rotted fish, and animal excrement, and so much salt you can taste it.
So I might write this at some point, but I had a weird dream last night and I wanted to share it.
It was a coldflash dream with soulmates, so obviously Barry and Len are soulmates. And when you find out who your soulmate is, if you don’t complete the bond/reject the bond, you start getting weak/sick. Well, Len finds out Barry is his soulmate, but Barry doesn’t find out in return.
So Len gets sick and refuses to tell Barry, because Len thinks Barry wouldn’t want him anyways. Finally, Mick decides to do something about it, and contacts the group at the labs.
Meanwhile, the person I was in the dream was...weird. It was Barry from an alternate dimension, and a woman (her name was Barnette). Except she died while still a baby, and the person was actually a demon that had gone into the body shortly after the baby died (didn’t kill the baby), and when the baby was brought back it was just the demon. And the demon was there because it was open season on demons in that universe and he didn’t want to die. Also the demon is a man and so the body is FTM.
So to recap, the person is Barry from another universe who was a lady, but is actually really a demon inside the body of Barry in another universe who is a man and has begun transitioning since they’re technically trans. Also, nobody knows the demon part, just the Barry from an alternate reality who is FTM part.
So anyways, Mick contacts the gang to let them know what’s happening to Len. And for some reason in the dream Barry couldn’t go to Len, Len had to come to Barry. Except Len couldn’t be moved because he was so sick he might die.
The solution to this. The demon revealed himself as a demon, then summoned Len to them with a demonic summoning circle (that looked weirdly like a chicken carrying a basket of vegetables on its head). Summoned Len, then the demon passed out.
Then I woke up. But anyways, I’m thinking of writing this some time, but I also don’t know if anything I’ve stated above actually counts as crack or not given what’s happened in the show so far.
Date One: Stisaac
Chris Argent opens the door to the Stilinski home and gives Isaac Lahey a friendly smile. “Come on in. Stiles is just getting his backpack.” He steps back and allows the werewolf entrance to the home. The lanky were walks past the front room and into the kitchen where he plops his own backpack into an open chair and begins digging into it.
He pulls out each item individually: a notebook, a textbook, a highlighter, a pencil, and then a plastic shopping bag with a gas station logo emblazoned on the side. Just as he’s untying the hasty knot, Stiles noisily stomps down the stairs and enters the kitchen.
Stiles paced in the open space in his front room between the TV and the couch. He reached the wall, turned and quickly walked to the other wall, his socks almost noiseless on the carpeted floor.
“Stiles,” Chris Argent said as a sigh, “everything is going to be fine. Alan and I already made sure there's nothing supernatural going on besides the usual. Everyone really does just wants a chance to court you.”
You've All Decided Whatnow?
Stiles was running a little bit late to the pack meeting, he knew that. But he'd gotten distracted after school by reading some weird tome Deaton had lent him to help with his spark or something and had forgotten to set an alarm.
Whatever though. It wasn't like he was going to be an hour late or anything. Just fifteen minutes. And he'd even sent a text to Derek when he realized he was late at all so the cavalry wouldn't break into his house uninvited just in case he'd been kidnapped.
He pulled into his usual spot between Melissa's car and Jackson's Porsche and bound up the steps of the rebuild step two at a time.
Boyd is studying at the dining table in Derek's loft when the hand appears in his view with a Reese's Cup and slides it across his notes. Even without looking up, the long fingers and the moles dotting the skin give away who the appendage belongs to. He looks up anyway, and catches Stiles' shy smile.
“You've been studying a while. Thought maybe you'd want a snack?” He sounds uncertain, and Boyd can hear his faster than normal heartbeat in his ears.
“Uh, thanks,” Boyd says and picks up the single cup. Even more than just the action itself, Boyd is surprised by what he's been offered. Stiles is more protective of his Reese's Cups than some parents are of their children. He never shares, not even with Scott.
