the school halls are buzzing with the usual chatter and sound as always, bodies weaving in between one another as the influx pushes towards their respective lunch spots.
miles is sitting by the bleachers with the guys, sprawled out with a cigarette between his lips and a permanent grin on his face as he waits for jodie to get her food, entirely oblivious to the gossip working its way around the school.
the lunch line is flooded with stories, all whispered between girls, like the name miles carter holds some sort of urban legend. "sweet." "a player." "the boyfriend of every girl in tulsa." "good at more than just sweet talking." "means well but executes it poorly."
@thekidsnextdoorintulsa
Jodie kept moving alone the line, head forward although she kept an ear open as she heard Miles name mentioned a few times .. then other words she definetly did not, want to hear along with the name she thought she cared about.
she has finished up her main lunch and walked across the field to the bleachers were she saw Miles. She carried her purse on her shoulder and an apple in her hand while stopping, not walking up the bleachers where he sat in the middle with other greasers.
“can we talk alone?” She called to him.
the boys surrounding him give a teasing 'ooh', nudging him playfully and raising their eyebrows crudely. miles slaps one of them upside the head, though his grin doesnt fade as he stands.
"sure, baby." he jumps down the final few steps. "whats goin' on?"
she didn’t say much yet, taking his hand and walked a few strides out of ear shot. She shifted on her spot while looking across his face. “I’m the only one, yeah?..” she asked hoping he would say yes.
“cause I was in the line getting my food, and uh..” she paused “people were whispering” after a second she corrected “girls. Girls were whispering things about you being with other .. girls?” She stated, her face scrunched into a hurt and confused expression.
his brow furrows, genuine confusion flickering across his features. "yeah. you're the only one. where'd you hear that?"
he shakes his head. "listen, i know i've been with lots of girls in the past, alright? but trust me, i've never cheated. ever. and i sure as hell ain't gonna start with you." and he's being genuine.
Jodie nodded quickly. “Alright, yeah no I trust you” she said as a small smile returned back to her face. She did believe him she truly did .. that may have been foolish of her but he could have also meant it whole heartedly.
“just some stupid popular girls talking .. or something aint, matter now” she shook her head as she glanced back at the school buildings, running a hand through her hair. She turned back to him “what lesson do you got next?” Jodie asked trying to get the whole situation off her mind.
he shrugs, slinging an arm around her shoulders. "got english. was gonna skip though."
he starts walking her towards the doors. "didnt do the homework and im too close to being offered tutoring with that Alderidge girl to afford getting caught." Miles looks down at her. "You know her?"
”I’ve seen her around” she glanced at him then forward again as they walked through the halls, it wasn’t every day you saw a greaser have his arm around some Soc. She was still getting used to people staring. “ I can help you” she stated like it was stupid he didn’t already ask her.
“Come to my place after school and I’ll help you with whatever your doin’ in English or whatever subject.” she smiled up at him as they stopped at her class, parting ways seeing Jodie had History now.
“Yeah, alright.” But he sounds distracted, kissing her cheek before walking off towards the back exit, no doubt to sneak off to the pool hall for an hour
By the time he comes back, hes had a beer, a few smokes and his pockets are filled with cash fr hustled games.
Hes waiting outside of Jodies class when he sees Nancy walk by. His gaze follows.
a few minutes later she walked out, books under her arm. “Hey” she smiled while linking her free arm with his as they walked to her locker, now being the end of the day.
she hasn’t noticed him watching Nancy earlier and was oblivious to any facts. “So?.. am I tutoring you or you just gonna wing it like every other time?” She hummed while grabbing her few things from her locker she needed.
“Uh…” he looks back down at her, trying to shake away the distraction. “I dunno. Might wing it.”
His smile returns as he leans in. “Thought I wouldnt mind a tutoring session from you. Wouldnt get much work done…” he reaches up to the top shelf of her locker and grabs a book, handing it to her.
Jodie smiled at the mention of them getting distracted while she shook her head. “So smooth” she laughed slightly as she took the book.
*time skip at Jodie’s house*
“ur lucky my parents arnt home or you wouldn’t be here” she muttered while looking through her book. “Did u write down that line I told you to?” She glanced at Miles, and the unfinished supposed studying in-front of him.
He hums, twirling the pen between his fingers. His chin is propped on his hand as he watches her.
“Yeah…” though he definitely hasnt. “Sweetheart, id almost think your parents hate me.” He teases

Jodie was leaving her house to go shopping for the day to get some winter clothes. She stumbled out the front gate of her house and walked down the street towards the line of shops a couple blocks from her house.
she had been shopping for a little while and walking with her bags back home on the fine line brtween the soc and greaser side of town. A few greasers hooting and hollering at her she saw a group and notices miles standing there but decided to ignore the boys ahead of her.
( mb it’s a long starter, low-key like doing lots of writing )
miles whistles at her, calling out. “Hey, rich girl.”
His friends laughs and holler again, shoving him around as he grins. “Goin’ somewhere?”
Jodie sighed slightly before glancing back at the group, and maybe holding her shopping bangs tighter in case they stole something... their greasers after all.
"to my friends house" she shot back, even though that was a lie she was going to go to the park and read.
The other boys chuckle behind him and miles shoots them a look, though his own smile doesnt drop.
“You need someone to walk ya? Keep ya safe from these bums?” He nods behind him at the boys.
"im fine on my own!" jodie huffed and continued to walk, struggling slightly with the few bags she was holding. she kept making her way down the street, glancing back once. she sighed when she saw miles catching up.
"i said im fine" she muttered as he was walking by her side again just like yesterday.
“We both know thats a lie.” He takes one of the bags from her easily, slinging it over his shoulder
“I was almost starting to think you’d forgotten me.”
”trust me I couldn't forget you” jodie basically scoffed as she rounded the corner walking up to the park not far from her house, heading to a tree to sit and grab her book from one of the 3 bags.
she sat down and opened the book, glancing up at Miles “are you going to sit?..”
"so you're sayin' you've been thinking about me?" He grins.
it drops as he watches her take a book from her bag. he glances around briefly before slowly sitting down beside her, legs stretched out, smoke curling from the cigarette between his lips.
"dont expect me to pick up a book."
”you make an impression” she smiled slightly before tucking her hair behind her ears and continued reading her book. “I wasn’t dreaming of it” she huffed knowing he wouldn’t read.
She glanced at him then at his cigarette, taking it from his lips and having a drag herself before giving it back with a smug smile. “Thanks”
he looks slightly taken aback as she takes the cigarette before breaking into a grin.
"bold, huh?"
”what, no” she laughed slightly as she continued reading her book again. “I had my last smoke yesterday and haven’t got any yet” she shrugged
They were silent for a second again. “I dunno anything about you ya know?.. only ur a greaser and u date 5000 girls”
“Im popular.” He shrugs.
“You must have at least heard something else about me.” He says it like he has a shining reputation… all he has is his dating history, a criminal record and the fact he works at his step dads garage. Big deal.
"well your a greaser so i guess you have a rep?.." she shrugged and closed her book. "I don't get why you wanna talk with me, the 'weird rich girl' other than you think im pretty" she questioned in a serious tone.
miles laughs, though it isnt mocking or teasing.
"you're alright to look at." he confessess, and this time there's something genuine in his tone. that soft honestly paired with that smile that catches most girls off guard. genuine at the time and short-lasting.
jodie smiled instantly although she tried to hide it, her cheeks blushed. "thank you" she muttered.
"your not so bad to look at either" she replied as she fixed her hair out of habit. "i don't suppose were dating or anything..? i mean my parents would go crazy" she huffed at the thought of her parents faces.
he grins. "i could take ya to that little diner downtown."
he feigns offence. "I clean up pretty well when my ma's involved."
Jodie rubbed a hand down her face. “Hm.. pick me up at 6:30” she nodded while standing up and grabbing her bags. “Don’t stand me up.. and ignore comments my parents make” she winced slightly at the thought.
“See u later!” She called heading down the road home.
*time skip or smth*
miles arrives a few minutes late, enough to keep her wondering and waiting.
he pulls up outside in his truck as opposed to his bike, leaning out of the window and holding on the horn, purely to piss off her parents.
Jodie came rushing out the door a second later, you could her her parents lecturing voices behind her as she ran down the front steps and out the front gate to his car, hoping in the opposite side.
“hey” she sighed catching her breath while putting her seat belt on. Her dad started waking out the house “you should probabily start driving..”
miles grins at her as she climbs in, turning back to see her dad storming over
"i thought it was polite to meet the parents." he waves lazily. "evenin' sir."