But Boyd rationalizes it quickly. The loft is nearly completely out of food, the only things left being boxed foods that need five other things to make, four of which they don't have. There's nothing here that's really snack food material. Stiles is just being nice, and it's a coincidence that Boyd also happens to really like Reese's Cups. Boyd savors the treat anyways, and goes back to his studying just a little lighter than before.
Boyd made sure to stock the freezer with Reese's Cups after the next shopping trip. After all, according to Stiles, that was the best way to eat them. The answering squeal the next time Stiles opened the freezer was well worth the gentle ribbing Erica and Issac had given him for the effort.
Clint walks in the door slowly, dragging his feet over the threshold, Lucky excitedly whining and trying to get as close to him as possible.
"Hey, boy," he croaks. He drops his bow and quiver into the closet in the entryway as he kicks the front door closed. He leans against the wall and slowly unlaces and gingerly pulls off his boots.
They couldn't be allowed to fight. Clint had to think of a way to stop it. He thought about it long and hard the entire time as he packed his gear, as he traveled to the Avengers Compound, as he and Wanda and Scott drove to the airport to meet up with Steve and Sam and Bucky Barnes, once upon a time the Winter Soldier.
He tried not to think about that last one. About the times they had met up during Clint's years of freelance work, before SHIELD had scooped him up and offered him a life off the street, with people watching his back. They'd shared a few targets during those years. And while each of them had been thoroughly unimpressed to lose the kill to someone else, the target was still dead and the people in charge of them were still happy. Clint still got paid whether he pulled the trigger or not.
But two years before SHIELD, he'd finally tracked down the other sniper and made his introductions. Well, he'd tried. He'd opened the door to the rooftop where the man was stationed and almost taken a knife to the throat for his trouble.
They'd fought for a few minutes before the Soldier had pinned him to the ground and held a knife to his throat. Clint had had to talk the guy down, and it had been hard. He doesn't remember what he said, just knows that he'd babbled whatever had come to mind. Probably something about fellow snipers and sharing targets and a bunch of other stuff. But it had worked, sort of, and the Soldier had let him go with a warning.
Clint had fled, but still gotten paid for the kill even though he'd already been three towns away when the man had died.
Two months later, the Soldier made himself known while Clint had been getting ready to pull the trigger. He was still proud of himself for making that shot with the way his heart had been pounding desperately in his throat.
Slowly during those months, they'd gotten to know each other. The Soldier called him Hawk in Russian. He returned the favor by calling him Winter, also in Russian.
Sometimes, the Soldier seemed more distant. Sometimes he didn't even acknowledge Clint when they had the same target, even after the person was already dead. And sometimes he all but clung to Clint. He stuck close but never actually touched him. They never talked much. And after whatever target was down, they would escape to some other rooftop and sit closely in silence. The Soldier had been the only real human contact Clint had had during that time, besides the very rare run ins with Natasha.
The last time Clint saw the Soldier he'd been agitated, jumping at the smallest of noises, more tense than usual, but sticking even closer to Clint, if that was possible. After the kill was taken, he touched Clint for the first time. Just his hand on Clint's bicep.
But then he was using that hand to reel Clint in. He placed his other hand on Clint's face and Clint had waited, holding his breath. He'd been attracted to the man for quite some time, since those first few months, but he'd never imagined being this close to the man in real life.
The Soldier had searched his eyes for a moment before leaning in a placing a gentle kiss on his lips. Clint had sunk into it, disbelief warring with the feeling of chapped lips on his own. Then he left without a word and three months later SHIELD recruited him.
From then until the present, there were very rare rumors of the Winter Soldier and his appearances. And then Loki happened and he couldn't care. And then SHIELD fell and the Winter Soldier disappeared again and Natasha called him after it was all over. She knew, at least, about the feelings he had for the man.
Memory loss. The words had hurt more than he cared to admit. If Hydra had been wiping his memory, that explained why the man sometimes didn't recognize him. But if he interactions with him were representative of how effective the memory wipes were, maybe now Bucky could start getting his memory back.
But if the Winter Soldier was AWOL and possibly becoming Steve Rogers' old friend again, how much of his time as the Winter Soldier would he remember? But it had been so long; would he remember Clint at all? Or would Hydra have finally succeeded in removing him from the Soldier's memory after so many years?
-
When they reached the airport, Clint let the introductions flow, even if it was a stilted and awkward flow. He tried not to let his eyes wander to Bucky, but it was difficult. The man looked even more haggard and homeless than he ever had before and Clint just wanted to take him to his farm and take care of him there. But they didn't have time for that. He also squashed the hope that tried to bloom in his chest when Bucky kept looking at him while the introductions were happening.
As they were getting into their gear, Clint positioned himself close to Steve.
"So Tony really wouldn't help when you told him about the whole Super Soldiers thing?" He asked, adjusting the wrist guard on his arm and checking the tightness. He was met with silence. "You did tell him, didn’t' you?"
"There's nothing he could have done anyway," Steve said defensively. Clint blinked at him, before fishing for his phone impatiently.
"You would know one way or the other if you had bothered to tell him. Or Natasha. I'm betting you didn't tell her either."
"Clint, don't." Steve reached for him as he dialed but he took several steps away from him, "If you call, they'll just be able to track your phone."
Clint scoffed. "If you don't think they already know exactly where we are, you're deluding yourself." He put the phone to his ear and waiting for Steve to continue to try and get his phone from him. He had no doubt Wanda would be on his side. She had already finished changing in the van and was giving Steve a thoroughly unimpressed look.
"Clint," Natasha answered.
"Hey, I have news."
"If you're calling to tell me where Cap and the others are, we already know. We're on route to intercept."
"Actually, this is about something else entirely." He quickly told Natasha what Steve had told him.
"Are you serious?" She sounded utterly disgusted.
"Very."
"They're both idiots."
"Very," Clint agreed.
"I'll tell Tony and let you know if he calls off the manhunt."
"Awesome. Also, you should see if he can't swing amnesty for the information. Maybe something like Tony and Steve had a plan to search for information since they wanted to be sure about the perpetrator of the bombings."
"On it. Try to keep everyone out of trouble until I contact you."
"I just love babysitting duty." She snorted and hung up.
He looked up and saw everyone with eyes on him. "Nat's going to talk to Tony, see if we can get them on our side."
"And if she can't?" Steve asked. He was clearing displeased with Clint.
"Natasha is on our side at least. She'll help us."
"So what are we supposed to do until then, just sit around?" Sam asked from where he was leaning against the Beetle.
"Well, Nat said they were on route to our location. Obviously the approach to the helicopter isn't going to work. We'll have to see if there isn't something else we can use."
"They will probably be coming in a quinjet," Wanda added, "perhaps we could watch for them and take it once they are clear?" Steve nodded at her.
"Sounds good."
"Some of us might have to set up a diversion to get them away from it. Probably most of us. We should only plan on Steve and Bucky making it to the jet, maybe Wanda too since she'll be better off with you than wherever they'll stick us when they catch us." Clint said.
"They aren't going to catch any of us," Steve said in a hard voice.
"That's a nice dream, Steve, but hawk guy is right. There's like five of them, and three or four of us will be creating the diversion. Plus at least two of them can fly." Scott said.
"Three." Sam added.
"Yeah, three."
"Yastreb?" All eyes snapped to Bucky, who had otherwise said nothing the entire time. His wide eyes were fixed on Clint. As soon as they made eye contact, he was stalking forward.
"Bucky?" Steve said, trying to intercept him, but Bucky brushed past him.
Clint stood stock still, not sure if he dared to hope, or if it was just a flicker of memory that would soon leave him. But then Bucky wrapped his arms around him and pulled him into a gentle kiss and Clint was melting into all of it with desperation. Before they could fully sink into it, Steve was clearing his throat. They pulled apart a little, but remained wrapped in each other's arms.
"Bucky?" Steve asked again. Bucky looked between Steve and Clint a few times before settling on Steve.
"He's important. He was... a good thing from before. From when... when they had me. And then he disappeared at some point."
He turned to Clint.
"Where did you go? Why didn't you say anything when you got here?"