”alright listen here you greaser, I don’t want you with my daughter! After tonight this is the last time you’re gonna see her!” Jodie’s father yelled as he stood outside the car.
she slowly slid down in the seat covering her face with her hands and she groaned. “Dad leave him alone!” She muttered shaking her head.
miles looks entirely unphased, his grin unwavering as he revvs the engine
“Dont worry, man. I’ll take care of her. And i’ll get her back on time.” He winks before speeding off down the street with a laugh
”oh my god he’s gonna kill me” she pannicked and looked back watching her father disappear as they drove off. “This better be worth it” she pointed at miles.
miles smiles, tossing his pack of cigarettes into her lap.
“Trust me.”
she slouched back in the seat, taking a cigarette from the pack and lit it before she took a drag. “So?.. just going to the diner? Or you planning something else?” Jodie asked while looking at miles, watching him drive.
he glances at her, keeping his focus mainly on the road. He reaches over and takes the cigarette, taking a drag
“Depends what you wanna do. I aint fussy.”
”hm… I dunno what do you do for fun? What do greasers do?” Jodie shrugged woth raised brows as he took her cigarette like she did to him the day before.
“but nothing to illegal”
miles rolls his eyes. “Sweetheart, most things we do are illegal.”
he hums. “Steal. Fight. Smoke. Drink. Hustle. Or the diner. Choice is yours.”
”my choice .. aint I just spoilt with those choices” she said sarcastically while looking out her window. “I would say dinner .. but I heard people talking about drag races? They good ..?”
He suddenly breaks into a grin. “Yeah theyre good. Me and the guys usually race but i dropped for you tonight.”
He takes the turn off towards where they race
"such a gentleman" Jodie joked while clicking through the radio in the car until a Bob Dylan started to play and she hummed the tune.
"your friends are gonna be there?" she asked skeptically, knowing most greasers would go crazy.
“Theyre greasers, honey. They live there.”
He pulls up alongside a load of other cars, parking and honking at a group of boys walking by
”I know that” she muttered. jodie fixed her hair slightly in the rear view mirror as miles pulled up next to his friends and put the window down.
“Hey.” He barks at them. “You got us a good spot to watch? Unless you still need a guy to race”
He grins. “Got her with me.” No name. No title. Just ‘her’… ever the gentleman
Jodie gave a small wave as she was mentioned .. though no name but she didn’t really mind. She waited as the group talked with miles a bit.
she fixed her lipstick in the mirror and fluffed her hair.
He gets out the car, slamming the door and hitting the side
“Cmon, sweetheart. You wanna watch or not?”
”I’m comin’” she quickly said while hopping out her side of the car and walked around joining Miles at his side.
you could already hear the car engines revving, greasers stopping and staring at the couple. “Sure as hell no other Soc’s here..” she muttered.
“Nah. Yall are too prissy for this.” He walks to the edge, shoving a few smaller kids out of the way, flashing that charming smile to everyone.
“This is real shit.”
Jodie followed him through the crowd pushing past people before they got to the front of the group. You could hear the cars but it was hard to see them. “Where are the cars I can’t see em?”
“You gotta be patient.” He mumbles, slinging an arm around her shoulders
Shamelessly, his gaze trails after a group of girls passing by and he gives them a lazy grin.
She leaned into his side srill trying to look around to see the actual cars. She glanced at the girls walking past and saw how Miles looks at them but ignored it .. surely it was nothings. Soon there were voices yelling saying the race was gonna start.
“the startin!?” She smiled
He nods, pulling her into his side.
“Yeah. Gonna be loud as hell once they do. You sure you’re cut out for this?”
”I ain’t a wuss” she retorted while taking his hand and walking further down a line of people to see the cars better “Awh jeez they look tuff” she smiled as they had a proper view now.
“you really watch this shit all the time?”
“Its culture to us.” He mumbles, invested in the race. “Aint got much else to do. Besides i work with engines, baby.”
The girls walk by again, waving at him this time and he nods to them.
”who’s that” she asked gingerly as she glanced at the girls then back to the race again. The engines started to rev before someone screamed and the cars tore down the road.
“Just someone i know.” He dismisses. “Don’t worry or I might still think you’re getting jealous”
He grins pay attention quickly goes back to the cars as they go past once more
”I’m definitely not jealous” she scoffed slightly and drew her attention back to the cars, this being the first time she had seen a race like this.
“you ever seen a big crash?” She asked, changing the topic.
“Oh yeah.” He nods. “Been in one too.”