"SHIELD. They recruited me. My missions never overlapped with yours anymore and I had no way to contact you. And," he took at deep breath, and traced Bucky's cheek with his fingers, "I thought maybe you'd forgotten about me. Nat told me about the memory wipes. And it's been at least a decade. I had no reason to think they hadn't succeeded in removing me from your head too."
Before Bucky could respond, Clint's phone vibrated in his pocket. He kept one arm around him as he dug for his phone with the other.
"Please have good news," He answered.
"Tony's willing to check it out. Although he's even more pissed at Steve now for not telling him."
"Well it is a bit hypocritical when you take into account his policy on transparency, but it's good to hear he's willing to believe us," he said, meeting Steve's eyes with his own. The man look rightly contrite.
"Are you guys going there now, or are you coming to pick us up?"
"Probably best if we take different rides. There isn't much room and T'Challa might not be overly willing to believe us if Bucky's within his sights."
"Point. Anything on amnesty?"
"Lots, if we can prove Steve and Bucky are telling the truth."
"Awesome. We'll meet you there."
"Be safe, Little Hawk."
Clint rolled his eyes, "You too, Killer Queen." The line went dead.
"Well?" Steve asked.
"Looks like we have a helicopter ride in our near future." He slipped from Bucky's arms, but snagged one of the man's hands. They held on tight as they made their way to the helicopter. And even though Clint needed both hands to fly, Bucky sat copilot the whole way.
The kiss reminded him of chemistry lessons in school, when if the right two elements were put together, they'd explode. Back in high school, he never would have imagined the right elements to be him and Boyd. But then, they hadn't even really been friends for much of high school. It had taken time; more life or death situations than any person should face, let alone a bunch of underage kids; and learning when to talk and when to shut up, for both of them.
It had taken obligatory pack nights after Stiles had convinced everyone they would be stronger for them. And study sessions on the weekends to not just catch up but get ahead for those times when a new murderous whatever showed up and took all of their time.
Talking in school hallways. Sitting together at lunch. Making food together as a group. Watching movies together. Playing games together.
Fighting together. Spilling blood, theirs and others'. Rescues. Snark and silence and countless pack cuddle piles after a hard day.
He pulled back from the kiss and let out a long breath. It had been such a simple kiss, barely a brushing of lips, but he'd felt it all the way down to his toes. He opened his eyes and saw the same wonder he felt in those expressive brown eyes.
"Hi," he croaked. Boyd's answering smile was rapturous.
"Hi."
"Can, um... can we do that again?"
He felt Boyd's large hands slide up his back from where they'd come to rest on his hips. One stayed just beneath his shoulder blades while the other crept up to cradle his head. Slight pressure from both hands pulled Stiles from where he was hovering over Boyd to sit on his lap and press their chests together.
Stiles' hands moved from supporting his weight on Boyd's shoulders to lace behind his neck. They watched each other for a moment more before Boyd pulled him forward and they were kissing again. It was still a slow kiss, not teasing just testing and enjoying the tenderness of inevitability.
One kiss morphed into many. And though they ranged from innocent to deep, closed mixed with languid sweeps of tongue, they remained slow and patient. It had taken them years to get here, they were in no hurry to rush this first moment together.
Finally, Stiles pulled back, breathing heavily. He tucked his head into Boyd's neck and melted into the werewolf. The hand on his back began to sweep up and down slowly, lulling Stiles into a calmness he only ever seemed to have when the other was around.
"Hey Boyd?" He felt the werewolf beneath him rumble in question. "Do..." He breathed out heavily through his nose as if that would force some of the sudden anxiety out of his chest, "Do you want to go on a date, maybe?"
"Yeah Stiles, I would like that."
Stiles smiled and tried to snuggle closer, although he was already as close as he could get. Boyd gave him a quick squeeze before continuing to rub his back.
Stiles feel asleep slowly, taking deeps breaths and slowly melting more and more into him as his tension released. Only after his breath finally evened out did Boyd finally drift off, cradling him close even in sleep.