And, as though its the most casual thing in the world, he lifts the edge of his shirt to show a long scar across his side and abdomen. “Last year.”
her eyes widened, one hand grazing the scar before she looked up at him “that’s gnarly!” She laughed amused .. not the first reaction you would think some soc girl would have. “Was it scary?!” She questioned with an amused look plastered on her face. “Aint hurt to bad..?”
He raises a brow at her, a faint proud smile crossing his features
“Nah. I made it out. Dont remember much. Car hit the wall, knocked me out clean. My ma was more worried than me.” He drops his shirt. “Just put me out of action for a week.”
”oh just got a week?” She said in a mocking tone “ur luck it wasn’t for life!” She huffed with a small smile as they turned back to the race.
“Just to clarify the scar is tuff.. super cool” she smiled.
he scoffs, shaking his head and turning back to the race.
"ain't ever heard a girl rich as you talk like a greaser. 'tuff'?" he mocks
”aint u seen why I was always walkin’ alone when you saw me? Those other rich kids don’t like me” she retorted .. “if u don’t like it then.. I dunno what to say” she snapped slighrlt.
“Woah woah hey, lady, i never said i didn’t like it!” Hr holds his hands up in mock defence. “Just curious.”
”well u made it sound like u didn’t like it” Jodie turned to face the cars again, seeing the race has finished now. She got distracted for a moment before turning around back to face miles, he was talking with those girls that kept walking past.
she scrunched her brows while standing at his side arms crossed.
He’s invested in the conversation, flirting until they giggle, letting them put their hands on his arm and chest, not excusing himself or pushing them away
He glances over briefly, raising a teasing brow. “Oh whats that look for, huh?”
Jodie didn’t respond, she turned on her heals and stated walking through the crowd. She wasn’t going to waste her time with someone like him and she realised that now.
she shoved past greasers as they snapped at her until she made it out the crowd and to an empty street, steel walking at a fast pace.
It doesnt take long for miles to notice and before long hes jogging after her
“Hey. Hey…” he grabs her arm to stop her.
she pulled her arm back, “I don’t think you understand the idea of a date?” She argued. “Or maybe you just don’t understand how to treat someone right. Which one?”
Jodie turned now facing him, not very happy.
He looks startled for a second before his expression softens into something easy again
“Oh come on. Dont do that. Those girls were just… people i know. They dont mean anything, honey.” He wraps his arm around her shoulder.
Jodie was quiet gor a second, maybe she was over reacting. Jumping to conclusions. She calmed down after a second “alright” she nodded.
“You mind just takin’ me home?..” she muttered.
He grins and nods to the car, stepping back, that naive puppy love look returning. Like a dog who is given to many bones and goes to whichever looks best in the moment. Unintentional, innocent.
“Get in.”
she smiled slightly, fooled by his act again. maybe he was going to be proper this time jodie thought. they sat in a simple quiet silence during the drive home. she glanced over a few times with a faint smile.
"i was just over thinking it, right?"
“Overthinking what?” He glances over.
“Those girls? They were just friends, honest.” And maybe he means it now. He always does…. Until the excitement wears off and someone else shows him more love.
”yeah no I know” Jodie shook her head as well as nodding. “I overthink a lot, it was nothin’ it’s fine” she said almost reassuring herself. She looked down at her hands fiddling with the many silver rings she had on and few bracelets, a habit shes had since she was little.
slowly the car turned into her street.
miles pulls up outside of her house, cleaning his throat awkwardly
"well... this is it. ive had fun." he glances at her. "you wanna do this again sometime?"
”yeah loads of fun” she rolled her eyes slightly he lay referring to the incident at the drag race. “I wouldn’t mind if we did it again” she added after a second. “Do I get a goodnight kiss? Or u don’t kiss on first dates” she jokes easily.
"you think im easy?" he asks, but the grin on his face says otherwise. he leans across the centre console, kissing her as though it takes no courage, before pulling back.
she had a hand on the side of his jaw when they kissed, pulling away as he did. “Ya seem easy to me” she grinned “I’m kidding.. you ain’t a bad kisser though” she shrugged and hopped out the car. She leaned on his side of the car window.
“call me?..”
“Had plenty of practise.” He teases, though its clear be doesnt intend for it to be malicious. He raises a hand, his smile softening.
“As long as you answer.”

Until the excitement wears off and someone else shows him more love.

miles smiles, tossing his pack of cigarettes into her lap.
“Trust me.”
she slouched back in the seat, taking a cigarette from the pack and lit it before she took a drag. “So?.. just going to the diner?
